Haha.. so I guess the answer is pretty much "no" =)
I don't have a monthly account for them to take money out of or anything so I'm not trying to cheat them. I just thought I could use it once and take the info off. Guess not. Sneaky of them, eh? |

If this is a issue it should have never been entered.
I would suggest you contact billing at this webpage http://secondlife.com/contact.php?q=billing |

Well, it isn't an issue in that sense, I just hate having my cc info on the internet long term. I've never been to a site that kept it unless you asked it to be stored. That's all. Thanks for the info.

I dont think its sneaky of them at all. Lets face it if something happens to your CC information and charges are put on your card because of it, you hit paydirt with lawsuits. My next advice is to add as many CC you can onto your account in hopes that something happens lol

Ha!
Well, I've had my cc stolen online several times on "secure sites". I'm just unlucky in that sense. I just get reimbersed and waste a ton of my time filling out crap. I just wish they would have given me the choice. I wrote them and I hope they can just take it off. I normally use Paypal but it seems like us paypal people aren't getting to buy Lindens the last couple of days now so... I had to do something! |

Did you have any success?
03-28-2007 17:31
Hi Sarah, Did you have any success with this, because I am in an identical position to you. I used my card once on SL to buy some US$ thinking I could then remove the info if I wanted, but of course I can't. I have written to billing at the webpage suggested below. Fingers Crossed....

I did this:
If you switch payment methods (to paypal or other) your credit card info goes away on the payment method screen. I don't know if LL keeps it on file, my guess is they do. In my case I went from paypal to cc and back to paypal. I appears they do not have my cc info any longer. |

My experience is taht you can't delete the cc info they have, short of getting the entire account deleted (which isn't a simple process either, I've heard). However, I am led to belive you can overwrite it by entering new data, such as from a card that's about to expire.
Or you could cancel that card of course. |

I think they might want to keep credit info around in case they want to track griefers or folks that defraud them, etc.

I plaster my CC number all over websites on the internet... but I also keep careful track of what it is being used for. If anything fishy gets processed, I investigate and call up VISA. From over 10 years of being on the web, never had a problem yet. Maybe I'm lucky.

Ha! Well, I've had my cc stolen online several times on "secure sites". Most likely, your CC info was either entered into 'phishing' sites, or found in other ways, especially if this has happened more than once. Are you sure you know how to avoid phishing? They can be pretty tricky. Of course, simply avoiding using a CC online is a good safeguard, and limiting the number of sites where you do so is another. Never click on a link in email and then enter a password or any other sensitive data. If you think it might be a legit email, go to the site your normal way, from your browser. This avoids most (but not all) phishing. Another trick, if you DO click on a link in email and it asks for a password, enter garbage. If it lets you into the site, it's bogus for sure. If it doesn't, though -- it's no guarantee it's valid, because they might simply have been trying to get your password. |

Buy a throwaway gift card, like Vanilla Visa or similar. They range from $25 to over $100, and when they are maxed the card is no longer valid but the credit card info remains on file at LL harming no one.

This does bring up a small issue, because to my knowledge it's against Visa's terms to store the three digit card security code in any permanent way, and it's needed for performing a new transaction.
Obviously if you have a monthly subscription such as tier, that is all considered one transaction, so you don't have to log in and give your 3 digit code every time your land fees are due - but technically you should have to repeat it every time you buy L$, I think...? |

There's no point in deleting your CC information every time you purchase $L (Please, save us the bandwidth and data-storage resources). Security is not an issue with a corporation as big as LL. The information is obviously encrypted and has many security measures, so that even someone from the inside couldn't gain access to your information, and if they did gain access to your CC information, it wouldn't be in english (would be encrypted).
So, you have nothing to worry about. |

It doesn't matter what safe guards get put up, the bad guys figure out a way around. Luckily at least here in the Staes, your liabilty on Credit card fraud is limited.

The possibility of a cracker cracking the CC database, is just that, a 'possibility' -- just like it is possible for a drunk driver to smash you on the road, but that doesn't stop you from driving -- does it?
![]() My words are only in reference to the bit of post I read above (or on page 1): "My CC info. has been stolen before -- I know, I'm unlucky like that" |

For those who dont know in September, some person(s) obtained access to information that is on SL servers.
Some credit card information was considered compromised. Some accounts were tampered with. In presponse LL invalidaed everyone's password, and many of us had trouble getting our accounts accessed again. Presumably they have added security / fixed holes in their system. Concerns over the security of you payment details is understandable. |

Is there a way to get your cc info off SL? The people to ask are the folks that broke into the database a while back. They were able to get our cc info off SL. ![]() _____________________

BINGO! but thinks.......does llabs care if once the card is maxxed? those throwaway ones? there is no real information onfile name waise right....? Usagi Laws may be different in the US but in Canada you can buy a pre-paid credit card. It works identical to a regular credit card and is basically for electronic purchases. The card only has whatever you loaded onto it for a limit. You may also use it to verify your paypal account and avoid giving LL or anybody else your cc info period. The card must be in your name, and the usual address verifications are done (CSc or security code) This appears to be the safest route. I agree you can't be too careful online. |
