Hi everybody,
I’m sure you know Fabjectory (http://www.fabjectory.com/index.php/secondlife/) and the possibility to 3d print your own avatar figurine. I think the concept is very exciting but the service seems a bit expensive ($99-$200).
How much are all of you ready to buy a 4 inch figurine?
Did one of you already ordered a figurine? What are your comments?
Thanks

Maybe... if the figurine were animated... and could interact with other figurines... and accessible on the internet in some 3D virtual reality platform.

double the size, stick some batteries in it to make it vibrate and it may be worth $99

Let me do the math here: $99 - $200

= L$26,234 - L$52999
= 30 - 62 gallons of gasoline to fuel my SUV
= a dinner and movie and then some.
= that cool graphics card for my PC
= 4 month payment for my ISP
= 1 month payment on my private island

or...

= a 4" figurine of my Second Life avatar

hmm, difficult decision here..but..Oh wait, there's more.

*Value of said figurine sitting on your desk...let's figure it's made of plastic, so..about $0.25
*Figuring out what exactly what"Digitally applied color is "baked in", no paint to chip" means = one headache
*Being able to ridicule OP in a droll sarcastic way = PRICELESS!!!

In answer to your question: Nothing
"Is that your final answer?"
Yes, that is my final answer.

Sounds to me like you have a business interest in Fabwahatseme, and are wondering why your not selling many. Please tell me if i'm getting warm.

Be honest with you $99-$200 +$30 postage, are you 'avin a laugh.

It would be cheaper for me to buy a royal doulton figurine and model my avie on that, and the doulton would retain its value.

Intriguing though the idea may be, the price is far too high as yet to be at all reasonable. Mayhaps, when the price comes down to, at most, 1/10 of the current pricing, I might think about such a frivolous expense. But for now, I'd rather spend that money on a better computer for enjoying SL.

i've seen the machines that make these 3d thingys, they're clever but it's hugely expensive to run something through it so that must be why the expensive cost i think. Nice idea, but costs too much to be practical. I think these machines only pay for themselves if you can do a run of one object (bottle top or whatever).

No thats what the big white metal box in your kitchen is for. If there is more than 1 big white box in your kitchen please consult a trained professional, i do not want to be held resposible for you putting your dishes in your washing machine.

*sighs*

I'm picky about sculptures having known many artists in RL. I could probably hire one of them for the cost of this and it would be in ceramic/bronze, which means value would increase, not decrease, depending on artist.. and it doesn't help that my avatar's appearance is subject to change on a whim.

I'm also not crazy about the material they use.

But still, the concept behind it's not bad.

Come on guys. $99-$200 dollars isn't much for a custom, real world object like this. I remember when it used to cost £25 quid ($50 USD) just to setup a screen if you wanted custom t-shirts made. They only work out cheap if you can mass-produce and sell the bulk for profit.

A lot of preparation goes into the creation of these figures, and in the real world it's illegal to expect to pay people a typical SL hourly rate for their time.

These figurines are cheaper than many mid range mobile phones .. which doesn't seem bad for a one off.

But anyway, with regards the OP's question - no I wouldn't be interested because things like prim hair and minor details that make my avatar unique are simply not possible for them to recreate. If they were, I'd probably have had one of these mini-mes sitting on my desk for the past nine months (about when I discovered this company).

Course, I generally hate the way my avatar looked just three months earlier, so it's quite possible I would no longer be so proud of my mini-me if I had invested in one. :D

I looked at these before, 'cuz I tink it would be kinda neat t'have one -- but I'm not willing to pay that price, and the quality seems way, way too low.

On the one hand the price does not seem that unreasonable for a custom made real life object that we'd all probably kind of like to have.
On the other hand it's probably more money than most of us feel we can afford for something we don't really need.

Bit of a tangent here, but that's not economical at all with these machines. The process is called rapid prototyping, and that tells you what it's for: quickly generating physical prototypes of parts you've designed on the computer. The idea is so that engineers/machinists can draft a part and then quickly test it to see if the design works. If so, then they move forward with developing a fabrication process to mass produce the part cheaply. Rapid prototyping is very much not intended for producing the same object over and over.

I saw these at SLCC. They're very cool and I'd love to have one, but I agree that it's priced too high for most people to ever consider.

I'd spend maybe $49 for an action figure of myself, though.

nah, save your bucks to buy or make your own 3d printer. then you can make as many AV's as you want, tweek it untill it's right, hack the hardware to utilize materials you like, use it to make actually usefull stuff instead of fall apart decorations.

Can I get one of someone else? Maybe several. I could collect them and trade them like Star Wars figures.

Ooooh! I have a mint condition Brenda Connolly with the limited eddition panties. I'll trade you for your Waitress Ann With Animated Pie! I opened my rookie collection Rioko because I wanted to play with the dragon avatar, but I still have Raymond and Sideways in the box. That one will hold its value.

There's a convention coming up. I'm going to go dressed like Malachi. Hopefully, I can pick up a Refrigerated Oryx. That would complete my Ladies of the Forums Collection. I've got a spot for her in my display case between Lindal and Collette.

Seriously, if I get one fo these, can I get a biplane to go with it?

Edit: Better yet, can I get little hooks in their heads? Christmas is coming up and I need something to hang on my tree.

Hmmm... I bet they'd make really nice snap-together doll houses... which would be fun to prim together in-world... which is kinda what "building" is like anyway. But that market probably couldn't support the current costs, I guess.

The company I work for has 2 of the same RP (Rapid Prototype) machines that are used to make those figurines.

The larger machine will print objects that are about 24x21x18 inches

What I can tell you is that cost wise we figure on $25 per vertical inch of printing for raw material cost. So when you factor in the cost of the time as well, I think the prices quoted are quite reasonable.

If you like try going to an industrial RP service and ask them how much they will charge to build your avatar. It will be a lot more than $200. For example building the same thing in SLA, $200 would not even cover the cost of the resin and the laser burn time.

You can take the same RP printed avatar and turn it into a bronze version using a process called "Lost Part". We do it all the time for one off castings of special prototype parts. I kind of doubt that anyone could produce a bronze version for $200 though...
