would you guys know if there is somewhere i can read about why the cornfield is no more?

ps:for those who are too new or managed to duck whenever stuff about this was throwed around, the cornfield was a place that was like a hooror movie cornfield with a static tractor and a black and white tv, people were sent there for some period of time when they did somthig bad but not bad enough to justify temporary bans or other stuff like that, some claim it was just amyth, but I remember reading about it somewhere and they had a screenie and reports of people who came back fromt he cornfield and I've talked with a few people in the past that have also said to me it was real, including a linden on live help that told me that I couldn't even visit the cornfield as a tourist cause it wasn't there anymore

A sim can only hold so much residents; these days the cornfield would be hoplessly overcrowded. LL simply bans people now.

Nice idea for the cornfield. Kind of reminds me of The Matrix Online game, if you did something bad you were taken by a GM to the white corridors and then into a white rooom and sat at a table with the GM sat across from you. They eventually did away with it as everyone wanted to go there and just implented it as another game area.

I always wondered- Who the F**K is Mr. Lee, and who's dumb enough to think they're "gonna get rich quick"???

Mr. Lee, if you read this: No one with half a brain is dumb enough to believe your sign. :p

As I understand it, the cornfield was reserved for white collar crimes. Simply being a d*** isn't sufficient.

Apparently, I have a far more vivid imagination than you. I'm not sure if that is good or bad though.

Here's the Cornfield story, with screenshots:

http://www.secretlair.com/index.php?/clickableculture/entry/hidden_virtual_world_prison_revealed/

And the thread that ensued after the story was published:

/108/9a/80836/1.html

But as mentioned above, there's no cornfield anymore- too many offenders, and no point in wasting resources on them.

The episode was "It's a Good Life", and it starred Bill Mumy as the little boy (though his credits read Billy Mumy back then). He's better known for having gone on to play Will Robinson in Lost in Space, and Lennier in Babylon 5.

There was a sequel to that Twilight Zone episode, made in 2003, in which he played the same character, now grown up.

Actually, it comes from the Twilight Zone. One of the older episodes with the kid who "thought" people out of existance into the "cornfield".

Possibly not, it doesn't seem to have been released in Australia, I'll have to buy it online from the UK :/

lol! I remember being afraid of getting this punishment as a semi newb. I wish LL was still that creative and "cared" enough to go to this much effort even for troublemakers.

Or at least cared enough to keep it a tourist trap, because I'd still love to visit it. After reading the article, I can see another reason why Lindens were sending people to the cornfield rather than banning them. People stuck in there will TRY everything to get out and thus, if they succeed, LL has a loophole they need to close.

You've only missed one of the major literary inspirations for Second Life.

It was a pretty good book, 'til the last 100 pages or so.

Last I saw, there was a public version of the cornfield in the Longfellow region. Not sure if it's still there, and it did not look as nice as the "real" one (judging from piccies). I'd love to see the real one -- as long as I could leave right after.
