To the OP:

On the moment people stop complaining, it will be scary.

As long people complain it means they are in some way connected to and busy with SL.

this is true, morwen, and i have to say, i've been guilty of it, but you know, it's nice to hear these stories and realize why we're all here, why SL has made a difference in our lives.

I have never ever been on a forum whereby it wasn't full of drama and complaints.. it takes time to skim past those and find the brighter side of things... those that don't complain, rarely visit forums anyways.... ermm.... well except me of course :p

True, whining, ranting and complaining are parts of any forum. But the ppl that actually contribute something are easily detected.

I will have been in SL 3 years next month so I do remember the so called good old days (how "good" they were is open for debate). But the here and now is still pretty fantastic.

There are now about 60 members of my RL family in game all working together, creating, learning, enjoying each others company. We span 2 countries and many thousands of miles. You can't put a price on our time together.

Some memories of worth.

The awe and joy on one family members face when she walked, danced, flew, and snowboarded for the first time in her life. You see she was born with Cerebral Palsy and has never known life out of her chair.

Watching another family member learn to function again and think again following a severe head injury. How? Through learning slowly and painfully how to build in SL. Stretching her mind beyond what any doctor thought would ever be possible for her again.

Personally its been a journey of small steps for me. From my small first land in Europa (yeah that dates me) to being co owner of Dragon Isle. From having to get the creators help to place a prefab to building Venice. I wouldn't tade one of the trial and tribulations along the way.

SL like RL is a journey. What we get out of it is up to us.

First of all, I'm really glad I hadn't put my mascara on yet when I read your post or it would be dripping down my face.

I think regardless of length of time here, (or anywhere else, for that matter) we take things for granted. The bugs and lag and issues tend to overwhelm the keener sense for taking in the little things.

Thanks for reminding an old NYC cynic that life's a beautiful thing just at face value. It's great when your spirit swells again after reading about memories like yours. Makes the sky seem bluer, and SL AND RL more worthwhile

*hugs*

Second life has made a big difference in my life. In the short year that I have been a resident, I have discovered talents I didn't even know I had. I have been able to apply some of my real life experiences to various business ventures. But most importantly, I have met some spectacular people...some which I want to know forever.

From the first time I saw this video: http://secondlife.com/community/video/popup_flv_player.php?m=http://static.secondlife.com/media/flv/20060712-JavierPuff.flv

...I knew this was a place for me.

I don't tell many people irl about SL because I truly believe SL finds you.

Is SL worth it?

It's worth it for me.

People can only hurt me if I choose to let them hurt me. I use my mute button generously, don’t respond to idiot postings in the forums, and follow the rule of the bumble bee and its ability to fly…

Yea thats true, but some forms of hurt can't be so easily muted. If someone goes behind you back and lies about you to everyone, you can't really mute that and think it will go away.

I figure that if you post on these forums you must still think its worth it to some extent. Another reason I think these boards are so negative is that all the happy peeps are enjoying themselves in SL rather than coming on here! hehe :)

An exploration of one of the more beautifully crafted areas, making your first object/item of clothing, meeting a new friend, having a chat with an old one, skydiving (hehe). I'm even getting to brush up on my French which went unused for ages and its all thanks to SL. I've been encouraged to go back to photoshop/GIMP and explore its capabilities once more after abandoning it a while ago because I want to create even better items than my skills allow at the moment. I even have a forum to share my photography in with more gut reactions than the time and consideration offered in more conventional online environments. SL is great, we may moan but its still a diamond in the rough. :)

true true, i do like SL. heck i been here 2 1/2 years lol. I never spent this much time in any other MMO thing or other. Things go wrong that set me off, but it doesn't stop me from playing it. it may have the largest griefer population on the internet, but i stay here anyway for some odd reason... o.o

The BIG thing that keeps me comin back is all the customization, the ability ta "live" fantasies (steps closer ta VR than we were a few years ago, which I can hardly wait for REAL VR)...

Before SL, I had always used the INTERNET, but for "being a character" and the customisation of that representation of me...and his environment...I hadda depend on the pro 3D artists who had already made the game with THIER imagination & they could only include so much on the CD, and they had game release deadlines, not years of indefinite growth like SecondLife....I coudn't MAKE somethin I wanted ta set in the game, my guy couldn't rent "Land"...multiplayer was s**t...

Regardless I bought game after game huntin down the highest level of customization and a sense of a "World" that I could immerse myself in.

Regardless of the bugs & the fact that our avs "live" on what I call "the other BETA Grid"...SL is the closest I can get ta satisfaction for now, so I keep goin back.
