Incidently, I think Lexie Linden may just have indirectly answered-by-omission the question of whether they plan to close the forums now, on the blog comments.
:(

The silence is deafening, isn't it?

I think we will be loosing at least resident answers. They will want things answered there... leaving no social aspect open that I can tell. They haven't wanted us to be social here in a long time. *sighs*

They will proably leave the content creation and classified areas open, but who will be here to use them?

Well - find 3-Ring's posts- she set up a forum for us to play in should this come to pass. (The demise of RA i meant)

Are the questions and answers Googleable? I mean, Bingable? I mean, able to be searched by a web search engine?

I'm getting a few Google hits to there, it looks a little spotty now but hopefully that will improve with age.

That was the absolute FIRST thing I spotted.

It has been a continuing source of sadness to me that LL is uncomfortable enough with their own forums that they have not helped or promoted the volunteeers there. Over the years, volunteers have built incredibly valuable searchable knowledge in the Scripting Tips, Building Tips and Texturing Tips forums. The lucky few who make it to the content forums learn creation skills quickly.

You make a very good point. Volunteers have built up incredible resources of information in various locations. The more people we can point at those treasures the better! A question on the Answers site that would involve a longer more in depth response might be a good candidate to be directed to a more detailed resource. Maybe that would be a wiki, an inworld class schedule or even a video tutorial.
A wiki, an inworld class schedule or 'even a video tutorial'.

Better start backing up those various tips forum posts you found most useful. :(

I've spent thousands of hours in forums.secondlife.com. I've passed from middle age to old during that time. It's going to be kind of weird not having it around.

Also, this static web page stuff is for the dinosaurs, this is the age of the stream, as in friendfeed. To see new questions appear, you have to refresh the screen, right? How twentieth century.

is there any way to download whole threads from these forums outside of the "open each thread individually and cut/paste" method?

I would hope Resident Answers stays. Not for any sort of social aspect. But because this is where I go for REAL answers as opposed to "Official" answers.

That's called "building a community". Can't have that in this modern age. Now it's all about competition and getting your answer voted as the best.

this forum was created in case the SL official forums took the step they are now taking. perhaps dragging pertinent info over to there is something to be considered in the very near future.

I haven't tried it, 3Ring, but I would guess the best option would be 'Show printable version' under Thread Tools at the top there, and then just save the page from that or paste it into your preferred document format. I, for one, have a whole bookmarks folder packed with organised links to various tips in those forums that I've found useful, thought might be useful one day, or just wanted to keep handy. Let's not even mention the posts/forums I've not even gone through or discovered yet.

Community forums can always be rebuilt by residents, I guess, but at the very least I hope LL archives what's currently in those content creation forums so that it's still findable by those that need it. Nobody is going to copy years of resident content creation advice into a Wiki. If that's what the Lindens think will happen then they'd better start typing, sharpish.

no kidding. posts go back to 2004. that would be a ridiculous amount of work!

if they do close this place to new posts, like you - i do hope they will at least have enough sense to keep them archived for the length of SL's existence.

we can only hope.

I tried to figure out how to answer a poll, but couldn't.

I couldn't either. I also can't seem to find a way to look at all unanswered and "Possibly Answered" questions. I seem to have to go to each sub category, is there another way?

Is this thing going to be moderated? I mean, are incorrect answers going to be removed? In the FAQ it talks about the "scoring" system for correct answers, but am I the only one that sees a problem with the logic here?

From: someone
How do I mark the responses as correct or helpful?
The question author will see the options Correct and Helpful under each response. The author can choose up to two responses to mark as "Helpful"; one additional response can be marked as "Correct".

Ummm...if I had to ask the question, am I the best judge of whether or not it was answered correctly?

WTF is that? What do you mean, like "best answer" becomes the official answer or something?

Pretty much, yes:

From: https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/answers/how_to_participate

The question author will see the options Correct and Helpful under each response. The author can choose up to two responses to mark as "Helpful"; one additional response can be marked as "Correct".

How do the names get in the "Top Participant" box?
The "Top Participant" box is filled automatically based on the number of accrued points for each person. For example: you can accrue points through each correct/helpful answer you give. Answers to questions are worth points and marked correct or helpful by the question's author. So, the answer is... participation and the community decides what names are in the "Top Participant" box.

Yeah that is pretty much the bull that I heard from Torley(who used to pretend to be the forum champion). When he mentioned something about the KB about a month and a half ago, I sent a message stating that there is no way a KB can ever replace the multi-page answers from several participants necessary to flesh out the answer to some technical questions in Content Creation. His only response was that the "discussion in the wild" in the forums could be one possible source of information for the KB.

So now instead of repairing and moderating the forums. They created a new sparkly toy that they can moderate, which will slow questions and answers down to a trickle and they will keep it up till they get tired of it then discard it. The same as they did here or with the original wiki which is still light years more useful then the new wiki for scripting.

So what do you get for accruing points? Is it like Green Stamps? Can you pick out a gift?

You get recognized for your various contributions. Just like they did with Strife before they pretty much said "Don't let the door hit you in the ass" when he decided to quit Moderating and was begging for help here.

Better be careful. :p One of the self answered questions threatens the $9.95 fee per alt and the five per household limit again.
