Yep, I saw that, but someone in that thread was saying it would be in the beta grid soon, and 3pointD was saying it was already added. And did anyone notice that cubeoverload seems to change multiple times a day cause now it's a blurry colored image.

heh that image looks like a texture for one of the sculptures above :)

I think its still in alpha although it does look they are hyping it to put it on the beta grid to me

anyhow its as much as we know so far I think until they release another scrap which looks like its being done meticulously and slowly by some lindens

I'm trying to get my head around the 64x64 pixel image, using RGB vals to translate to X,Y,Z ...

"Prims which are close to the camera get a 32x32 grid of vertices, which drops to 16x16 grid as the prim moves away from camera, and so on."

Does the 64x64 pixel image really represent an array of 16x16x16 control points?

Help me understand - I only dabbled as far as the Brensenham line algorithm :-)

Hm thinking...it's good for things like buildings, furnitures and decoration, but for interaction you'll still need several prim.

Real thinking.
If for example you wanted one part of the sculpted prim to change, you would have to change the sculpt texture and would end up animating your prim.
Great for anything that moves like a walking robot, otherwise it's not worth the hard work.

FD, its on the official blog! Go look! Is this the coolest thing evar or what?

On a slightly different topic...

I have to say, I was momentarily surprised at the "this is the end of SL" blog comments that cropped up even with this announcement. But I guess I shouldn't have been. "Only 3D professionals will be able to build in SL now." Like the old prims won't still be around. "Sculpted prims are too complex for low-end to mid-range graphics cards." One sculpted prim could use fewer polygons than the tortured torus prims in most people's hair, FGS!

Sheesh... Good old Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt raise their ugly heads again.

Will sculpted prim hair move like flexy prims though?

I think amateurs can use this too, with some persistance. Sounds like using Blender will be an option, and that's free.

So far I've made a stick man.

Well now I guess we know why nothing's been fixed lately?
All the talent (such as it is) has been engaged on YET ANOTHER 'new shiny' project.
And yes - it is cool. People have been asking for something along these lines for a long time.
BUT, in a world with permanent SERIOUS database issues, soon to have voice forcible foisted on us, industrial quality lag all over - do we REALLY need something else to include the load on our rendering systems?

I don't think so.

Still, I think LL is well on the way to securing a niche for themselves in virtual world history: The company that never actually finished anything. The company with the attention span of a kitten.

SL has become a world in which interesting projects are launched, yet never finished off - a world where very little works as envisaged, very little works reliably.

The hallmark of an organisation with no defined goal, without strong unifying management - a ship with no charts, no rudder, no Captain - a ship of fools...

The sculpted prim look s like a great addition. I'm just beginning to think of applications but soft furnishings look like a good use - realistic duvets and pillows will be much more comfortable! Then we can have proper stones in our gardens, uneven beams in our buildings. If these sculpted prims are hollowable and dimplable, then prim skirts will be much better. And what about coats and puffa jackets?

I seriously doubt that will be the case. I'm sure some enterprizing person will make a store that sells all sorts of cool-shaped prims for builders to incorporate into their builds and texture for themselves.

Sure, I need to get off my booty & buy some software and learn some new stuff, but this is going to be a great new adventure and I'm excited to see what everyone will come up with.

I think you guys are missing my point. THEY DIDNT SAY THE OLD PRIMS WERE GOING AWAY! If you watch the video, you see Qarl change the sculptie prim to one of the old prim types and back! They're still there!

For making sculpties, there are tools out there that are free, like Blender. And the Sculpted Prim FAQ says that while they currently have exporters for Maya, LL hopes to have exporters for others including Blender.

Seriously y'all, it's not the end of the world, and you will still be able to build cool stuff in SL. This is just another tool to make your builds even better. Yeah, its more complex, but it's not something impossible for you to learn and do! So get busy! I can't wait to see what y'all come up with!

They aren't old either, sculpted prims is just an additional type.
