A person that I gave a notecard to about the evils of camping IM'd me with the following (name of individual taken out):
IM: ***** *******: (Saved Sat Mar 24 15:30:29 2007) btw, I've deposited over 1200 US dollars into my paypal acct from camping since November and contrary to what most people think, leaving your computer on 24/7 only costs pennies a day IF you shut your power guzzling color monitor off.
Is this possible or is this person just lying?
Let's see, 1 AV camping 24/7 on a $3L for 10min would make $1440L in a day... or about $43200L in a month. So, in 5 months (as long as the person said they've been at it), $216000L... which is about $750USD. Hmmm.... looks like it may be possible afterall.
BUT... we all know it's impossible to stay logged into SL 24/7... so to make up for this, you'll need to setup a bunch of extra alts all trying to do 24/7 camping.
So, is camping really this profitable or are my calculations off?

I suppose if you dedicated your sole purpose and time in SL to camping then I guess it would be possible. I have heard rumors of people using multiple alts to camp. Not a very fulfilling endeavor however profitable. To each their own I suppose. *Edit* - Now that I think about it. It might make good use for that dusty old computer sitting in the corner.

Sure, why not? There are many places to camp on SL, if you are running a reduced client bot, you could say logged in as long as SL is up and running. You may even be able to get 4 or 5 bots running on a single PC all camping.

That comes to about 13000L in a month as an impossible to reach top end. What with all the crashes and logouts and updates and such. Thats about 48 dollars a month. Your calculations were at least 2/3rds too high.

Don`t forget that some people have alts that sit around all day while they play on their main account.

easy money, but screwing the neighbors
03-24-2007 18:59
Leaving a dead alt parked non stop is definately easy money. Much to the detriment of the guy who cant get into his house because theres 40 other dead alts sitting around in camping chairs at the same time in the club up the street. Overworking the servers as the numbers crunch one linden at a time. 35,000 people online, sorta. Only a handful of sentient avatars wandering the landscape while 30,000 camping bots sit, thoughtlessly sucking up the bandwidth. Ive seen many of those eriely quiet camping zones absorbing the client quota while not a word is spoken between those zombies, squatting on beanbag chairs or sweeping a perfectly clean floor. Reminds of that scene in the 70's classic DAWN OF THE DEAD, " Shoot it man, shoot it in the head." Easy money but the epitome of darkest evil against ones fellow man

Im my experiance you CAN NOT do this because chairs kick you out after 3 15 min sessions, so your anti idle and everything else still works. the person running the chair gets the same benifit, your gonna stand around all nite and not suck his money. if you EVER find a chair that does not kick you out and make you stand after the 1st 3 payment cycles post it up here...
i doubt there are many left, why pay when you can get them to do it for free

There are some chairs that will let you sit a whole 24 hours. Normally, however, the chair settings are usually determined by the owner.

Don't forget that you can also run hordes of camping bots. I actually have the code for camping bots, but cannot for the life of me remember where I got it... I am pretty sure it came from a Google Code project, but I do not remember the url. And don't tell me how evil camping bots are, I totally agree. I only got the code because it had demonstration code for bot movement that was available nowhere else at that time, and I was developing a rather benign and one-of-a-kind bot [EDIT]: Found it, I was right.... Not gonna post a link, and the project looks dead now, but it was in fact a project on Google Code. Here is an example of how insidious this is: case "camp": { uint localID = FindObjectByText(details.ToLower()); if (localID > 0) { response = "Match found. Camping..."; Client.Self.RequestSit(prims[localID].ID, new LLVector3(0, 0, 0)); Client.Self.Sit(); Client.Self.Status.Controls.FinishAnim = false; Client.Self.Status.Controls.Fly = false; Client.Self.Status.Controls.StandUp = false; Client.Self.Status.SendUpdate(); } else response = "No matching objects found."; break; }

Campbots. Google for campbot. Search these forums for campbot.
I have heard reports of people running over 50 accounts at a time using campbots, the campbots can teleport, they can find the camp chairs by reading the llSetText that typically accompanies camp chairs, they can click the chairs, they can stand up in order to get paid, then search for a camp chair and sit back down.
Normal modern computers can run 25 or more campbot clients. The person running over 50 may have been using two or more computers or they might have a quad core computer or other super duper machine.

Yeah, what SuezanneC said! Personally, I think the current hubbub over landbots is largely overhyped by the people who have a vested interest in seeing them abolished, whereas campbots are rarely mentioned and even when they are it is usually with a shrug and a "whatchagonnado?"

One of SL's recent updates detects if you have another client running and will not allow you in certain camping areas, try it for yourself it will automatically not allow you access to a parcel that has any type of camping chairs in it such as casinos.

I would love to verify this... As I haven't got the slightest idea where to find such a place, could you give a hint? Seriously, I actively avoid malls, casinos, practically all mainland, anywhere with even one camping chair (with the possible exception of those that turn the camper into an NPC) is a place I will never visit again, so I honestly don't know where these "certain camping areas" are.

So... LL actually went and did something specifically about bot-camping? How bizarre....

Honestly it was a shock to me at first I didnt know what to think but yea it basically auto bans you from certain parcels or it could be some type of device the owner has. Try using two clients and go to any gold-rush, you will only be able to get one in

I saw the campbots in action and got in a big fight with one who was running them he was very smug about it told everyone in the room that he made $70 US dollars everyday.
When one of the co owners got online and we told her she came to kick them as soon as she did they all came back in 2 seconds and sat down again. As soon as one bots time was almost up a new one would rez and sit and the old one would go poof until it was time for the next round. You can see some of them at gold rush now most like to sit sideways and on people when the bot thing messes up.

What is gold rush? Is it a sim, or a mall, or what?

I am standing in the Gold Rush in Huchu right now with my alt simultaneously, no problems there Must have been something else, but it does not appear that LL has done anything to prevent this. I find it hard to believe that LL would even if they could, frankly. Seems to me more likely that WannaPiece was experiencing just more of SL's random flakiness. "Gonna have to call this one busted"

Don`t people pay electric bills? Can you image the cost to run 24 hours aday! These types of players ( maybe LLAbs workers promoto camping ) really is a total false statement. The cost to run powerful machines ( even with low conpumtion cpus ) still cost more then you camp. Unless you live with your parents, and or live in a dorm at school... these are misunderstanding and total lies. Buy money you have more fun and less of a bill to pay of electric at the end of the month..........BS is again reaching the levels of unreal again!

Are you serious? I leave my computer on all day and night... I never shut it down unless I am going to be gone for the entire day or more than one day.. my electrical bill is never more than $30-$40 USD a month and I live in a 4 bedroom 3 story house.. I dunno where you think it costs so much to leave a computer running, too funny..

I'd say the person was just lying. And wouldn't it be advantageous for a casino operator to use bots on their own chairs? They get the traffic, the transactions, and keep their money.
