Honestly, I'm a little leery of the First Look viewer being made mandatory by the end of the week. Nonetheless, here are my favorites among the bug fixes and new features. Haven't had a chance to confirm them all, but supposedly:
* Moving your avatar no longer deselects objects in build mode automatically
* Added setting to change cache location
* Objects set for sale are Buy Copy by default (instead of Buy Original)
* Fixed sitting avatar standing when clothes are dragged onto the avatar
* Fixed group members ability to set home to land only set to group (not deeded)
* Fixed closed status of folders when opened in inventory

god, i hope it's not mandatory soon. i tried it, and it won't even open to the logon page without crashing.
it's not so much a "viewer" as it is a "crasher".

Early reports from the Blog comments are of widespread crash-and-burn with the new viewer. Be forewarned, if you upldate to the new viewer it will overwrite the previous one, which could lock you out of SL if your computer isn't compatible or the viewer is borked.
I'm still using the beta version of First Look and am holding off on the update until this dust settles....

i uninstalled it and went back to 1.13.3.2 (for which i had the setup on my hard drive) and was able to get back inworld. i have no choice but to hold off. well, i could reinvest myself in rl, but where is the fun in that?

I can't confirm this (still at work), but evidently the previous (workable) viewer 1.13.3.2 is still available for download at: http://www.download.com/Second-Life/3000-7551_4-10650621.html?tag=lst-0-1Just in case someone needs to revert.

Thankfully it is running fine for me.
It was mentioned on the blog that they are having login issues unrelated to the viewer release.

I downloaded the new viewer a little while ago. Crashed on the first run with a funny 'can't find a needed file' error O_O I restarted windows, gave it another try and got in, although half my inventory was missing and I'd been Ruthed O_o Closed the viewer, started it again and now it's working fine, loving my new framerate So far so good, but I havn't really done anything yet. Time will tell if it's an improvment in the old viewer, but it's looking good for me so far. I'm going to keep my fingers cross that no one gets forced out of SL because their rig isn't up to the new viewer. Vale

Can't even connect with the new one. The progress bar just sits there, and sits there, and sits there........

Makes me glad I am not part of the Help Request Team. Oh, wait....
At least this time they are not forcing everyone right away into the new viewer. This has alway been a problem with new viewers. With changes as big as these are, I am surprised it is as stable as it is. I always am amazed how many people complain that they want everything fixed and when many things are, they still complain that not everything is.

This concerns me, as I do have an older, less than high end ATI in my machine, and the firstlook has behaved rather poorly on that card. One thing that struck me in particular was that when looking at prim plants, with the perpendicular prims, the 3d look on them was much less .. "there" .. than with the older main viewer. On the other hand, maybe I should just get a new card.. From: Vale Vieria I'm going to keep my fingers cross that no one gets forced out of SL because their rig isn't up to the new viewer. Vale

I finally was able to connect one time and I have no inventory at all.... no clothes, but I have hair and shoes Now I can't even connect. Whatever they did, they need to undo. I'm in the middle of a build and really need my inventory to come back

Post from Joshua Linden on the blog- "We’re currently experiencing an issue on the server side completely unrelated to the viewer update that are affecting logins and in-world activities. Of course, this makes any feedback about the new viewer harder to process. Expect a blog post shortly."

Beta
03-27-2007 14:21
I'm not in favor of being forced to install beta patches. I'd appreciate it if they would finish their beta testing phase before releasing. Wouldn't that be the logical thing to do?

I really don't want to spring for a new card, so I cross my fingers and wait. I reinstalled the old viewer but same result. I get as far as the Update available bix then nothing. Hopefully the problem mentioned in the blog will be corrected.

Let's get a few of the standard replies out of the way. Even Microsoft has buggy software, just look at Vista. SL will alway be in beta, it is part of being on the cutting edge of technology. It is impossible to get every bug that could occur in any system configuration across 3 different OSes. And of course, If you don't like it, leave! **This post in no way reflects my views, it is just the most common responses to the complaint.

Exactly. SL will always be evolving and never be "finished". I wish some people could see the difference from when i joined and now. Or even I would love to see the difference between the SL of now and when it first started. Then maybe they would understand.

From: tristan Eliot Exactly. SL will always be evolving and never be "finished". If SL code doesn't change, the whole concept will die. For all the residents who are screaming for a "stable" SL, bear in mind that the current approach simply will not scale to the number of people who want to live in SL. Continuing to bug fix a platform that can't scale is just a slow road to financial and technical suicide. The only way to scale SL is to replace the existing code with other, more modular or re-conceptualized approaches. First Look viewer is one such upgrade that will eventually (keeping fingers crossed) aid in the scaling effort. The inevitable and unavoidable problem for residents is that at some point bug fixes for the older parts of SL simply can't be addressed. It's a waste of time. And the new stuff is going to have lots of new bugs. Those WILL be worth fixing, but meanwhile we suffer from what feels like a system that is falling around our ears. The system as a whole is NOT getting worse. Essential parts of it are getting better, and older parts are creaking at the strain, as they wait in line to be replaced, too. The transition is going to be rough, but I'm willing to go through it because the only other alternative is to just shut off the lights and send everyone home.

Some of us have been through some nasty updates in the past so it is nothing new. You are right some parts are starting fall apart as they push forward. I hope new players will stick around long enough to understand the nature of this beast.

I am getting now very hard crashes after updating. Either the blue screen or I drop to the desktop in 256x256 black and white. Then if my system does not freeze up completely the crash logger actually crashes :/

As regards flaky perfomance in-world last night (UK) I didn't upgrade but had inventory, avatar attachment and intermittent movement problems. TP was down big-time! Bad coincidence server was having hiccups just as update hit the streets
