I was thinking (after seeing the "Final Signatures" thread), that's a good point.. the will be archived after all, why not make the best of that?

So, here we are.. a thread for your message to... THE FUTURE!!! *explosion of fireworks*

What sage advice might you have for future generations of SLers? Or perhaps some not-so-sage advice? maybe even some stuff that isn't much along the lines of advice at all?

What will your message be to *grandiose 50's voice-over* THE FUTURE??

I suppose i should start off with something, eh?

Hello THE FUTURE *blaring horns*! How are things? Just wanted to make a suggestion or two..

1) Take care in what name you give yourself! (For those perusing, but not registered)

- Since it can take a bit to get accustomed to Second Life (See #2), many times this creates a bond between yourself and your new avatar/account. I've seen many people who wish they could go back and change "JoeBob66334" or "xXxGrOoVyGaLxXx" to something they find a bit more fitting for themselves. (Not that there's anything wrong with that/those type of names if you like it that way).

So, think about what persona you may portray. What name sticks out to you as someone you can enjoy being virtually? This will matter more than you probably think it will.

2) If your new, give it time.. no, more time than that!

- For many people, it takes a considerable amount of time to find their niche. Usualy in steps of; "How do i change this avatar?!?", "How can i make money?", "What is there to actually do here?". The last one is really the key to it all.. and the answer is,m "pretty much.. anything you want to do".

Take time to explore the world. Find out what other people have done. Leave room for inspiration and don't be afraid to bring your imagination to the table! There is an ever growing world in/out (depends on your viewpoint) there, with plenty of room for you and your dreams. I'm not saying it's easy to be done, just saying that it can be done.
-

3) Don't worry.

- Lots of stuff happens in SL and LL/SL related properties. Usually, the sky doesn't fall (even though it may rain a bit). The sky of the forums is falling, no doubt about that.. not sure how the new ones will turn out yet though (we don't expect well, what's it like in THE FUTURE *huge letters plastered against the screen*?).

ok... everyone else.. your turn!

Try stuff you wouldn't have dreamed you'd ever enjoy.

I don't mean so much the 'carnal knowledge of a rutabaga' type of adventurism (though if that's your thing, it's fine with me). I mean something along the lines of: just because you've never tried building a house, don't assume you won't enjoy it.

So, go ahead: go perform at a poetry slam; go make a pair of boots; go make sound effects and upload them; go sailing; go join a political-debate club.

Give it a shot...it's only your Second Life, and you CAN take a chance, here.

Sweet words, Ponsonby... very nice.

I would say, "Be Kind." followed up by, "Don't Assume."

Next I throw a bunch of nonverbal 'love you' gestures and some 'stay sweet as you have always been' signatures.

I think it is bedtime for bonzo here but I just want to wish blessings upon all. :)

night night.

LL said the same thing about archiving the forums when they closed the xstreet forums.

Where are they now?

Prepare to move. Copy and save anything you consider important.

When it is closed it is gone.

they did archive the originally culled forums and i do believe they at least recognize the wealth of knowledge in these forums. I'm inclined to believe they will be successfully archived.

but.. we shall see in THE FUTURE *digital 80s sparks fx*!

#1 Never, ever forget to have fun

#2 First off, seek out a niche; then, don't be afraid to find new niches, or expand from where you started.

#3 "Your World, Your Imagination" is not a singular statement. Everyone has their own reason to be here, and they may be radically different from your own. SL has enough room for everyone to coexist and find their own way of being.

#4 First Life before Second Life. Never forget which one has priority or neglect one's duties away from The Grid.

#5. Related to #4. For some, Second Life *is* their real life, or at least a big chunk of same.

#6 Never, ever forget to have fun. It bears repeating.

#7 Silliness is its own reward.

#8 Help new people. They could some day be your best friend -- or your best customer, if you own a business. We were all new once.

#9 Nothing is forever, and change is a constant. This is doubly true in SL.

#10. When it doubt, the answer is "pie."

I'm going to QFT Mari's statement, and add:

#11 Amazing things can and do happen in SL. Always keep an open mind to life, liberty, and the pursuit of friendship.

#12 Humanity is what drives Second Life. A corporation might own it, but SL would be nothing without its residents. Honor the creative spark that IS Second Life.

#14 Never click on a sign that says "Feed the birds"; you'll be crushed by a falling anvil.

Advice? Don't believe *anything* written here, or in any other forum, or anywhere on the internet, or even in the real world, especially stuff in the newspapers. And the same goes for what people say, as well.

When going Premium, think carefully about whether to make your main active account or a funtionary alt your premium. There are advantages in both - in my case I'm the Premium and the alt just sits on groups and accepts test boxes of sale products and sometimes gets its avatar made to look funny.

Explore, explore, explore for it may be gone tomorrow -- how many fantastical regions have come in gone? Too many.

Similar to above, buy, buy, buy. If you find something that you like, and think you may be able to use one day, acquire it or risk it vanishing forever if the merchant leaves SL.

And explore yourself... truly explore yourself... in this incredible limitless world.

Believe.

And be careful about accepting "gifts" from strangers.. there are objects out there that can do some harm. So, if you aren't sure if something is trustworthy, don't accept it.

If you do end up with an object that does "bad things" (takes your money, deforms your avatar, etc.), immediately submit an Abuse Report from in-world (Help > Report Abuse). If you don't know what name to report, you can report a Linden name instead (such as, Governor Linden)... just give the best description you can and the RESI Team will look into it.

-

When selling land, do NOT use "Sell to Anyone" unless you really want ANYONE to be able to buy it, the instant you set it for sale. If you are selling to a friend, a partner, yourself or anyone in particular.. use Sell to "a Specific person", using the Resident Chooser. There are "land bots" (at least there are currently) which can detect land for sale and buy it in a split second.

-

Don't forget your saltshaker, you may need a few grains here and there. :)

Live as one of them, Kal-El, to discover where your strength and your power are needed. Always hold in your heart the pride of your special heritage.

They can be a great people, Kal-El. They wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you, my only son.

Lastly, do not punish yourself for your feelings of vanity. Simply learn to control them. It is an affliction common to all - even on Krypton. Our destruction could have been avoided had it not been for the vanity of some who considered us indestructible.

Were it not for vanity, why, at this very moment ... I could embrace you in my arms.

My son.

If someone loves you, and you don't love them back, don't pretend you do and call it role play. Be decent. Tell them the truth so they can move past it. Be kind, every avatar has a typist. Notice the beauty as you travel your SL journey. Remember friends here are the same as friends anywhere. Practice patience, it's good for you. Everyone you meet in any life has gone through something, is going through something or is about to go through something. Embrace your SL, it can be what you want it to be.

I met a traveller from an antique land

Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone

Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,

Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown

And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command

Tell that its sculptor well those passions read

Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,

The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.

And on the pedestal these words appear:

"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:

Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"

Nothing beside remains. Round the decay

Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare

The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Yes, it's cheating (unless everybody knows the score, which they probably don't, or you wouldn't be wondering).

Oh, and ... never fall in love with somebody because you like their hair ... just get the hair!
(this is good advice for RL too)

Use your common sense about what people say... dont trust automatically, don't mistrust automatically.

IF someone helped you when you were new, Pay it forward

Don't be afraid to try new things.. what's the worst that can happen?

Your friends list is your treasure

Search is your friend

Learn to build, its really not hard, leave a mark on the Second Life world... Something you made that made someone smile.

Enjoy Second Life

If you find something in SL you are passionate about doing the DO IT!

Don't let the fact that you are coming years after the start prevent you. This still is a place where miracles can happen but only YOU can make your dreams a reality.
