I just read about a new device that let's you stream the content from your PC onto your main television screen. Is anyone using something like this? Got me to thinking about what it would be like to run SL on the large screen in the main room. Where do you enter SL and how does your RL environment impact the experience?

My PC is in a spare bedroom set up as a sort of office. There are no other electronic devices ibn the room, sometimes I'll turn up the stereo from the living room, ot the TV if it's baseball season, while at the PC.

Where do you enter SL and how does your RL environment impact the experience? Interesting question -- I'm looking forward to the answers. I enter SL from the family computer room. My partner sits at her computer, directly across from me, so we can talk to each other about what we're both doing. She's usually preoccupied with online geneaological research or political discussion forums, and I'm immersed in a virtual landscape. So the comments we exchange are quite diverse, as you can well imagine. ME: Oh, look! The combat arena has a lava pit that swallows up the losing contestant. (Sound from computer: "Aiiieee!! Hisss" ![]() HER: I just found the land grant that (insert ancestor's name) received for his service in the Civil War. |

an odd room which used to be a chamber, with about 4... no, 5 machines, including a Mac. My husband is often sitting next to me at his own computer, while I'm on SL. He often overhears my music as I overhear the sounds of his games (current one being armed assault, not the quietest game ever).
We are often invaded by strange hairy little creatures, which usually stomp the keyboards, insist on watching the screens while sitting on the mice... after a while we adopted the critters and named them cats. Their favorite game is to fight on our desks and to stand between us and our screens. Oh and they emit strange low-frequency relaxing sounds too. |

All of our computers, with the exception of the laptop, are in the living room. *grins* In a family of gamers, it was the only way I could think of for us to be able to see each other on a regular basis. Plus, I've got a kiddo and his comp is within screen sight of mine.
Unfortunately, we don't have a cable long enough to run it to the TV! Probably just as well ![]() _____________________

Myself and my husband have two laptops side by side on the coffee table, in front of the sofa and facing a big widescreen tv in the living area

I have my PC in my bedroom-come-office. I'm now the only inhabitant of the house so this has now become the hub of operations.
My fiancee lives 75 miles away and accesses SL in her spare bedroom-come-office. She has a large bundle of ginger fur we call a cat too who also delights in using the keyboard as a massage bed. SL for us is a vital lifeline of communication having first met on a game support forum about 8 years ago ..... yes .. long engagement! ![]() |

We have here upstairs a room that I guess you can call a "study". There are two desks, one with two computers (one stronger to handle SL and Everquest... and the other is an older one and is used for MSN, ICQ and alike).
There is also a TV/Media set, a very comfy leather chair. We/I use this room to do work at home. Or to read without any disturbance. Or watch something on TV when the others want to watch something else downstairs. And of course I play Second Life/Everquest here. And my youngster Everquest. My partner is not really into computer games.... at least not as much as we are ![]() Now our youngster is 18 she has our trust to use the computer without our "control". Yet she asked us to lock out a lot of content she doesn't want to be confronted with. Nice detail: In the summer we can open up two doors in the is room and from the balcony there is a wonderful view on the grasland with our horses and the forest behind it. Morwen. |

Where do I enter SL from IRL"?
The nude of course. ![]() As for wireless throws of digital data to a living room TV? Try an 8' wide "Video Wall Of Doom" pumped from a DLP projector. I found HDTVs that featured VGA inputs that could handle computer resolutions natively just a tad too expensive for my tastes. As for getting wireless tosses from point A to B, that too is a cool grand *if* you want it done right and support your PC's full video output quality. Oh, and I fight my black hairbeast (The Cat(tm)) for use of my hands for SL. If the cries for attention go unanswered, he will insinuate himself between my eyes and the PC monitor, sit his fuzzy arse on the keyboard and gurgle-mew in my face. I have to get video of him doing this one day... |

My PC is in the family room. Same room as the TV and the stereo, and right in the center of the traffic flow through our home. It's in a corner, with my back to the TV and the screen facing the room. This means I have absolutely NO privacy from the rest of my family most of the time when I am on SL, and that most of the time, there is music or TV noise, or noise from the nearby kitchen, when I am on-line.

The den. No need for the ability to stream to my TV, it's already the primary monitor for my computer via HDMI. It's a 57" Samsung DLP HDTV and I sit relaxed in a lazboy recliner about 7' away with a full 5.1 Yamaha surround setup. The keyboard and mouse are wired, but the USB hub is hidden next to the chair for discreet connection. Soon as the new wireless USB hits stores, I'll plug into that.

I come in from my home office, which straddles the living and dining "rooms" in my apartment. Technically, I'm in the dining area, while my printer and scanner is in the living room. The wood floor/carpet line is the demarcation.

Great thread, Alastair.
I access SL from a Mac in my bedroom. How does my RL impact on my SL experience? Well, I've learned how to go without food but can't do without coffee. I have frequent coffee breaks interspersed with other breaks consequent upon the first. I also share my home with a furry called Mia who has a cool Jack Russell av, but isn't into SL as much as I am. I've told her that if she's hungry she should go out and kill something but she hasn't taken the hint. She also expects me to walk her and play with her. How she'll cope when I stop exploiting her and release her into the wild, I have no idea. |
