@Suzeanne - couldn't it be that your quote from Peter Linden was speaking to that particular discussion, and not to the forums in general? He was asking for comments on some issue, and saying, "Whatever you say is going to be heard elsewhere"?

Such a comment and warning reinforces the idea that the forums were NOT going to be made public. Couldn't it?

I'm not trying to be Byzantine in my logic here - it just seems bound to that context, the way you quote it.

Seven and Argent, from time to time I make a comment that is not entirely serious.

Sometimes I telegraph the punch by using a smiley.

"As Peter Linden speaks, so shall it come to pass. Eventually. :p "

The smiling sticking out tongue indicates one is making a smart-alecky joke.

Having to explain it is an example of "Comedy Failure" somewhere in the comedic process.

The quote from Peter Linden is the oldest post that I can find, and given it's title, date, and content, I think it was the very first post in "the forums". As I interpret things, that was the initial "Welcome to the forums" message. There weren't any other threads or posts to be referring to. It could only be referring to what would come later. I think he actually was saying "consider what you say, it won't stay hidden forever".

I came across that post while looking at things like the oldest form member, oldest post, and other things triggered by the impending death of the forums.

The idea that subsequent users years later would be expected to hunt down this policy statement in the forum's first post is of course absurd. The absurdity is what makes it be a joke.

I have a strong suspicion that these old forums will not be archived so much as Lindenized. Oh well.

I am very glad these forums are being archived - it would be terrible to lose all of that, but I can't see the advantage of making them available without a login. I can't see much of anything here that would be relevant to anybody who was not in SL.

It's only a little thing - anybody determined to dig dirt can just make an account, log in and carry on digging, but the solution is only a little thing too - just keep the login requirement.

TBH, Lord, I did have a few qualms back in the summer when you were archiving the Zindra threads, but that was just a few isolated threads, you told us what you were doing at the time and it was for a very good cause.

The people I really feel for are those who have been, posted and gone and have no idea this is happening.

This should be a huge concern for everyone. I won't list all the possible scenarios of why the forum should require a log in. It is particularly unfair for those who are not aware at the moment, that probably need to go back and remove some stuff.

Definitely archive for SL users, but to take all this stuff out of context, and plaster it all over the internet with a google search, particularly after that was NOT the arrangement when everyone posted here....is wrong.

I definitely can understand the concerns of making the forum easily searcable. I have no issues myself, there is nothing that I really don't want found, but others may.

One thing that's quite odd is that there is a portion of SLA called the Commerce forum, I think, where discussions are already allowed.

The problem is, I can never find it, except by accident.

Sometimes, for some reason, Lexie will not lock a discussion, but instead silently move it to the Commerce forum.

The easiest way to get to that forum, is to pull down your Shopping tag on home page, then click on Forum....there you are. If you use the other route and go the Blog pull down, you have to take a few more steps.

Thanks. I'll try to remember that.

But I'm getting to thinking that the easiest and most reliable way to navigate the new thing is to set a great many bookmarks.

I kind of prefer the "Feelin' Lucky?" approach, like google has, but not as effective. I pull up home page, then scan down to the "Recent Activity" scroll....just hit something at random, and Voila! You are right in the middle of a blog category that you never even knew existed!

And that's back on topic as one of the things I like about the new place. Where you end up is highly Unpredictable. It's like pulling up the map inworld, and blind TPing naked, into a group of green dots. Major Fun.

If that was the case, they wouldn't be pushing us to Facebook and Avatars United.

This is SUCH a dumb move. SL is a communication platform. Because of its other capabilities, it's a compromised one, to a certain extent. But even so, it's about communication.

And the company that owns it wants us Residents to LEAVE the grid and go off to 2D sites like FB and AU to do our communicating!

For those who use SL *primarily* for social networking, this strategy is likely to succeed all too well. They'll spend less time in world. They will not buy land, not get involved. Their communication needs will be met with faster, simpler tools that better meet their primary needs.

LL is shooting themselves in both feet this time.

I just noticed that the blogrums count every view of a topic even within the same session... so if you're reading a long thread like https://blogs.secondlife.com/thread/8563 in "flat" then the blogrums adds 7 extra views whereas the forums would only count 1.

Guess I shouldn't be surprised that LL is stacking the deck... I always just assumed their "half a million views" were counted similarly to how the forums count them.
