There I was yesterday minding my own business when a blue rectangle appeared saying that UnknownAvatar WithTooMuchMoney (not his real name LOL) had paid me 5250. There was a satisfying cash register sound and suddenly my bank balance looked very healthy indeed.
I had never heard of this avi, so I checked my transaction history and it was shown as a gift. I also looked back to see if I'd bought anything from him - but there was nothing. I haven't been involved in any transaction disputes: over missing or defective items, for instance. I haven't sold any land I'd forgotten about - besides it would have been shown as a Land Sale.
I IM'd him to ask why he had sent me this money, but have had no reply.
Who are you, Mysterious Stranger? Did we meet in a former life? Are you an alt with a guilty conscience trying to Right a Great Wrong? Did you see me from afar and fall hopelessly in love? And, most important of all, are you going to ask for your dosh back, or is it OK to spend, spend spend?
Has anyone else ever had anything like this happen to them?

I met a newbie girl last month who accidentally right clicked and paid the wrong avatar L$3,000. She didn't realise until he came back asking for another L$3,000 and a s**t storm ensued because he'd spent the first amount.
If you can't account for it, I'd give it back. But double, triple and quadruple check that you're giving it to the right person and take a screenshot of your transactions page afterwards. L$5250 (approx. $19USD) isn't worth the potential drama. If it really was meant for you, he'll give it to you again.

LOL - you're probably right. I won't spend it, but I think I'll wait for a reply to my IM first. I was in my house so I can't see how he could have right-clicked my avi by mistake, and since he's not in my friends list, I don't see how he could have clicked the wrong person there either.
Curiouser and curiouser.

Sometimes I search my alts and then choose them and pay them some of my $L's. Maybe this guy was in a hurry and clicked on your name by mistake? Just one possible thought. Noone can make you return it if he demands it back but something tells me they may have thought you were someone else. *sigh* I remember when Chip Midnight paid me 10K accidentally.....errr forget I mentined that!

This has happened to me a few times while camping.
The owner of the chairs, tired after a long day, just wanting to fill up the chairs and go to bed, accidentally paid me instead of the chair. WHile at first it was quite tempting to keep it, I did indeed give it back each time it happened. She of course then would put the money in the chair, and I'd do my time to earn that money back from her, in 10 minute increments.
If I hadn't given it back.. I would feel really scummy going back to her campsite and leeching MORE money on top of the money she hadn't intended to give me.
Last time, she thanked me for my honesty.. I told her that I didn't want to scam her that way, that personal integrity is all we can truly bring from reality into Second Life... and something that I want to still have intact when I leave.

From: Aislin Keynes Anyone remember the old TV show "The Millionaire"? Heh - yes. Once long ago I was been searching for a particular avatar's profile, then when I saw it in the list, dropped what I was giving her on the profile of the FIRST person in the list. d'oh!

Why was it 5250 and not just 5000? Sounds like an accident to me...but you knever know... Maybe they just quit and gave all thier cash to the first person they saw? So, lets bet on how long Francesca can hold on to the cash before spending it... I'd say 7 days...

Exactly what I've been wondering, Jami From: Jami Sin So, lets bet on how long Francesca can hold on to the cash before spending it... I'd say 7 days... ROTFLOL Thanks for all the feedback, guys - I didn't think it would cause so much interest. Hmmm - there's an idea - bank the 5250 and earn interest. I like the idea of a secret admirer, not sure about the stalker, though. [giggle] I can't say I've ever found a $10 - but that's probably because I'm in the UK, hehehe. Still, all I've ever found is small-denomination coins. I IM'd the guy again but have had no response. I'm now wondering if it's someone I know who forgot he was logged in as an alt when he paid me. I'll wait for, er, 7 days [giggle] and then spend ... I mean ... give it back.

One question occurs to me when reading this thread.
Do you sell anything? Someone may have been trying to buy something from you, say for example that costs 250 lindens, and was typing the amount on the numeric keypad. It's easy to mistakenly hit both 5 and 2 and have 250 turn into 5250.

Maybe this donor of yours was someone who had gotten so disenfranchised of second life that they decided to leave forever and give some random person out of the blue all of their last remaining linden...

I knew a guy who left SL and gave me all his money. So I gave it all away to various people doing good stuff in SL, helped by Loki Pico who steered me to some interesting projects. It was a lot of fun giving money away. I was sorry when it ran out. Sometimes people will give me money for things I make for fun. I give it back. They give it right back. I keep it I'm intrigued to hear the end of this story...
