As the title of the thread states, if voice was a feature that was only available to premium account holders would you upgrade from a free account to a premium account to have it?

Probably, because if you didn't no one would talk to you.

By making voice a premium only feature, it would erode new members coming in at all. Imagine being a newbie and you walk up to a group of people who are all standing silently next to each other. You try to type a message but everyone else has voice so they ignore you. That would be my concern--so I think it was good to make voice a free upgrade for everyone.

yup...but I'm already premium with a decent amount of land so I guess I'd get it anyway! ;)

/me wonders what the point of this thread is other than another affirmation that most of the people in the forum agree with each other?

On the flipside, however, throwaway accounts couldnt use voice as an untrackable griefing media.

Hmm.. too bad there isn't a choice for "No, but I'm already a premium." If I hadn't been, I still wouldn't have been willing to upgrade for Voice. It's not a feature I'll use all that much.. if any.

...because people running up and saying "you suck n00b" is a real problem in SL and needs to be stopped at all costs!

That is one very good reason to support Voice as a Premium account perk.

Personally, I am not in the slightest bit interested in Voice, so I wouldn't care at all if they made it a Premium only ability.

I would definitely support adding voice as a premium-only feature, since Premium account status is currently not compelling enough to stand on its own.

Having said that, voice itself is not a compelling enough feature for me to be willing to switch to premium if I have not already. But the more features that are added, the more enticing a Premium account will become.

Nope. I'm already premium, and don't want voice.

But by all means it sounds like a good idea, LL claimed they wanted ideas to make Premium more attractive. Making it a requisite in order to use voice would make it much more attractive, to those who wanted voice.

I still think voice was added as a corporate cash "host your meetings & tradeshows here!" kinda lure. That we also get it is just a bonus for those that want it and a (minor?) inconvenience for those that don't.

I'm not interested in voice so making it premium-only wouldn't really sway me either way.

edit: and, if I did want it, I think maybe having premiums be at a better bitrate (if that can be done) might be a better idea than having it just be off for non-premiums. They'd get a better attach rate if people could try it out first.

I agree with the notion of adding it to the premium benefits. Premium needs to be more enticing to the average new guy than it is now. I bet that would crank it up some!

I wonder how much they would have to charge in place of charging private sim owners to cover the cost?

Also, I think voice chat shouldn't be able to be restricted on people's property like it is now if it's an added benefit to premium. Maybe make it so you can't hear voice from outside your land or something. Otherwise that's like restricting IM use. If I'm paying extra for a feature I shouldn't be penalized because you don't like the particular medium I use to communicate.

None of that will happen, though.

Nope

Nada

Nuh uh.

I'm just curious as to exactly why some people are head over heels in love with this voice thing?? I met a guy who was so persistant and insistant on the voice thing. I don't get it. So I did it once, hopefully he's happy Im not a guy.. but seriously... I have voice on yahoo. Why have it here? I get so annoyed with sound effects anyway. Just something else I have to turn off or down

I'm already a premium, so it's kinda beside the point. I would not upgrade for voice.

Dat said, if SL were to decide to start charging for voice, after giving it away for free. it would be a really bad move, I tink.

We're not so much head over heals in love with it as some are just so dawgamd against it. It’s an option, not a puppy.

I'm pretty sure that's what they said they were going to do, though? After 2007, they were going to start charging island owners who had voice enabled, and after 60 days they were going to apply a fee to 'formal groups' for using group voice chat.

Personally I'm liking this idea of making it a premium-only feature. Since they appearantly indicated that there was overwhelming community demand for voice, it ought to drive their premium numbers up significantly so everyone who demanded it can continue using it.

Makes more sense to me than, say, making landowners pay more to support it for everyone else.

Apologies of course, for repeating arguments others have brought up for months.

again i read that "they appearantly indicated that there was overwhelming community demand for voice" ... who EXACTLY are "they"?

i for one was never asked.

nor do i ever remember seeing a questionaire from LL about such a thing.

i have many enlish-is-not-my-first-language friends here in sl. many have good english reading and writing skills. but many admit to not being able to understand spoken english very well. or say that their spoken english is almost incomprehensible.

my fear that voice will be way of making them second class sl residents.. that is, ppl using voice and expecting EVERYONE to use it too.

and of course, sl has been a level playing field for those unable to speak at all. so much for a level playing field.

Well you can still vote as a hypothetical if you were not a premium account as to whether this would be an incentive to do so.

This isn't meant to be thread on pros and cons of voice as a feature. I don't see them rolling back a feature they spent so much time implementing so arguments for and against are academic at this point. It's simply a poll to see if people want the feature enough to upgrade to have it. Currently there is very little incentive for most free account holders to upgrade to premium.

That's an assumption which probably would not be true. Many who advocated the implementation of voice have already taken the position that they will not exclude people not using voice from conversation. This would in all likelihood be true for many more people using voice if it were only available to premium users because there would be far more people who have to communicate with typed chat, especially when coupled with those people on premium who wouldn't be inclined to use voice anyway.
