You will be a newbie forever as long as you wear strobe lights all over yourself, use an AO that makes you do ridiculous poses and say XD after every sentence. :)

[OffTopic] By the way, can anyone tell me what thought and logic is behind the air-typing animations and (even worse) the typing sound? I didn't read anything about invisible keyboards in Snow Crash. Is it supposed to show a new resident: this is no game, this is serious business (or just a giant chat room)? I still fail to understand it. [/OffTopic]
:)

I do like the air typing... it simply shows when someone is responding. If you ask someone a question, and there's no air typing, you'd never know if they were going to respind. The typing sound i hate, and have turned off SFX... but it can be useful also. If I'm afk, and someone comes to me and i hear the typing, i can know to look at the computer.

XD <--- i still dont know what that means

XD means you are familiar with AOL and proud to admit it! As far as muting typing sounds just put / before you type.

[....]Well, after joining the game for a second time (with a new account since I couldn't remember my old password)[....]
Have you ever tried to recover your old account? Does it still exist? Does your old e-mail account still work? Have you tried to log into the Website with your old account, and press the "I forgot my password" button instead of the "Log In" button?

Thanks for the explanation :) I always pondered if it had something to do with raised eyebrows.
Well, even a roleplayer can get used to smileys. A shorthand form of "/me smiles" makes more sense than the typical lol. Why do people laugh loud all the time, I wonder? "Yesterday I went looking for new clothes lol (translates to: /me laughs out loud) found a nice dress rofl (= /me rolls around on the floor, laughing maniacally)"... I often fail to see the joke.

Yes, I did that later, after paying $10 for an alt account. When I needed another non-crafter alt (2 Ishtara's didn't make much sense), I thought I'd just pay another $10... but ran into the message that I wasn't allowed more than two accounts. I decided to cancel my old account, since the new one owned land already. That didn't change anything though, the cancelled account still counted towards my account maximum. So I payed $10 again to revive the cancelled Ishtara #1... $20 for nothing. Well, I'm a person who just tries things out without reading tutorials or FAQs first :) can be expensive sometimes. Ishtara #1 now serves as a model and test customer.

Thanks for the tip though :)

When I first started on the Internet I thought it stood for "Lots of Love".

LOL [coughs]

I know I'm guilty of overusing it - Actually, I think it's become one of those meaningless add-ons like "actually" that I am also guilty of overusing in RL, actually.

Silly question, I know, but I've noticed some posters who joined in October this year referring to others as newbies. It seems to me that you would have to be a resident a lot longer than a month at the most before you stopped being a newbie. Of course a _week_ is a long time in SL. :)

Just curious.

Don't forget, the date on the forums/fora indicates the date they joined the forum. Mine says August I think, but I joined in June of this year. Am I still a newb? I have had many many big ideas, but have found it impossible to raise start-up capital. LL makes it almost impossible for anyone in the UK to setup a premium account by demanding that PayPal accounds have verified status. I don't want to go into that, it's been discussed enough. Do you have to own land maybe to stop being a newbie? As a software engineer (I know in previous posts I said I was an academic lawyer - I am, I have two degrees and am a member of the Inner Temple inn of court), I had the skills to become familliar with the interface on SL within about 2 hours of the basics and had pretty much mastered it by the end of my second day (seriously, it's all there in the help feature). I still consider myself a newbie though, because I don't own land and therefore have no real place that I can call my own. I'm something of a wandering gypsy really.

Can anyone in turn tell me what this smiley is supposed to say: ^.^ or ^^ ? Guess I'm getting old.

Zounds = "God's Wounds" by the way and is a 16th century a blasphemous statement of vexation, ire, suprise, shock or general bafflement. Like "Jesus Christ!". My personal favourite though is "Christ on a bike!"

Oh no, owning land is no measure of newbieness IMO. It's not tough to figure out how to buy that 512 lot but there are many out there that don't have the need to be a land owner. I think I agree with the statement that in a sense we will all remain newbies as long as there are things to learn and new places to discover.

You know, I always thought it was meant to be a typo, like someone meant to type "omg" and ended up with "zomg." Like how "teh" and "pwned" got started. But now that I come to think of it, I don't see how "zomg" would happen as a typo. So the Z really means "zounds," huh? Fascinating what you can learn on the forums sometimes. :p

"pwned" is a typo of "owned," an expression used in online games to indicate when you have dominated an opponent. The typo is so common that now "pwned" is the term used.

45 Days

Dearly Darlings,

You must forgive old age...

I think the new citizen teller at the New Citizen Center stops giving out funds at 45 days. So 45 days would be my guess...but proper manners would aways be my personal first test.

Ever Yours,

Mrs. Showdog Tiger

For me, the newbie "title" expires when you start treating Second Life like its your first! LMAO .. ie.. you bump into someone.. you say excuse me... you don't stand too close to someone.. give them their virtual bubble space... LOL ....you don't map people and "pop in" unexpectedly, etc. you get the idea..once you learn the commonly accepted SL manners. When you stop treating Second Life like another souless chat room, but rather, you act like you would in RL as a normal respectable human being.

In general, it seems this concept takes about 3 weeks to a month to occur, depending on how long the person stays in world.

I haven't really thought about it, but those are some of my generalizations. hehe

From my own "newbie" standards, I tend to regard those born in 2004 as mentors and those in 2003 as gods residing in the heavens. LMAO (although a few of em can be a bit devlish)
