Silly question, I know, but I've noticed some posters who joined in October this year referring to others as newbies. It seems to me that you would have to be a resident a lot longer than a month at the most before you stopped being a newbie. Of course a _week_ is a long time in SL.

Well, I met someone the other day who seemed to be having trouble and I asked him if he was new. He said, no, he's been around for 2 days now, so he's not new.
So based on that, the answer is: 2 days. |

Those who started after 12/22/03 are newbies. Those who started before are fossils.

My honest opinion....
either 2 views: view 1: Once you've done and learned all the basics once: Built something Bought something Been to an event & got a basic understanding of your friends list, inventory, search, build, the map, and other basic commands. ..... some other things that'll make you even less a newb: buy a first land, script, start selling things. view 2: Once you have gotten an amazing idea and have followed through to begin working on it(lots of ideas come from day 1 to day 7, but one you finally decide to do ONE BIG IDEA.)... Then you start on the BIG project, get it underway...... when you come to the conclusion that it isn't working the way you planned, and begin on your next project... thats when you're not a newbie (approx 3 months) _____________________

I first heard about SL 18 months or so ago. I meant to join, but you know how it is ...
When I listen to old-timers [G] I wish I'd been here in the pioneering days. And it sounds as if although there were fewer features then, it was a kinder world. SIGH _____________________

I think you stop beeing a newbie when you stop behaving like one.
Imo asking questions and for other people's help isn't necessarly the sign of a newbie. Commenting on others, calling them newbies for whatever reason, rude and ignorant behaviour (except if there is a rp reason) are indicators for me. If I get into a situation I don't know how to handle I take a step back, see how people around me react and behave and ask questions. I think noone will look down on you for that. You start, you run around in-world and see a lot of things. After 6 months you decide you want to create yourself some clothes - you ask. 3 months later you start with scripting - you ask. You want to do a really cool new dance animation after having been ingame for 18 months - you ask. Beeing new to something, learning something is a great thing! Let's enjoy it as it means developement. |

But you must remember there is a big difference between being a newbie and being a noob. Newbs can and will learn. Noobs are forever trapped in their own stupidity. The six month old AV who is still in stock skins, clothes and hair, who comes up and asks "Hey wanna preform sexual relations with me." (editied for pg rating) is clearly a noob.

A resident ceases to be a newbie when the new car smell goes away. All newbies smell like new cars.

What about this:
You arent a newbie anymore when you start blaming LL in the forums or blog for something and you have at least 2 blings attached. Edit: Forgot, and you stop requesting strangers friendship. |

I am newbie even though I did have account years ago but wasn't able to stay around long because of real life distractions.
I am newbie because as of week or so of playing I have made some unpleasant and costly decissions based on inexperience. I have gotten stuck few times. In fact right now I am stuck and I can't stand up. I lost my textures of these items I made clothing, avatar body...face still there though and I don't know always who to ask. I have few people who have been kind enough to help me but I don't know if I know them long enough to call them "friends" but most time I am sitting in my hot spring all alone trying to figure out things. I won't be newbie when I know how to do things without glitches and I know where to go to hang for different things and got friends in world. Or maybe I won't have many friends I tend to be loner in the real world too. |

I'd say I'm not a newbie, but I still do many 'newb' things.... it's all about the areas of focus and what people have decided to learn.
I still am wearing newbie hair and clothes. I still dont know what ZOMG means I still dont know how to friend up with a person not standing in front of me I still accidentally bump into people when walking, then stop and say sorry, then bump them even more. I have only written 2 scripts I have really never used or found use for gestures and animations I have never gone to a club for a contest I have only had AV sex once, I laughed and commented on how stupid it was, I completely didn't get the point, in the middle of it I went to the kitchen to make a sandwich and when I came back I was AFK and I noticed my penis was coming out of her stomach. _____________________

I first heard about SL 18 months or so ago. I meant to join, but you know how it is ... When I listen to old-timers [G] I wish I'd been here in the pioneering days. And it sounds as if although there were fewer features then, it was a kinder world. SIGH I can relate to that. My first avatar, Ishtara Dougall, arrived here in 2005 and did only stay for one evening. My thoughts at that time were: avatar controls intuitive (good ol' cursor control, no awkward point-and-click), graphics a little moldy but bearable, nice enough all in all... so, what can I do here? I tried myself at a body shape and attempted to shape my hair into something halfway decent (with unsatisfying results), had a look at the SecondLife\Character\ folder on my HD and painted my first skin based on the bump maps in there. Yay! Poser Light. At least the face looked more or less right after the fifth upload, so I felt ready to venture out and left the newbie island. When I arrived at a welcome area, I got the shock of my life: air-typing! What the... everyone around me was typing on invisible keyboards, so it seemed to be a feature, not a bug. I instantly had enough of SL. As a roleplayer, I was used to have my character talking, not typing. I logged out and uninstalled the client for this peculiar world, where everyone was able to fly but looked like a lunatic when trying to communicate. [OffTopic] By the way, can anyone tell me what thought and logic is behind the air-typing animations and (even worse) the typing sound? I didn't read anything about invisible keyboards in Snow Crash. Is it supposed to show a new resident: this is no game, this is serious business (or just a giant chat room)? I still fail to understand it. [/OffTopic] Well, after joining the game for a second time (with a new account since I couldn't remember my old password), I got used to the odd avatar behaviour (and animation overriders). Discovered building and LSL programming, bought a plot of land, opened a shop and cursed myself that I didn't stay the first time. And I still find myself wishing that SL was just a tad more... game-ish and roleplayer friendly. More of a virtual world and less of an application. And I still feel like a newbie sometimes ![]() |
