If anything Lindal's post is one of the few criticisms of LL's practices that I haven't found to be overly critical by comparison.

I agree; it's one of the things I liked about her post, even if, as Ponsonby correctly points out above, it WAS critical.

So much of this is about tone, and about displaying a willingness to be constructive rather than merely critical. An avalanche of nastiness is more likely to entrench LL in their positions, as the wagons circle in self-defence. Much more is accomplished by demonstrating that one believes that change is possible (even if one is actually unsure that this is true).

Yeah, right. The Romans and Genghis Khan demonstrated that reasonable consultation and mediation was the way to get things done.

Right. An excellent lesson from history. Nearer to home, of course, we've already discovered that hurling abuse at LL achieves sooooo much, haven't we?

Excellent post, Lindal - I wish I'd been awake to sign it before it was locked.

I seem to remember there was once an "open letter" that LL heeded and which may have made a small difference (the "no more shinies 'til some bugs are fixed" one). That was, IIRC, on an external site. Of course, that was in a different era when Philip was still here. If we did that now, we couldn't even put the URL in our sigs at the new place. :(

What if we all copied the letter onto notecards and sent them to M or some other Linden with a bit of clout?

A very cool idea!

(Until we all get ARed for spamming the company's CEO, of course! :D )

I agree with you that hurling abuse is unlikely to achieve much. But I think an important point to note is that Lindal's blog-post was treated as if its content was bitter, abusive, negative, cynical insults------------

------------even though it contained not one scintilla of such content.

Yes, we should remain civil.

But we should be aware that we are dealing with some people (I refuse to believe it's ALL Lindens) who simply don't care if we are civil, reasoned, and fair in acknowledging what's been done right.

What to do in such a situation?

I think many of us believe that the right thing to do is to continue to voice our suggestions, hoping that they may be taken in the constructive spirit in which they are offered.

(Yes, there is the odd lapse into bitterness. But I think most of us know that we must strive to acknowledge that many Lindens do care about fair dealing; it's both unfair and counterproductive to indulge in 'all Lindens are blankety-blanks' sorts of posting.)

Guerilla warfare is the answer. It was how the Germans beat the Romans and how the Vietnamese humiliated the Americans.

Ironically, I never use the word to describe the body part. Also I didn't mean it to describe everyone who resides in that place, it was aimed at the self appointed Blogorama Brownshirts. I never liked tattletails.

You needn't have bothered though. As long as there are places to do it, there are always brown-noses sucking up to the authorities. Maybe they think they'll be treated favourably should any occasion arise, but that doesn't seem to happen. Perhaps because the authorities recognise them for what they are.

The open letter achieved nothing, the adult open letter last year achieved nothing, Jack said he'd had no contact from people saying they didn't agree with the proposed adult changes and the avalanche of notecards and IMs he received after that achieved nothing.

I do think you may be onto a victory since they're claiming they're looking at a discussion area. If you do it will be the first victory in a long time. However, just like all the fixes we're waiting for from the hurried and sloppy adult content implementation I would suggest that if it doesn't happen within a week of the closedown you can file it with all the other empty promises.

I've got to say that up until about 6 months ago I had never used the C word nor ever thought it. Then I noticed I was directing that curse quite regularly at LL. It wasn't good and it's certainly not healthy. It's a sign of victimhood, trapped in a poxy situation and not having the spine to say screw you and leave.

I'm now effectively a SL web based presence. I've substantially cut my hours back, am just concentrating on finishing off outstanding builds and have stopped creating anything new because I no longer want to struggle with the poor quality platform with something from scratch, I rebuff any linden overtures and I no longer go to the office hours and I save my disgruntlement for posting comments out on the web on any article on LL that I think I can sink the boot in.

I feel a lot better for it. I'll reassess when the current repositioning exercise is over towards the end of the year.

Congratulations! You've become LL's model customer. One who doesn't have to log in at all and does everything SL on the web. Your prize is in the mail.

LOL! I love that Lexie did not even use her boilerplate .... just pointed to where it was joked about previously.

[edit: psyche! I just saw about the same post earlier in this thread]

I certainly will be when I finally stop giving them money - which will be sooner rather than later I suspect and I've have some nice little successes with various comments. I do like making LL wince. ;)

Sticking inworld does nothing, it enables LL to hide their bad behaviour towards their customers. Part of the deal with being inworld is you need to generate income for them - create and entice people to buy, to shop or to hang around in social areas to make SL look populated .. they get a cut of every lindex transaction, they get to crow about concurrency and user hours, and xsl sales, use the wealth of creations in their marketing, and the many other ways they exploit you just by you being there.

In return they ignore you and your concerns because they know you won't leave. Worst of all, out on the web so many people will jump to LL/SLs defence when an even slightly "degrogatory" comment is published and they stick to the LL provided outlets which enables LL to "manage" them

It's easier to silence the addicts by cutting off their supplier provided outlets than it is to get a paying customer to return.

Hey Chris - its for resident to resident questions, not resident questions to Lindens. Its generally for things like "How do I change my last name in SL?" and "Halp - I can't log in!" Stuff like that.

It is the only place there we are allowed to start threads. So if we cannot contact the Lab there, we are shut out. Face it, they don't care what paying customers think. Also, why shut down resident to resident discussions about Lab policies?

no that was me... so sorry for the confusion, I just find your multiple personalities hard to deal with and you looked like a good target to vent on, since the others wouldn't notice... =P

I have to laugh at Lexie posting, "Thread locked. (For the quoted reasons stated in the above post) Thank you." without seemingly any clue whatsoever at the irony.

I think that was actually Lexie trying to be funny... I'd be more amused though is shed actually read the second quote and done that... then it would've been worth a laugh.

Perhaps. I haven't seen enough of her posts to know. But this is, IMHO, a worse alternative.

Funny. I *only* use the word to describe the body part; I would never use it as an insult, I suppose because it seems derogatory in a gendered way.

It's actually, in my view, a perfectly valid word; it's certainly old enough. If Chaucer can use it, hey, why can't I?

Huh? Gendered? It's a cross gendered insult, it doesn't discriminate on grounds of gender.

It doesn't? Well, I'd never consider calling a male one of those. Plenty other gender specific words for boys.....
