Top Ten Warnings for New Residents

Figured a little restating of some recent topics could not hurt. The more informed newbies we have, the less "I just got robbed" posts will have to be written. And read and responded to.


1) Don't set your land to "Anyone" if you mean to sell or give to a specific person. Even if it looks like you are alone on the sim where you are doing your business, you are not. So take the extra minute to set the land to that specific person.

2) Triple-check the price of land before you set it for sale. Make sure it is the price you want to set it for.

3) Don't give your password out to anyone for any reason.

4) If you set your land to a group, make sure you have at least one other group member. Because if your group dissolves, you will lose your land.

5) Don't set no copy objects for sale for $0. The person you are selling it to may not buy it quickly enough and you could lose it so someone else.

Ok, forum regulars, add your warnings to fill out the list. Maybe we could turn it into a notecard to be given out with the torch on Orientation Island.

6) Don't think LL will help resolve your disputes with other residents.

7) Dont worry when half of your wardrobe gets stuck up your arse

10. Develop a thick skin if you plan on visiting this forum often and stating your opinions.
If you aren't a cutting edge Silicon Head Technophile, you will be deemed by some to be a lesser form of life, worthy only of condescention. (or is it condesation? I always get those 2 confused)

I am a "newbie" and its thanks to these forums that I know what I know now I have learnt so much from spending hours reading here... I know lots about land bots, how awful ad farms are, why I dont want a casino in front of my house and oh so much more

Its thanks to this forum and search that I have a skin and shape I adore and I have a walk that is soooo me lol Without knowing it, you guys have been helping me out for days

13) If you're willing to look logically at what a bot can and can't do, be prepared for the bot hunters to burn you at the stake

14) If you're going to release a Bot into SL that can most readily be used to rip other people off, and has little other redeeming value, prepare to be burned at the stake.

15) Cross-dressing IS enoucraged in Mature areas. If in doubt, just check with Giulianni.

If it seems too good to be true, it probably is, especially where large numbers of L$ are involved. Be careful or be flagged for fraud-related activity by Linden Labs.

That is the reality of these and other SL forums.

A huge amount of very useful information with trolls thrown in for spice.

My number one warning to new players would be a suggestion that they browse forums before they do anything with cost in SL.

16) Be aware that there is no privacy in Second Life, however much you might wish it to be so. You cannot stop camera tricks, you cannot stop scans, you cannot stop an army of determined alts, and if you listen to streaming music or watch videos in-world your IP address can be trivially obtained.

And especially don't rez any objects if you are not sure of their origin.

-Dont rez anything you dont want to show up on someones database somewhere.
-Dont Say anything in voice chat you dont want stangers to hear.
-Dont bother trying to avoid your ex, some bot will track you down for him/her.

16 b) Be aware that your IP address can be trivially obtained if you even have quicktime installed. Clicking the play button is not required.

Edit: correction to the above. If you have quicktime and have not disabled playing of videos altogether. You do not have to click play though to start a movie, they can be started for you even if you are not over the land the command comes from.

Don't use so much bling that you look like an airport runway at midnight. Nothng quite so much announces "newbie" except maybe for some AO where you strike a lame pose every 2 seconds.
