seeing 123(whomever) or XXxxx(whomever)xxxXX etc can be a lack of creative thinking when creating a user first name.

Back in the old world (TSO), XXxxx(whomever)xxxXX was a distinguished family name.

Ohh... you're name isn't in the list. It must be very rare. I'll add it. Check back in 2 days. Awesome name, by the way. :)

I think that's unfair. Some people want to have a specific first name that they relate to, and whereas it used to be the case that, suppose you wanted to be called "Pat", there was always some surname for which that first name would still be available. Now that's no longer the case, and if you are determined to be Pat, you have to be Pat79 or somesuch.

But why? Why did LL break the system, and why haven't they put it back yet? The problem gets worse every day with more new joiners. And furthermore, the damage will be lasting. It's not like a viewer problem where an update to fix a problem eradicates it. For the rest of SL's existence, there will still be this enormous block of residents with a narrow selection of surnames and weird first names, while the older residents (who I suspect are now a minority) are smug in having names like Mary and John rather than MaryXX34 etc.

This is an URGENT problem.

While I am very attached to my name, I do miss the fact that my old account's last name was very limited. Counting in all the accounts that were inactive, and deleted, there was maybe 30 or less of us floating around. In fact, in the entire year I was with that account I saw my last name only once, never again. And never since. I love Broken Xeno, as a name, however I do dislike that there's over a thousand Xeno's in SL, and I've seen about thirty or so of them since making this account.

In a year on SL I have yet to meet another Godwin.

I did see another Conan the other day though. Good stuff.

I really like to know what the answer to the topic of this thread?! Lindens around to answer this?

As many people tell me, Usagi, the Lindens don't even read this forum, let alone answer questions posed in it.

You bring up good points. But LLABs does read teh forums, they just learn about how some habits of posters and then lable them problem people. But to get back to the issue, names use to roll off and then help bring in new and alts of people to help drive population levels even higher. Now look 7+ millions and not llabs no longer needs the helper of new names to bring in new people. There starneg and totally off the wall as you say first names with ge to the point where people will start using last parts of phone numbers etc.Who knows.............

No, there is no new information from LL about this yet. But, when LL finally adds new names to the list, you can be one of the first to know about it. Simply subscribe to my new alert list at http://slnamewatch.com
I have a script that checks the Join Now page periodically. If any names are added, it sends an email to everyone who subscribes.

While you're there, you can see how many avatars have each known SL last name, and you can find out what famous RL people have each last name, where applicable. (Did you know you were named after the master swordsman and author of The Book of Five Rings, Miyamoto Musashi?) Only 59 other avatars share your last name. Congratulations.

OMG, I thought you were being sarcastic.

I am japanese but the sad facts are that person is not as famous as people around the world is lead to believe........frankly who cares.....Usagi has its own personal means then some narrow minded mislead information about a factional person in japanese history. yes there is a university and highschool named after musashi but the writer has some history behind him., But do you know how many japanese swords man there are in japanese history?

Usagi
totally ignores the rest of the BS.

I'm sorry if the research tools on my site insulted you... Honestly I don't know the first thing about Japanese swordsmen, and I hadn't heard of this one until i clicked on the "W" link next to the name yesterday. It seemed kind of interesting to me. My website simply provides links to what wikipedia, etc., say about the name, mainly to help you figure where LL got the idea for the name. It's not supposed to provide an authoritative history of the name ;) . If you feel strongly enough about the inaccuracy, maybe you can edit the Wikipedia entry?

No, people have brought it up, but really names past ones are history. And should stay that way. play retro names is asking for problems if they do it will take the last drop of repectablity and sence of history out of sl......... let the dead stay dead.

No.

Can I unretire a last name? I really like one but it's long-gone!
Sorry, no. Generally speaking, once retired, a last name can't be revived.

Now that the floodgates have opened to the millions of unwashed masses, why would LL care about people being frustrated about having to add numbers to user names? It makes them seem more like AOL and Yahoo and the other big companies.

They are *not* unwashed. In fact, older SL addictees are much less likely to bathe than newby come lateleies...

I think what he said here was llabs uncaring about the changing users names in signup. Hence all LLABs cared about was adding number, and letting them deal with having the first name problems of finding one that is unused. We are now becoming a AOL and YAHOO in that way.

I tend not to talk to people with numbers in their name, unless they are exceptional people who are articulate enough for it to be clear that they have some underlying reason for their apparent silliness. Bilbo for example gives a good account of himself here on the forums, and so clearly doesn't belong lumped in with the rest of the XSJimmy999 brigade - but alas he seems to be a rarity.

<blush>

My alt saw a Frodo the other night ... but by the time I relogged, the little beggar had run off!

Btw my fiancee is a Pat. Thank goodness she went straight for her Starship Titanic name Morgaine :)
