Should a prim limit ever be increased?

I own 1504M of land for myself. I also own three 512M and one 544M plots that I rent out. Having spent many hours building my own skybox and after adding the usual basic furniture I am down form 344 to 242 Prims. All plots are next to my own.
I was going to open the 1504M for my tenants as a private park but I can't really spare those Prims I have left so although they will probably be welcome to visit there won't be as much there from me as I had hoped. I am considering using one of the plots just to up the Prims for the park, it is empty right now so no harm would be done.
Prim Limits are there for a very good reason and although this would not apply to me because I have only owned my land for about a month I had a thought. As an example take a 512M plot with 117 Prims, not a lot but just enough. What are your thoughts if, say the same resident stayed on the same plot for a certain period of time (eg six months) that person be allowed a few more Prims to add to his/her limit. I'm not thinking a lot but especially for those on 512M I know that 117 is hard to get by with. In this example maybe it could increase to 135, as I say not a lot but on a 512M it can be. I a not talking here about commercial plots which attract traffic and slow things down already (I am thinking now of how many prims we wear on a night out so I think businesses already get their increase in a way).
I realise that the strain on the servers would be increased but they do get upgraded and perhaps that could be taken into consideration when preparing for those upgrades. Maybe the increase could be limited to areas which like mine are residential and have a very low Traffic Count. I know some will rave on about the servers are rubbish etc but despite what we think they do get upgraded and a small percentage increase in Prims in some areas is not much of a strain to bear.
Another thought just came to mind. How long has the 117 limit been in place for a 512M plot? I am sure it is not that long ago that those things which people held on their plots were made up of fewer prims as where the things we wear. Maybe it is time for a "global" increase?

Prims are a finite resource inside a sim. Prim limits were a response to lots of very angrified residents who vented their spleens in early forum threads like this. Its only 6 pages long, but it could provide you with a few answers.

I undertstand the need to limit Prims within any area. It sounds the same as "Area is full" as we see from time to time. However if one area with maybe a nightclub and the maximum Avatars all carrying Prims are in that area how does that compare with an area the same size with hardly anyone in it. If I open my Mini Map at a lot of places I see a pile of green dots each one represents a number of prims (clothes, hair, etc) if I open the Mini Map in the area I am thinking of there are perhaps 2 or 3 dots at the most. So, load on the servers in a busy area is very high therefore a low Prim Limit has to be in place but what about those areas which are 95% Residential the homes are using Prims at the same rate as the Clubs but hardly any Avatars means the total Prims for that part of SL is very low compared to the other. Yes there must be a maximum I agree but perhaps for resedential areas that could be increased as I said, not a lot but enough to help out the residents a little. Of course the next thing we must ask is how to define a resedential area? By Covenant I guess. Personally I would have no problem with certain areas being designated by Linden Covenant as Residential then perhaps residents would be willing to pay more money for that land to receive those extra Prims. As I said just a thought that crossed my mind iAndrew Bailey

From: Adz Childs that was sort of interesting. i couldn't get through the whole thing how does it end? It ends with land being sold and limits on prims!! Hurray!

From: iAndrew Bailey I undertstand the need to limit Prims within any area. It sounds the same as "Area is full" as we see from time to time. If you're renting on a private sim where the Object Region Bonus Factor is set higher than 1.0 you'll see this pop up when the sim runs out of prims, even though your own land will show free available prims. Some landlords are using this technique to advertise plots with more prims available than they should, and it only works as long as noone actually tries to use their full "promised" allotment. (Edited to add that a higher than 1.0 isn't a bad thing, it just means that part of the sim has to remain barren/mostly unused for it to work, which in the "scam" obviously isn't the case) PS: rereading your post it isn't clear wether full refers to prims or avies . If you meant "is full" in the sense of not being able to get there then just ignore my post .

I understand the need for prim limits... but as a new player, it seems to me that the limits are a bit too low.
Having only a 512 firstland to build on is frustrating because basically almost anything you make is not going to look very great. Well, you might make a good looking house, but have no prims left for furniture. You might get all the furniture you want (even low prim stuff), but then your house is going to look like crap.
I believe it is not possible to have a good looking building with furniture, UNLESS you make everything with single prim boxes and just apply 3D looking textures, which is what I attempted and it looks bad.
What people ending up having to do is buy more land and not use most of it... just so they can get a "complete" home. I purchased 1024m more land after playing around with my firstland for a few days and realizing the limitations.
I think it would be nice if the limit where upped at least a bit. What would it take to up the limits? Faster CPU's and more RAM on the linden labs sim servers? Is this something that will eventually happen?

First read this /327/c4/166847/1.htmlMy home would fit on a 580M Plot with two storeys yet I own 1504M. Somewhere out there is someone looking for a 512M plot they can afford to buy. I own an extra plot for the Prim Allocation. Because of that land prices are higher. Now I am thinking of adding another 512M of land just so I have more Prims, oops up go land prices again and I get more land with a few trees taking maybe 4 Prims. An increase in Prim Limits giving me another 100 or a bit less might stop me from thinking about about adding that 512M plot to what I already have. Before building the sky house I did think of adding land at no extra charge to the plots of three out of four tenants to give them more Prims too but that idea is no longer practical. I just checked my Avatar he is using 11 Prims (I counted flexi hair as 1 Prim). If I had a club with 10 people in it that is 110 Prims. On my land most of the time it has been me building (that is what I do most of the time) and sometimes my girlfiend which is maybe 22 Prims. Another 50 Prims would be less than a Club but help me a bit. Oh, before anyone starts thinking the I live in a palace here is a pic of the ground floor. Not quite over furnished Upstairs is a rug, bed and fireplace. http://img241.imageshack.us/my.php?image=myhome001qz1.jpg

Let me see if I get this straight, in case I should own my free land one of these day, does the primlimit means that if I rezzed 110 prims on that land I should´t wear my prim hair ótherwise I m not able to get there ? Sorry I´m a complete noob, and somehow I find this all a bit confusing. the maxnr of prims seem to me very little if I think my first selfbuild flowerpot had 7 prims

Attached prims do not count towards the parcel or sim limits, so you can wear your hair. From: someone The formula is:
prim_limit = integer( parcel_area * region_limit / region_area )
Note that the prim_limit must be a "whole number" so the decimal part of the "real number" inside the parentheses is discarded.
That's the formula for figuring out how many prims can be placed on a certain piece of land. region_limit is currently set to 15,000 with region_area set to 65,536 Any attached prims do not count towards the region limit, but they can contribute to lag, since your client is having to render more prims.

Prim limits are purely arbitrary, up to a point.
A new sim has a maximum limit of 15000 prims allocated to it, and as a sim is 256m x 256m, i.e 65536sqm, then a 512sqm plot (if the world was fair) would have 117prims allocated. This is just a guide however, and you could, in theory, have all 15000prims on the one 512sqm plot, and the rest of the sim totally barren.
Prims worn on your person are not counted.
There are ways around the prim limit, the paradise picnic blanket is one excellent way, and zero-prim objects are another.
So, in a nutshell, you can allocate prims to parcels as you see fit, but you must stay under the maximum limit.

You could have all 15,000 prims on a single 512 plot, IF you owned every other plot in the sim as well.
You are allocated prims on a sim by sim basis.

actually i feel the prim limits are quite fine personally, keep in mind SL isn't some recent CGI movie, it's a real time 3D engine, so learn to build better and use your prims more cleverly is the best advice i can tell you, else, buy more land.
We are all under the same roof for this and if some are able to cope with it, well why not you?
Also the "great looking" factor do not depend exactly of the amount of prims in it.

well thanx for the answers. I´m playing since 5 days now, and my head spins a bit. Everything I look at seems to make me have to look at more things( e.g Photoshop and other graphiksoftware, wich again have bloody big tutorials itself) allmost don´t know wich one to start learning first . And I overslept allready, and got late to work. Time passes far to quickly well lets see how I think about SL in about 6 month

I think the problem is that the newest people are the ones living on the smallest lots, and being new, they haven't figured out yet how to maximize their prims. I've done some nice things with smaller lots but I've had a little practice. It takes some time to learn how to twist the prims to get the maximum shape out of them, and to use textures in a way that they don't come out looking like crap. When you're first learning, it's easier to use a separate prim for every little detail and that's where you end up with 7 prim flowerpots and 22 prim tables and whatnot. The new residents on the smaller lots also don't often have the money or the knowledge to know where to buy things that are going to be low-prim, or even how to check the prim count on things before they buy them. I know, I've been there. And a lot of the available freebies are beginners projects which use a lot of prims. I've sorted through loads and loads of those! So those of you with prim limit difficulty have my sympathy - it does get better. I don't think the answer should be to increase prim limits on parcels. You will see in my signature that I do sell household items, but I'm honestly not trying to give a sales pitch here - just trying to help.

The old limit was 10,000 prims per sim. I recall trying to shop in Avatar Central in Natoma 4 years ago. Prim usage was near maximum, and it was practically a slide show.

I think more prims wouldn't be very good at all and just cause even more lag than there is now.

Not exactly what I was intending to talk about but despite the fact that I am 600M up I was just texturing the outside of my house and found a casino a few Metres under my house! Now I know where all of those Prims went!

Andrew You will probably want to set your property options if you haven't already not to allow all residents to rez objects or enter objects on your land, and set autoreturn to on to get rid of the casino. Unfortunately, people looking for a quick buck will sometimes place their stuff anywhere they are allowed to rez objects. It makes for some ugly landscapes when an empty lot is full of hippiepays, slot machines, pyramids and freedom potted plants.

Problem solved. A long story but it came down to having to keep turning off the No Build / People in the Group and not in the Group, a Tenant in the Group. problems with having an Alt Account not being able to share certain things so autoreturn had to be switched off and so on. I have now sold all land for L$1 to one of my Alts by the group and autoreturn etc is now possible at least on my own land and two of the Rentals. All I need to do know is get back that prim i can see but not reach, I'll go sort that now (it's at 600M and cannot reach to edit, easily sorted By the way the Group is small, myself, my Fiancee and a couple of others. It isn't about Land but someone deeded some stuff and not others, being my first land I deeded the lot to the Group and the story goe on lol. Now that only I own the land I can set things as they should be Andrew
