Moderation Policy
Linden Lab provides these forums in the belief that promoting discourse and the sharing of ideas leads to a stronger, better informed community. [...] Any editing or locking of threads will be accompanied by an explanation, to make our moderation decisions as transparent to Residents as possible.
Except threads are now being locked without explanation. For example:

/327/9f/200106/7.html#post1757244

Is this a change in transparency, or merely a clerical oversight?

Didn't want to bump the thread to the main page. I've posted about this in this forum before. It's not a new moderation policy been doing it for at least six months.

Okay, so you say it isn't new. Dare I ask why you decided to change the policy? If by "this forum" you mean "SL ResMod" your policy change can't be found there. Could you provide a pointer or would you prefer that I grovel through your 5000+ posts for an answer?

Malachi, ffs, it's perfectly obvious why that thread was closed...we're lucky it lived as long as it did. My kingdom for a General forum!

And, you know, Strife might be more cheerful in his/her ResMod duties if people didn't insist on regularly poking at him/her with sharp pointy sticks for no real reason. You disagree with some of the moderation? Goody, so do I, but we don't what instructions have been given behind the scenes and a HUGE part of moderation is based on judgment calls. Tomato/tomatoh and all that jazz.

Personally, I find your near constant sniping far more irritating than all of Strife's thread comments and closings combined.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

If you noticed, Mal, Strife went back to provide the explanation. Come on now.

Strife, since your job is to enforce policy, you should scrupulously follow policy in your own actions, even when it has disadvantages such as bumping a thread.

We appreciate what you do here, even if we don't always ... apprecaite what you do here. ;)

No, that's the explanation for his not following policy.

But the reason for closing the thread should be obvious. Strife should have an automated keystroke to close for that reason, since it happens so often.

Yup, too bad there's not a general discussion forum. And too bad that sometimes, answering residents' questions is considered a "general discussion".

What's bumping got to do with it, got to do with it,
What's bumping, but a redundant forum motion?

Lay off the nice cabbit. As Ann says, that thread was obviously general discussion. (And fun, too, and it was big of Strife to let it go on for twelve pages).

I'm quite certain we try poor Strife's patience often enough...I'm not the least of the offenders, either.

I had observed a number of threads closing first and then getting the official why later. It was no big deal.

Interesting, Strife tries my patience, and as a fellow customer should be afforded no more or no less a voice than any one who has chosen to comment upon this thread.

The salient difference, is that he has explict rules describing how he ought conduct himself as a resmod, while we have no fucking idea what the rules are because Strife makes them up as suits him. He's also been recently deeming threads "not appropriate for discussion", adding his discussion and then locking them*. Which is it, discussable or not? Or is it both, consistency be damned.

I admire the defense that people exhibit for Strife in these threads. Contrariwise, I feel quite capable of advocating my point of view on my own.

seeing as I was the one to start the thread and its become the subject of another silly discussion i will say that its pretty obvious why it was closed

I started it in order to start off a community based paper that was loosely based on forum content sorta. So I hummed and hawed how will i get this wierd paper going and decided to post on the forum excepting the thread to last a couple days at most. It lasted months.

I had hoped that after the first edition people who enjoyed it would just send in questions but they didn't so i closed my eyes and preyed as I bumped the thread. It lasted again for a week and we got a few questions

but I'm telling you what I told brenda. The thread has become another subject of controversy this silly stupid thread I started in order to get questions for content for this little tabloid with no ads or anything so i squashed the paper its not fun anymore its become a part of an argument and a fight.

I've pretty much given up on any forum and as usual this subject was dragged from another forum to this one for no other reason then to just make noise. So there you have it a thread for entertainment and for me to garner an little extra content for a paper pretty much made from fiction that i pull outa my head and write stories that revolve around pictures and the "news headlines of the week" got closed on the resident answers forum cause it was just a thread for having fun. Please let it stay as fun.

I was not surprised it was closed in fact i was surprised it lived at long as it did and with all the sour grapes over this please pick another target of controversy. I killed the project this is no longer fun and that is what it was about now its part of an argument and more ammunition over what? a general topic fun thread which is off topic in a resident forum?

You know something? I'm the thread author if there are any complaints they should come from me. I have no complaints the silly thing lasted for months. Had people not raised a fuss i might have created another one in a couple of months called "ask brenda part deux" but guess what? No way in hell am i gonna now because its come under fire

thanks for squeezing what fun that i had out of it and squashing it for me. I give up...

next thing i write will be pure fiction and not involve the community so I can avoid this garbage.

Wilhelm,
I hope you didn't take my post the wrong way. I LOVED your paper, and I loved the long-running "Ask Brenda" forum thread. I'm saddened that you'd discontinue it after such a short time.

Sure, that thread was against the forum rules. But so are tons of others. As for me, I enjoy the banter and the general discussions. I just don't see jumping on Strife when he finally has to step in and end one that's gone south. He's just doing his job, after all.

no it was a general post i just quoted you as validating it sorry. I have no issue with what he did either that's the point if you read what i said. The thread was just entertainment and nothing more from which i took parts and pub inworld as well.

please read what I said people are starting a discussion on resdmod policies on what basicaly was a joke thread and something that was of entertainment value mostly which lived for a long long time

The fun got squashed outa the stupid thing by more complaining over what is a non issue and this thread was used as a subject to take a swipe at a mod so in order to avoid it I have just stopped altogether.

I had the paper half done and enough from that thread to make something of it but after seeing what amounted to a joke being used as cannon fodder to fight with a mod it kinda SUCKS ANY FUN out of it.

It was for fun and what once was fun has become unfun because of people who have nothing better to do then find something anything to take issue with someone they dont really like.

again please read my entire post..

kinda fed up with the people who try to find an issue in everything including a joke thread..

Careful Walker, when I did a parody of that song I got trolled :(.

It's been suggested a number of times that old threads should be locked as is customary on some forums. I took up this policy as it allowed for discussions that were outside the scope of the forum to take place and the die without the worry of necromancy.

When I locked the thread that sparked this thread, I was going through a backlog of about 80 ARs. Anything that was in violation of the guidelines or past the first got locked. Those that were on the first page also got tagged with a reason. In all I think I locked about a dozen threads. Having them all appear on the first page would have been very disruptive.

The thread in question was in violation of three guidelines. Off-topic, Trolling and Private Discussion. Additionally it's existence encourages others to break the rules.
