I just tried something:
Yesterday I went to Burning Life and had two fast crashes. I set the video ram from 512 to 256. The excessive ram usage I was getting before slowed to where I could actually do stuff before it (ram usage) filled up too far. Is anyone else having problems in high-lag places like Burning Life? And could it be related to that graphics setting that apparently has little to do with the actual capacity of the graphics card? (For my system details, see my post 09-13-2007 03:58 AM.)

Linux goes down!!!
10-06-2007 11:07
This version crashes my system... After about 1 minute the screen begins to turn off and then going black, then off and then black again. Mouse is blocked and all I can do is turn off my laptop and reboot... No matter which region I am in...
I have OpenSuse 10.2 on Acer Aspire 5630.

Are you using the NVIDIA driver? If so, what version?

No, I don't use any driver, because all applications I need, also 3d ones, are working correctly without installing them... Also the previous version of SL was working without them...

Before suggesting you actually try the NVIDIA driver, try renaming the /home/<user>.secondlife folder (that takes it out of the loop without actually deleting it), then run sl again to see if something in your configs is messed up and causing failure. Another suggestion is to go through the entries at the top of the secondlife script to see if there's something there that suddenly became incompatible with your video setup.
I looked at the specs for your laptop, but it's unclear as to whether or not your processor is a 64 or 32 bit. I've noticed the 64 bit stuff can be a little funky in places. I'm running an AMD64X2 with a 7300GT using the NVIDIA driver. It works beautifully.

Ok, I tried to check the script as you suggested, and deleted the "#" at this point:
## - Avoids *all* optional OpenGL extensions. This is the safest and least- ## exciting option. Enable this if you experience stability issues, and ## report whether it helps in the Linux Client Alpha Testers forum. export LL_GL_NOEXT=x
now it seems to work correctly. Thank you very much again!

11-04-2007 01:23
I installed it on my new linux System, Athlon64 X2 5200+/2G/Asus EN8600GT 512 Ubuntu Gutsy all options enabled and it blows! No more problems than the normal viewer for now. Much beyond my expectations for an alpha

I just compiled the 1.18.5.x source from SVN, the one with the new search option fully integrated and as soon as i open the search window, movements become very jerky and stuttery, with FPS nervously fluttering around 41. i used the libs provided with the 1.18.4.1 viewer source and my nvidia driver is v.100.14.23. To compile i used gcc-3.4. No further optimizations. Apart from that everything seems to be fine so far.

Lockup Ununtu
11-06-2007 15:03
Not shure if Lockup is the correct term. I am running Ubuntu 7.10 on a Toshiba A105-S4094, it has an Intel 945 graphics adapter using the i810 driver. Previous client worked perfectly. Since I've updated to 1.18.3.5 everything freezes and then my screen eventually goes blank. No drive activity or anything. I rebooted to WinXP and I was able to log in and render a screen. I could edit my character, zoom around within my LOS with the camera and teleport. But the second I try to walk the system halts and goes to a black screen. I'll say again, the previous client(s) worked perfectly in BOTH Ubuntu and WinXP. I cannot log in to take care of any of my business. This is so aggravating! Any help would be appreciated. Email me at billy.sherman@us.army.mil if you can help.
P.S. Same problem with 1.18.4.1 rc as well.

Lookin for advice
11-07-2007 10:29
My most recent habit in SL is flying Vipers in the BSG47 Pacifica area.
Graphics performance is key in doing this right and on the advice of other pilots, I turned down graphics detail, all categories down the the minimum.
Still there are occasional fits and starts and that leads to bouncing off my wingman or worse yet, the "toasters" get my while I'm hung up.
I'm using a Toshiba laptop Pentium M 1.5 GHz with 1.2 GB of RAM. Graphics are still good. Ubuntu Studio 7.10 with the RT kernel
Still, if I'm gonna fly I need a smooth client. When are we planning to go gold here? Should I use a windows box to fly until then? I'm apparently the only Linux based Viper pilot in that sim.
