http://secondlife.com/community/downloads-optional.php

This is for testing purposes. It features a large number of fixes, most of which are outlined at:
http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/08/29/new-update-process-introducing-release-candidate-viewers/

It also includes various behind-the-scenes fixes for Linux with the hope of improving general compatibility. Some of these fixes include re-enabling Shiny by default (except on Intel chipsets), and re-enabling some default graphics optimizations (except on ATI chipsets), for a better out-of-the-box experience (info for advanced troubleshooters: the aim is to make LL_GL_BASICEXT obsolete soon, so please try running without this option and report any stability problems which LL_GL_BASICEXT still solves).

Thanks for testing!

Ok, first and second impressions:
(Fedora7 x86_64, ATI Xpress 1150, 1,5GB, Dell Notebook Latitude 131L AMD64x2 Turion TL-50, testing without LL_GL_BASICEXT, both in Class1 and Class3 effects).

Yesterday I got the first impression that the new client is faster.
Today, I got a few little "hangs" (stutters?) in Surtsey 209,166,10 with the new client, so I compared. The new client seems faster in someplaces but slower with higher picture quality in others.

The new candidate is faster and more realiable when switch screen resolutions and windows<->fullscreen modes.

I noticed the CPU usage at the same exactly location as above, after downloading all textures, without moving:

1.8.3(2) tops 147% CPU, and mostly stays above 100%!

Most recent outputs.... (the new candidate generates more output).

1.8.1(2): tops 99% CPU.

Very little output with nothing relevant.

This version locks my system. OK, this is Linux, and we don't actually lock up, lol, but what it does is consume 100% cpu to the point where the system is virtually unresponsive. Every 30 seconds the mouse would move an inch, I had to power the cycle the box to regain control. I tried it a couple of times. Slackware 12, Kernel 2.6.22.5, Toshiba S173 1415 laptop, celeron 1800, 512MB ram, 80GB HD. GeForce 420 Go.

An older version of the linux client, I forget the version, it's whatever was available a few months ago - worked fine.

Now that I've played with this RC... I'm getting the odd halt of all SL activity for a breif 30 seconds to a minute. I don't know why, and it releases the pause. This happens with 1.18.1 too.

Not so good on this release
09-04-2007 00:56
My graphics quality is considerably less then what I normally get and render is much slower. Not little slower a lot slower. I am working on project using shifting alpha prims. IN the older current official release the transition between the alpha sets are flawless unless under heavy lag. (Got love Lag) Under the test candidate the transition is very very clunky. I've tried under various levels of lag and the results is the same. Render is also very blurry compared to the current official release. Huds that crystal clear in current appear fuzzy in the candidate. The color itself is washed out compared to the current release.

So with my rig, what ever you did to the open GL drivers to make them more out of the box friendly, made them more ugly.. :-(

My rig is as follows Ubuntu Studio 7.04 Fiesty: ASUS nividia chip set,motherboard-amd 64 bit dual core 2.4ghz, XFS 6600 512mb graphics card nivida, 2 gig ram kingston, 300 gig drive.

Truly rendering shouldn't be problem with my machine, and it hasn't been up to the point of the candidate client.

I hope some this info helps you smarter them me softwar guys out.

Take care lots of luck.

I'm currently compiling Rev: 68969 of the client and found out, it needs the ares DNS resolver library. So i wondered what exactly the purpose of this new library in this client is. Is it there to ease load on the server?

More or less. It's being used for cross-platform SRV record fetching - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SRV_record

Hi Tofu,

I tried removing the LL_GL_BASICEXT but then the client got unstable (hardware hangs). With it the version seems 10% slower than 1.18.1.2. However now AGP X4 mode works fine.

very stable for me
09-04-2007 14:36
AMD Sempron 2400+ w- 1GiB DDR1; Nvidia 7600 w- 256MiB;

I get the very occasional 20-30 sec freezes mentioned above and one crash, but that is a VAST improvement and I am very happy.

I have the blacklist commented out (and the other two above it, but I have had them commented since I switched to Nvidia).

Getting consistent 24+ fps in my home parcel on this hardware

Hi Benru - do you feel up to using LL_GL_BLACKLIST to figure out which extension is causing you those stability problems? Thanks.

I got a crash just after a teleport via the "map" selection of a landmark. I had to pkill the process as it hung. Restarting did not give the "Secondlife appeared to have crashed" dialog.

System Information:

Fedora 7 x86_64 (2.6.22.4-65)
glibc 2.6-4
nvidia x86_64 100.14.11

Intel Q6600 (Core 2 Quad @ 2.4Ghz)
4 GB Ram
nVidia GeForce 8600 GT

Let me know if I can provide further information.

EDIT:
Performing the same sequence of teleporting did not cause it to crash a second time, as of yet.

I just tried to compile the Rev: 69255 client and ran into a

cannot pass objects of non-POD type

error at line 460 i believe, when the compileprocess reached the llstatusbar.cpp file

Here's the complete error:

/tmp/asriazh/home/asriazh/Secondlife2/source/SVN/maint-ui/indra/i686-linux-client-releasefordownload/newview/llstatusbar.cpp: In member function `virtual void LLStatusBar::refresh()':

I got rid of the error by changing lines 464-470 of llstatusbar.cpp to this:

if (parcel && !parcel->getName().empty())
{
location_name = region->getName()
+ llformat(" %d, %d, %d (%s) - %s",
pos_x, pos_y, pos_z,
region->getSimAccessString(),
parcel->getName().empty());

^_^ yay!

Edit:

Next error was at llviewermenu.cpp. line 5891-5893 should be:

LLFloaterScriptQueue* mQueue;
BOOL scripted;
BOOL modifiable;

Next edit:

Done compiling and it runs fine ^_^
I didnt have any time to test the new client tho. I'm compiling a version with optimized cflags, now that i know that everything works as it should.

beta is ssssllllllllloooooooooowwwwwwwww
09-07-2007 06:03
Unfortunately it seems the beta eats up the resources for me without doing anything useful.

I run the special SL-knoppix on a 1.6 GHz P4 with 756 Mb ram and an old GeForce 4 card, nothing else is in that computer, it's dedicated for SL (yes i know it isn't the fastest one!)

To summarize it short:
Most stable versions, with exception for the ones with the old debug-library problem, is working fine, loads up in some 10 seconds and give a playable environment though some crowded places will have low FPS.
The beta consumes huge amounts of resources, and takes forever, well at least almost a full minute, to display the login screen. That was when my patience wasn't enough for more waiting...

So, still using 1.18.0.6, with the usable user interface :-)

I just tried the rev 69255 for a bit longer and the client couldn't read about land->general->name and descrition and also about land ->media->media URLs. And because of that, theres no radiostream available, of course.

Now that I've played with this RC... I'm getting the odd halt of all SL activity for a breif 30 seconds to a minute. I don't know why, and it releases the pause. This happens with 1.18.1 too.

I'm getting the same problem. I have an applet running in the taskbar that monitors cpu, memory and swap. I notice that, in the memory, the blue ("used";) is huge when sl locks up. Also, it seems to happen more near those massive ad farms in Green Ray.

Side note: if you want to see a region going bad, go to Green Ray. It has become the nastiest-looking place I've ever seen.

I need to test the latest Kubuntu on a similar system to see if that will serve as a replacement for SL Knoppix. They already bundle NVidia's drivers, and planning on bundling ATI's drivers.

Wow! Release Candidate 1.18.3.4 is now up
09-14-2007 15:02
LOL, I just downloaded 1.18.3.3, and on the first startup it told me there is 1.18.3.4 now.

THAT's a speedy cycle, for sure ;-)

1.18.3.4 RC is the first for me that exits without getting the "corrupted double-linked list" message.
Hoping this means less memory suckage & better stability. Lately the grid has seemed wonkier than my client, though, so it's hard to evaluate.

1.18.3.4 is working good for me now on my ubuntu system though the texture loading is slower than previous releases.

I just noticed that the latest SVN release version (70161) uses Ares. Does that mean we will see a server upgrade soon? Cause right now, when i try to connect with an Ares client version, the client crashes as soon as it tries to communicate with the server.

-Asriazh

Edit:
Oh, btw.. SL uses c-ares, not ares. thats why my builds crashed at login. Now they work perfectly ^_^
