LL requires a LOT of thing to run their software, I'm not too happy either... thing won't even run on my system thanks to my ATI card

Hmmm I guess I must think myself lucky as I am 2 out of 2 on running SL on Linux machines [have never ran it on Windows actually]
1 ATI and the other, my main machine Nvidia. I was indeed surprised that it ran without any problems on the ATI based system, thought it was just well designed software.... maybe not though. |

Well, I guess I will just run SL on a windows machine, because I am not comprimising my systems security measures just so I can play a game. If LL can't make a program that doesn't require me to modity MY software to operate it... well.. there's issues, at their end. Well... Linux is many times more secure than WIndows even without SELinux. Noone that I know actually uses it, as it puts lots of limitations on what can be done as a user (or even as root IIRC) without lots of extra configuration. Running windows is _much_ more insecure!!! It is not LL's fault. No one could write software to bypass SELinux policy.. That is the whole point it is SECURITY+++++++++. Your SELinux policy is _your_ policy that _you_ are running on _your_ box, and _you_ have the responsiblity to configure it properly! SELinux is probably worth it if you have a lot of very sensitive info on the box and it _has_ to be connected to the internet or have multiple-user access on a LAN (think company secrets, MI5, CIA etc.), or if you are very paranoid or just interested in how security works (tin hat brigade).. Although most people with sensitive information seem to run Windows boxes or unpatched Linux servers from RedHat 5 days (with lots of buffer-overflow problems)! Other things like running a correctly configured firewall, not running as root for day to day tasks, not running services you are not needing (ssh or telnet access, web server, ftp server etc), not using guessable passwords and keeping your system patched are much more important to security. Anyway, the bottom line is: SELinux is not very commonly used, and I would not recommend using it as a newbie. Maybe after you have got used to all the security features of standard Linux, you can activate SELinux and see if you can configure it correctly! By the way, with respect to "what is SELinux?", Google is your friend: http://www.nsa.gov/selinux/ http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/selinux-faq/ Lastly, I have been using Linux since 1998 and I see no need to install SELinux on any of my boxen (just yet). |
