I'm a Linux noob. How do I run this?

1. Go here: http://stux.wikiinfo.org/moin.py/LinuxClient
2. Download slutils-0.3.tar.bz2
3. Open a terminal and change to the directory you downloaded that file.
4. Run "tar -xvjf slutils-0.3.tar.bz2" (that's without the quotes, of course)
5. change to the newly created slutiles-0.3 directory.
6. follow the instructions in the README file, then
7. run slupdate, then sl

Hope this helps... for a poorly written intro to the command line, see my website:
http://silenceisdefeat.org/~darkside/dstech/index.php?cat=linux_tutorials&page=command_line_basics

or google for one, which will probably be written better :)

Hmmm, this is where Zonax's installer was better. Download a single uncomressed perl script, chmod, run.

Hmmm I would stsill say, the easyers way is go to http://secondlife.com/community/linux-alpha.php
download the file to a nice locations (~/Games/ or something)
tar xjf SecondLife_1_10_2_2.tar.bz2
cd SecondLife_1_10_2_2
./secondlife

Maybe it's just me, but I never was a fan of scripts that aren't really needed.

I'm a noob as well and tried that:
maverynthia@arctic:~/SecondLife_1_10_3_3$ ./secondlife
bin/secondlife-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libdb-4.2.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or direct

Now what? Also SLUtils isn't available for download on that page...at least I didn't find it..

You might need to run:
ln -s /usr/lib/libdb-4.3.so ./lib/libdb-4.2.so
inside the SL directory. It's linked to a older version :P
Edit: Why did I think it was in /var? Jeebus only knows....

You need to install libdb-4.2, or if not available for your distro, then install libdb-4.3 and make a symbolic link to it in your local second life lib directory, named to look like libdb-4.2 (as recommended in the post above).

I had no problem launching at home on my Kubuntu Dapper box, but here at work errr somewhere else :) I had this error. I found /usr/lib/ had libdb-4.1.so and libdb-4.3.so but no 4.2

So I symlinked 4.2 to the existing 4.3 and voila!

Oh, this is on a SuSe 10.0 box.

This is what I get, after doing what was recommended above.

bin/secondlife-bin: error while loading shared libraries: lib/libfreetype.so.6: cannot restore segment prot after reloc: Permission denied

Any ideas?

CrossOver

You can get CrossOver Office and then install the windows client.
I will be doing that until the linux client is more stable.

The more people usea non-native client, the LESS bug reports and attantion LL will give us.
BTW: I've had NO client problems since 1.10.3.3

Here neither, if we leave out the already known issues (like no sound, missing key-repeat, etc)

So I take it that I'm screwed if I want to play SL on my new installation of Fedora.

Yay.

This might not be it, but give us the output from

CODE

ls -l lib/libfreetype.so.6

Ran from within the SecondLife folder.

What I did, was the linking of the binary previously mentioned.. That was what the lastrun.log was complaining about first. Now, the cut-paste that I posted up is my new error with SL.

Now, this is what I have from the LS command you asked for.

[Pace@localhost SecondLife_1_10_3_4]$ ls -l lib/libfreetype.so.6
-rwxrwxrwx 1 Pace Pace 1432425 Jun 15 13:03 lib/libfreetype.so.6
[Pace@localhost SecondLife_1_10_3_4]$

It is a problem with SELinux. As a quick fix: disable SElinux by editing the /etc/selinux/config file and commenting out all lines. Then add this line to the file: SELINUX=disabled. Reboot, and SL should work.

I don't know anything about configuring SElinux as I don't have it installed, but the above fix should work.

Well that shows there is no perms error ... hmm

Try Theora's fix, sound feasible.

What is SELinux? Even after SU'ing I can't save the file.. looks like I have to do that as root.

Secure Linux Kernel

A bit of overkill for a Desktop IMO

try uname -a comand see if that tells you have an SE Kernel or not. It might help.

Well, I guess I will just run SL on a windows machine, because I am not comprimising my systems security measures just so I can play a game. If LL can't make a program that doesn't require me to modity MY software to operate it... well.. there's issues, at their end.
