I'm running Ubuntu 6.06, just recently updated everything and have the lib4.3 fix installed, but with the latest release I once again cannot get the game to run. Here's the log file from recent:

2006-07-12T22:43:12Z This can be because you somehow have multiple copies running, or your system incorrectly thinks a file is open. If this message persists, restart your computer and try again. If it continues to persist, you may need to completely uninstall Second Life and reinstall it.

Any help would be appreciated :) Thanks

First question, did you extract using tar?

on another note that message should read.
"This can be because you somehow have multiple copies running, or your system incorrectly thinks a file is open, or the file does not exist due to your extraction utility. If this message persists, restart your computer and try again. If it continues to persist, you may need to completely uninstall Second Life and reinstall/extract it. This software should be smart enough to create folders that it needs, but it is not."

I tried to use tar, but had the wrong pathway for it apparently. I'm still new to using Linux/Ubuntu *recently converted user from Windows*, so I don't know exactly how to use tar unless I'm given the exact code lines to unpack/install things

EDIT: Also, I seen no sort of installation thing to want to make it update to the new version. The new version just downloaded from the page and tried to run the new download.

Hi, the command for running tar to unpack the tar bzipped Second Life file would be:

tar -jxvf SecondLife_1_10_6_0.tar.bz2

make sure you are extracting it from within a directory from where you want Second Life to reside. Maybe you have a secondlife folder/directory in your home directory as an example, then move the Second Life tar bzipped file to that folder then go into that folder and execute the command listed above. Hope this helps you to properly extract everything.

Edit, sorry gave the wrong switches for the tar command at first, my bad, since corrected it

tar: SecondLife_1_10_6_0.tar.bz2: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

it's there, right on the desktop, but won't extract/install

Wrote instructions but looks like I took to long as someone beat me to it.
Make sure your in the same directory the file is.
type
CODE
ls
to list the files, you should see the "SecondLife_1_10_6_0.tar.bz2" file listed.

If its on your desktop you can "probably" get to your desktop in the terminal by typing the following.
CODE
cd ~/Desktop

First you need to change into your Desktop's folder (probably named "Desktop" in your home directory). So open a console window and issue a command similar to this:

cd Desktop

You should now see the new path in front of the cursor. Now unpack the tar archive. Be sure *not* to use the "z" option as suggested before, because "z" will only unpack ".gz" archives. Second Life comes in a ".bz2" archive, so you need the "j" option:

tar -xjvf SecondLife_1_10_6_0.tar.bz2

This will create a folder with the name and version of the client on your Desktop. Now change into this directory like this:

cd SecondLife_1_10_6_0

If all went well, you should now be able to start the client by typing:

./secondlife

Have fun and good luck!

This makes me curious because it always works correctly for my simply by typing tar -xf filename.

Does tar work somehow differently on different distros?

Heh,

I just had always learned to extract a bzipped tar file using the -jxvf switches and a gzipped tar file with the -zxvf switches, but I will try to use your -xf switches next time. Hey if it works, less typing for me :D

Sometimes... also, after testing a few different ways of untaring SL I have found that for Fedora Core 5 and Ubuntu 6.06 that the right click and 'extract here' option always works properly: at least it always has so far.

You can kill them at the command line or in the task/process viewer. Kill -9 <sig> should do it, if you have the kill icon on your pannel that will also work. It's not very clean to kill that way, often if the terminal that spawned SL.

Sometimes you can open a console window, run the command ps ax then look at the output, and you should see something resembling the name of the Second Life program running. To the left there are numbers which correspond to the process id , so you can try doing a kill 02545 for example where 02545 would be the process number, if kill doesn't work, try adding a -9 switch, so kill -9 02545 for example.

Other than that, try exiting X (the graphical program running your desktop) which will take you back to a console window where you can then run startx to get back to the graphical desktop. Make sure you save any work you are doing on the desktop before closing out X. Most major desktop programs like KDE or GNOME you can right-click in an empty area of the desktop and can find on the menu a choice to log out of your current desktop session. Hope these may help.

Edit: Well someone made the recommendation before I got this all typed up. Left for posterity sake :D

Possibly, when SL is started from a terminal it will give a lot of messages. Typically the error is the last line, but to get the jyst of it try copying the the last 15 or so lines of output here and someone can probably help figure out the proiblem.

Nope, appears that Mesa which is an implementation of opengl is installed. You will need to install your vendor specific graphics driver. Appears to be Intel based graphics, is it embeded or a PCI/AGP card?

Try deleting your secondlife cache and the marker file (logs/SecondLife.exec_marker) found in the SecondLife directory.

it's an inbedded chipset, intel 915. They don't have any linux drivers for it on the website. it's also on a dell, and I know in the past it's only wanted to install ones from dell.com

Integrated chips are sometimes harder to deal with. I am unsure how well SL runs with Mesa, I myself never ran it under it and find it to be a slow implementation. Typically takes a good dedicated graphics card to run SL well.

the deleting of cache/exec_marker worked or me, as well as running it in terminal. I may have to kill -9 <sig> it once or twice, but it's working

I'm not sure what you mean by cache/exec_marker. In my SecondLife/cache I have two files, data.db2.x.[some numbers] and index.db2.x.[the same numbers]. I deleted them both just for kicks and the only difference in the log file appears to be in mentions of the vfx index file:

marker file is Secondlife<version#>/SecondLife/logs/SecondLife.exec_marker
