Hello Everybody! I also use the Firstlook Viewer; mainly because of its performance. BUT ->I hate that my Computer crashes after a few hours of SL-ing. Major PC-Crash. ->And I hate, that the FirstLook uses most of the time 85-95 % of my Processor power. ->I also hate that this high performance-usage freezes my LAptop. I mean, my Taskbar f.e. doesn't respond anymore after a while. I have a good Computer; Games like Oblivion or Spellforce run perfectly smooth with med-high Graphics-details. Graphic: Geforce 6800 Go 256MB RAM: 2048 MB Processor: 2.0 Ghz Intel Pentium Mobile (comparable to a Desktop processor with 3Ghz.) Is there anything I could do to increase performance? Greetings Saskia

Check that you have the latest drivers. Another thing is, try reducing the graphic memory for SL to 128 Mbyte instead of using the full 256 MB. Which Linux are you using? That might also play a part... That SL will try to use 100% of your CPU is normal - SL was designed to do that, and it doesn't mean very much. There ARE tricks to reduce the CPU usage, but they make SL much slower. Welcome to the First Look Linux Alpha Testers! The water is deep here, but you can swim properly... hehehe I have a friend who is on SL with a laptop in Windows - it also locks up It may be that the computer or graphic card gets too warm with SL, laptops can have that problem, but I don't have one, so I can't really say.

*claps her forehead.. shaking it.. laughing at herself* Gosh, people! I posted into the wrong thread! I am not using the Linuxalpha version.. *grins* My Laptop runs with Win XP... lol But, I think You are right. I will update Graphics drivers and I think I will find a way to optimize the card cooling. I already thought that this might be a major reason.. Thank You anyways for helping me! Byebye Saskia

Transparency problem
03-08-2007 19:11
I downloaded and ran the firstlook viewer tonight. Performance is greatly improved, but there was a significant graphics problem. I have dragon wings and the membranes of the wings turned semi-transparent above some objects, or opaque above others. I was standing in a room with a tiled floor and I could actually move my AV so that I could see one tile through my wing membrane (the membrane remained visible over the tile and I could see through the membrane as if it was set at about 10% opacity) while the membrane appeared 100% opaque over the tile right next to it. I couldn't figure out why some tiles made it transparent and others did not - all tiles looked the same without the membrane over them.

This is the well known and (un)loved Alpha Bug Is it really gone in the normal viewer? That would be SO great, cos it would then disappear in First Look (I presume) when it gets merged with the main client!

Thanks for testing. First Look is now rolled into the 'preview' viewer in preparation for becoming the preferred client. Testers are welcome to try the preview as per: http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/03/08/preview-of-second-life-11346-up-on-the-beta-test-grid/

Tofu, Firstlook 1.13.3.58877 runs great for me at about ~15fps @ 1280x1024x60 with draw distance 128, VRAM set to 128MB, fog ratio 10.0, and all other options enabled and sliders maxed.... and oh yeah, that's while running two SETI@Home/BOINC jobs in the background!
Only glitch noticed is that it is extremely hard to pick places to sit. Its hard to describe but any place I click to sit, my avatar begins sending effects particles somewhere other than where I click. If I choose sit from the pie menu, I am told there is no place to sit. I have to keep changing where I am facing, standing, and clicking the same sit point until I find a combination where the effects particles actually point to the place I want to sit. Then a sit menu choice will work.
