There is a plug-in module for PulseAudio that is supposed to replace esound. It does not work. For voice in SL, you still need esound.

The first thing to do is make sure it is installed. I see you're using Ubuntu. Here is a link to documentation regarding installing software and using repositories:

https://help.ubuntu.com/7.10/add-applications/C/index.html

Search for "esound," "esd" and/or Enlightenment Sound Daemon.

You should be able to tell through Synaptic (Ubuntu 7.10 software manager) whether or not you have this installed, and install it if it is not.

Next, make sure it is running. Find the System Menu (probably in the Gnome button menu somewhere) and find the service manager. When you've found it, esound, esd or enlightenment sound daemon will be in the list with a notation as to whether or not it is active and running. If it is not, start it and save the service configuration.

The main documentation for your version of Ubuntu is here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/7.10/

Has anyone looked at libjingle from googletalk for linux voice support?

This is the first I've heard of libjingle. I can't tell from my quick, cursory look at it what it would replace or how. Do you know more about it?

If only it were as quick/simple as the gstreamer drop in that has been done. However vivox voice won't work, but at least linux users with no voice could talk among others, also allowing voice/messaging and such. Though, it's just a rough idea so far, I haven't even looked at the docs on it more than a few minutes.

Well, people are already doing that with Skype. If someone fixed up a way to hook this up to Vivox, that might eliminate the need to use esound and pulseaudio to make voice work.

I downloaded the latest version of SL and installed that, now the voice chat is working, sort of, except that so far my microphone is not working with SL. I can hear what I speak into the mic in the PC speakers, but SL is not picking it up.

This is exactly what I am finding.

Works much better on Mandriva 2008.1 with Pulse than previously.
