Hi folks, here's an update on Voice support for the Linux Client. The good news is that we now have full Voice support starting to limp along for Linux internally. No estimate on any release dates, but I expect to push an alpha version of this into a release for testing as soon as it hits a basic level of stability. There is no bad news. Unless you don't want voice support. Thanks for your continued patience.

Even if I think that voice in SL is a very bad idea, please, Tofu, accept my deepest thanks for keeping us updated on linux development news. I think it's safe to say that if linux users have a noteworthy toy to play with, a good share of the merit goes to you.
THANK YOU.

So, what will Second Life NEW motd be? "Speak-up! Second Life is now SUPER fully voice enabled".
Yes. I am STILL pissed off.

I, for one, am anxious to try it out.
Tofu, I notice you saying you want to put out an "alpha" release of voice soon. When is the Linux client going to beta? (given that the Linux client itself is still alpha)

SL is a virtual world where fantasy is the key. Introducing RL elements in it just ruins the fun for me (and all the true role-players). 'nuff said.

Henri -- so don't use Voice No requirement to use it. You can disable it in the client. Me, I'm really looking forward to having the Voice option from Linux!

Hi,
My understanding of technical english is far from good or even average, so I've a simple question: Does voice works in SL client for Linux ?
Many people are using voice chat, but i can't hear them talking. I see in chat history that some 'words' are missing, so i guess those words were spoken instead of being written down.. Beyond the fact of agreeing or not with voice in SL, it's raising a problem for communicating with other residents.
Is there some workaround for this or I just have to wait and see ?

You'll have to wait for a while....

Hello Zhorglub Hienrichs, You have to wait for a while, as Voice isn't in the latest SL client. Tofu Linden tells us in the post above that Linden are currently testing what will be the Linux voice SL client, at the moment - so we can expect some good news shortly - I hope

THANK YOU! but hurry up!

Hi Tofu, Thank you for the update... I await with baited breath for Voice in linux - the reason being is that the client for linux runs twice the framerate as my windows boot (dual boot) If it gets leaked in the meantime... I *promise* not to tell anyone Kind regards Norf.

All wired up and no-where to go

Finally dug out my old PC mic and gerry-rigged in a cheapie voice transformer (makes me sound like a duck, but since it is for my companion object: http://members.optusnet.com.au/~laemi/dolly.html that is quite appropriate Progress report on Linux voice? Dolly wants to know!!!

An update would be cool of progress - I have a new Motherboard coming on Friday that'll allow me to get linux running on a P4 3Ghz and an Nvidia 7600GT with 1.5Gb memory - just for linux. Voice in LINSL (Tm! ) would be so cool instead of reverting back to Windows for the social side of SL. (at the moment I use the Linux client for building, texturing etc because of the Frame rate increase over the windows client - sometimes upto double the frame rates!) Kind Regards Norf

I thought WoW was voice-integrated now or very soon
09-13-2007 01:01
You could look into a voice transformer, either in software or hardware - the ones within a reasonable price-range are not altogether realistic, but would be fine for taking the fantasy-jarring edge off. If you are trying to kid people you are a half-wolf in RL, that might not be so useful ;-P Technically, It is a lot easier to convert a female voice to male than vice versa - something to do with the frequency shift, which is more complex than a simple speed-up (which makes for a chip-munk-ish sound*) My brother's band's base guitarist has an effects unit that can do quite impressive voice-pitch-shifting but those start at about $300 and the price goes up sharply from there. *A chipmunkish sound from a maxed-out $20 unit suits my companion creature perfectly, though

voice update
09-17-2007 14:14
A few of the classes I like to attend are going Voice. Which is really a great thing. I am long past the point of dual booting again. I understand some valid concerns others have made in regards to RP,AGE,Disability etc.. I hope that the ability to turn off voice in certain areas will help alleviate those concerns for you..
For myself, I am eagerly awaiting a NEW linux voice client!!

Grt JOB TOFU I have land in Furnation, and I'm able to turn off the voice in that area of land. When Voice comes, and it's stable, I'll switch it on.
