Testing it out myself, clean install...

So far so good. Plus the new options help pinpoint that ALSA is broken, but ESD and OSS output is not. Glad I installed ESound.

I'll have to wait to see if shiny is working, as the Aditi grid just went down.

No go... lots of bugs still remain:

1.) Proxy settings are ignored/wiped out

2.) Upon launching, it claims that there is a new version that must be downloaded, and clicking "Download" or "Quit" exits SL

3.) Window/fullscreen toggle still broken: You have to check the box, then uncheck it to enable the dropdown, select the window size, then check the box again to "lock" it and use it

There were a few more, but since I can't log into the grid at all with this client, I can only play with the existing UI bugs (also present in the .13 version).

No go... lots of bugs still remain:

1.) Proxy settings are ignored/wiped out. You can enable a proxy, and put in the proxy information, but it is wiped out when you close prefs and re-open them (even without exiting the SL client).

2.) Upon launching, it claims that there is a new version that must be downloaded, and clicking "Download" or "Quit" exits SL when using --grid or --aditi

3.) Window/fullscreen toggle still broken: You have to check the box, then uncheck it to enable the dropdown, select the window size, then check the box again to "lock" it and use it.

4.) The bugs with SL's interaction with the ATI driver are still present in this version. They weren't in .9, appeared again in .13, and are also in this version. Hundred of thousands of these, dragging the interface to a crawl, until it finally grinds to a halt:

fglX11AllocateManagedSurface: __FGLTexMgrAllocMem failed!!
fglX11AllocateManagedSurface: __FGLTexMgrAllocMem failed!!
fglX11AllocateManagedSurface: __FGLTexMgrAllocMem failed!!

Yes, these are SL bugs, not driver bugs (Google for it)

There were a few more, but since I can't log into the grid at all with this client, I can only play with the existing UI bugs (also present in the .13 version).

Did you envoke it with the --aditi (two dashes) option? It's a requirement. I just opened it up in a new folder called SecondLife-Preview and edited the secondlife script to include --aditi in there, plus disable ALSA and OSS so it runs ESD.

Didn't see any of these using ATI's fglrx driver.

Logged into --aditi with 1.12.2, using ATI fglrx driver. No problems with Shiny, pointlights, ect.. All the graphics appear to work, though I didn't test Ripple. No deadlocking issues after disabling the locked-userpages.

Framerates where good, even in loaded areas with lots of prims I maintained near 20FPS.

Appeared to be server problems though, searches would randomly hang for long periods of time, unable to toggle groups. Appeared to be some sort of slowdown related to the asset server, they did end up shutting down the Preview grid for an update. Number of other people there where experiencing the same issues, I don't it had anything to do with the video driver.

Anyway, when Googling for the issue, the only thing I ran accross that looked interesting was in the Rage3D forum saying that this is usually a result of not having a /dev/shm mounted, and is believed to be covered in the ATI docs.

The actual quote from the Rage3D forums is:
From: someone
Have you read the release notes for the driver? I believe what you want is decribed in there (hint: you need /dev/shm mounted for shared memory).

The latest glibc (since 2.1 I belive) requires mounting /dev/shm (Shared memory pool), so it's not just Redhat.

I love how you renamed "secondlife-bin" and added those comments to the script :) Even placeholder files for empty folders are there, you are a genius, Tofu :)

I'll run the preview now, see how it behaves :)

Still hard lockup on startup
10-10-2006 12:47
Still getting the same hard lockups of X when I start this version unless I use export LL_GL_NOEXT=x

glxinfo output:

server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.2
client glx vendor string: ATI
client glx version string: 1.3
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: MEDION RADEON X740XL Generic
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6011 (8.28.8)

[Edit]
I've now put Option "KernelModuleParm" "locked-userpages=0" into my X config as suggested by Major Senior and that has resolved the problem, I can now turn on everything, even commenting out "export LL_GL_BASICEXT=x" and it looks fantastic

Many thanks Major, I bow before your guru-like knowledge of X :)

Great work Tofu, this version is looking really great and runs at a fair old clip

Well, what can I say ... I took out all debug options, then started the client. It works out of the (tar)ball, runs like a charm, even audio works without any special treatment (like aoss). The Bump + Cloth option that caused a crash before works great now.

All in all: Success!

server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation

client glx version string: 1.4

OpenGL renderer string: GeForce FX 5700 Ultra/AGP/SSE2

Same as Zi here, except that Bump & Cloth still crashes my SL. Card etc details in my signature. I re-enabled all LL_GL features, otherwise the buttons are greyed out.

Something I'm seeing on this version and 1.12.1.13 that I've not noticed before nor on the Windows version is a significant FPS drop when high detail for the terrain is turned on. Standing in the Morris sandbox I get about 30FPS with low detail, 20FPS with high detail.

Could this be related to the changes in how the terrain is rendered in 1.12.1.13 as it didn't seem to incur a penalty in 1.12.1.9

Seems to work so far.

Found one bug, present both in the current Linux version and the preview: Text can be selected in a group notice, but can't be copied.

Login problems.

I'm new to this program (not new to Linux). I created an account online, but the client won't let me login. I downloaded SecondLife_i686_1_12_2_6. Running without options tells me to get SecondLife_i686_1_12_2_7 or quit, either button kills the program. With the --aditi option, I get the following error:

2006-10-11T06:07:26Z INFO: Exiting main_loop

(there's more to the log, but I thought this was the relevant info).

I also tried SecondLife_i686_1_12_1_13, but got the "undefined symbol: glXGetProcAddress" error.

My system info:

P4 3.06EE
1024M memory
Gig lan
nVidia FX 5600 (driver 1.0.7676 as recommended by nVidia)
Mandriva 2006

I'll try again tomorrow on my laptop with Mandriva 2007. I would like to get online, though. May also try the windows version in Cedega or wine.

(BTW: My capslock was off)

It COULD be that your account is newer than the data migrated from the main grid.

I am not sure what the cutoff date for THIS preview is, but it is certainly somwhere in the past - maybe 3 weeks ago? With luck, a bit less.

But its not the same User Database as the main grid has, as far as I know.

Hi Hinkley!
If I remember correctly, high-detail terrain rendering was temporarily broken in 1.12.1.9 - later versions render it correctly (using multiple layers of textures for different altitudes) which takes more time.

Hi Gruemaster, thanks for the report. Your account is a few weeks too recent to exist in the preview-grid database snapshot - but hopefully today's main-grid release will make this preview version obsolete anyway.

Crud.

Using LL_GL_BASICEXT=x causes X to crash. I get a couple of frames drawn, move my mouse, and boom, X falls over. X then tries to respawn, but it never succeeds - I get the mouse cursor "hourglass" type icon, then a black screen, then the hourglass, forever. Can't Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get to a tty, but ctrl-alt-del works after I hit it a bunch.

Using LL_GL_NOEXT=x, things seem to work, if they're a bit slow.

Using Ubuntu Dapper, current release and updates. Hardware is an IBM X60 Thinkpad with Intel Integrated Graphics (965 I believe). Core Duo 1.83Ghz, 1GB RAM. I can't capture any errors in the X logs, but here's glxinfo:

Still need export LL_GL_NOEXT=x

I still need export LL_GL_NOEXT=x turned on for my Ubuntu setup, too. It doesn't seem slow to me, though.

Edit:
Based on this but for XGL (https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=191839), I did this:

aticonfig --locked-userpages=off

And now I don't need LL_GL_NOEXT=x

Glad that worked for you, EZ Martin. Unfortunately, I'm on an Intel chipset, not an ATI, so I doubt that'd work for me.

Is it just me, or does ripple water not work anymore? Either way, I miss it already ;.;

Ok, logging in now.

I also downloadded 1.12.2.7, much better. Except it crashed on me once when trying to enter. If I select streaming audio, it crashes. Of course, now I can't reproduce the error, but as soon as I do, I'll post it.

As to this alsa bug, what is the problem? I haven't seen anything here yet. Is the bug reproducable on newer alsa-lib versions?

Yes. Best work around is to disable it and OSS and shove the audio through ESD/Esound.

Did you look into the startup script ./secondlife for debug variables? Try commenting out all debug variables and then start SL again.

I think ripple water uses an unsafe extention, and thus gets disabled from the basic extentions SL uses.
