Playing Quicktime movies never worked for Linux users , coz linux users ofc are the greatest threat to the RIAA and all those crap organisations. It has always been safer for legit companies like LL to exclude Linux users from services like this , so Windows or Mac users can feely and safely use codecs as supplied by 'da industry' ...

For me streaming audio/video works fine with gstreamer and Mandriva 2008. The command urpmi is useful for to install necessary files.
From plf.zarb.org a list of good sources (repositories) can be installed. Recently I have found out how to stream youtube-videos in SL. The flv-films has first to be converted with ffmpeg2 to either mov or mp4. Then the streaming works well. With a suitable computer the converting is done within few seconds. |

Jinx, can you supply more log please? Ideally from the first mention of gst/gstreamer onwards. okok, sorry it took so long to respond. I used Windows to find a working stream. Then tried to view the same stream within linux. When I first started up (without pushing the play button at the bottom) this is what I got: 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: Found DSO: libgstreamer-0.10.so.0 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_init_check from 0xa4b716e0 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_message_get_type from 0xa4b974c0 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_message_type_get_name from 0xa4b97410 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_message_parse_error from 0xa4b97790 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_message_parse_warning from 0xa4b97670 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_message_parse_state_changed from 0xa4b97b80 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_element_set_state from 0xa4b86580 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_object_unref from 0xa4b72680 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_object_get_type from 0xa4b72930 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_pipeline_get_type from 0xa4ba5680 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_pipeline_get_bus from 0xa4ba5610 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_bus_add_watch from 0xa4b7d590 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_element_factory_make from 0xa4b8cb90 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_element_get_type from 0xa4b861e0 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_static_pad_template_get from 0xa4ba4cf0 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_element_class_add_pad_template from 0xa4b88730 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_element_class_set_details from 0xa4b88680 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_caps_unref from 0xa4b7fa30 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_caps_ref from 0xa4b7f2d0 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: _gst_debug_register_funcptr from 0xa4b93d10 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: _gst_debug_category_new from 0xa4b95360 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_caps_is_empty from 0xa4b7f470 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_caps_from_string from 0xa4b80c90 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_caps_replace from 0xa4b7fbe0 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_caps_get_structure from 0xa4b7f560 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_caps_copy from 0xa4b80de0 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_caps_intersect from 0xa4b81420 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_element_register from 0xa4b8c670 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: _gst_plugin_register_static from 0xa4ba8f40 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_structure_get_int from 0xa4bb1b40 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_structure_get_value from 0xa4bb0b60 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_value_get_fraction_numerator from 0xa4bc76a0 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_value_get_fraction_denominator from 0xa4bc7630 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_structure_get_name from 0xa4bb17f0 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_segtrap_set_enabled from 0xa4b6fe30 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_message_parse_buffering from 0xa4b97c90 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_message_parse_info from 0xa4b97550 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: Found DSO: libgstaudio-0.10.so.0 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_audio_sink_get_type from 0xac362050 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: Found DSO: libgstvideo-0.10.so.0 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_video_sink_get_type from 0xaec2c2f0 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: load: Setting media URI: http://a1479.phobos.apple.com/Features/y2004/m04/d30/h19/dj.pktbqmuz.mov 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: load returns 1 2008-02-04T13:02:27Z INFO: playing media... I gave it a try on Fluxbuntu on a different computer. I was not able to play movies, but I'm unsure if it was the same issue. Fluxbuntu wasn't cooperating well with my other box, so now I'm installing the 32-bit version of Fedora 8 on it. Once it's done, I'll try again.
Edit: Found the solution to the problem I was having in Fluxbuntu, and I rather run something light like Fluxbuntu on this machine. I'll post the outcome later tonight. Edit2: Ok, I gave it a quick test run on Fedora before installing Fluxbuntu again, then after I installed Fluxbuntu, I tried it again. Both did the same thing that this computer is doing. Either I'm not installing something I should be, or it's something with the network. I have all my box's attached to a router, that goes to my apartment building's network. I've had various other problems with other games as well. Such as I can not connect to SWG, so I know that certain ports are restricted in this building. Even when connecting straight to the building's network, and not going through my router, I still get the same results. *sigh* |

I had problems similar to the above (except for the buffering problem which sounds like a server/networking issue) but it was solved by installing gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse.
The 2008-03-26T05:19:28Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: Found DSO: libgstreamer-0.10.so.0 2008-03-26T05:19:28Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_init_check from 0xa985d6e0 2008-03-26T05:19:28Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_message_get_type from 0xa98834c0 2008-03-26T05:19:28Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_message_type_get_name from 0xa9883410 2008-03-26T05:19:28Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_message_parse_error from 0xa9883790 ...... type messages always seem to happen, so that can be misleading. EDIT:
Ignore all that was said in this post previously. By getting rid of Bad-Multiverse and using Ugly-Multiverse in it's stead, I was able to get video. However, sound is now not working. I've tried every mixture possible with the good, the bad, and the ugly, but in the end had no luck. Before I would get the same errors as the post above me, but I could still hear it. Now I get the same errors, but can not get any sound. And I get this with .mov files on the FreeView TV at the Debian Info Center: 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: Found DSO: libgstreamer-0.10.so.0 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_init_check from 0xa91366e0 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_message_get_type from 0xa915c4c0 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_message_type_get_name from 0xa915c410 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_message_parse_error from 0xa915c790 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_message_parse_warning from 0xa915c670 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_message_parse_state_changed from 0xa915cb80 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_element_set_state from 0xa914b580 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_object_unref from 0xa9137680 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_object_get_type from 0xa9137930 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_pipeline_get_type from 0xa916a680 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_pipeline_get_bus from 0xa916a610 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_bus_add_watch from 0xa9142590 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_element_factory_make from 0xa9151b90 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_element_get_type from 0xa914b1e0 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_static_pad_template_get from 0xa9169cf0 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_element_class_add_pad_template from 0xa914d730 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_element_class_set_details from 0xa914d680 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_caps_unref from 0xa9144a30 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_caps_ref from 0xa91442d0 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: _gst_debug_register_funcptr from 0xa9158d10 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: _gst_debug_category_new from 0xa915a360 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_caps_is_empty from 0xa9144470 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_caps_from_string from 0xa9145c90 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_caps_replace from 0xa9144be0 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_caps_get_structure from 0xa9144560 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_caps_copy from 0xa9145de0 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_caps_intersect from 0xa9146420 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_element_register from 0xa9151670 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: _gst_plugin_register_static from 0xa916df40 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_structure_get_int from 0xa9176b40 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_structure_get_value from 0xa9175b60 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_value_get_fraction_numerator from 0xa918c6a0 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_value_get_fraction_denominator from 0xa918c630 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_structure_get_name from 0xa91767f0 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_segtrap_set_enabled from 0xa9134e30 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_message_parse_buffering from 0xa915cc90 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_message_parse_info from 0xa915c550 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: Found DSO: libgstaudio-0.10.so.0 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_audio_sink_get_type from 0xaca0b050 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: Found DSO: libgstvideo-0.10.so.0 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: grab_gst_syms: grabbed symbol: gst_video_sink_get_type from 0xaca022f0 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: load: Setting media URI: http://www.pixar.com/theater/shorts/gg/quicktime/gg_320.mov 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: load returns 1 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: looping media... 0 2008-03-30T00:52:56Z INFO: playing media... What is GS Streamer? Do I need it to play parcel media? What formats are usable on parcel media? Are the Lindens retards for not having a list of formats even though Torley produced a video about the subject for crying out loud?

It's GStreamer, not "GS Streamer." Yes, you need it to play video media in world.
From the official GStreamer website (http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/): "GStreamer is a library that allows the construction of graphs of media-handling components, ranging from simple Ogg/Vorbis playback to complex audio (mixing) and video (non-linear editing) processing. Applications can take advantage of advances in codec and filter technology transparently. Developers can add new codecs and filters by writing a simple plugin with a clean, generic interface. GStreamer is released under the LGPL." The Lindens are not retards. It is stated over and over again in multiple places on the website that Quicktime is the format used in world for video. Audio-only media (Internet radio, DJ stuff, Voice, etc.) are different issues and handled separately. Last, video includes its own audio component (hence the wording in the GStreamer description). I think the easiest (and most legal) way to get video working in SL is, once you gave GST 0.10 installed properly, to buy the codecs from Fluendo https://shop.fluendo.com/ - I have video (including Quicktime) working fine for me in SL using Fluendo's codec plugins.

Late night rambling
04-06-2008 22:22
I managed to get quicktime working (mostly)
I've been working on this for days. Video with audio was working perfectly. I ended up reinstalling Ubuntu, and that's when this started happening. I can see the video, but I do not hear anything. On my other computers, everything works perfectly. I've tried installing Fedora, and Debian on this one, and get the same result. Video... no audio... Since it works on the other computers, but not this one, you'd think it was just a hardware issue, and nothing can be done. But my point is that the audio WAS working before... so therefore something had to be installed only my original installation of Ubuntu, that's required for audio (on this PC at least). Sorry for rambling, it's late, and I'm a bit frustrated. I'll continue to attempt to get both Video AND audio working. (And just plain Audio works fine. Like streaming Music, it's ONLY audio that comes from video that does not play) EDIT: It might be worth mentioning that at the same time that the audio from the videos stopped, Voice Chat stopped working as well. |

I've been having problems with video in SL too. I've seen similar symptoms to what I'm seeing described elsewhere in this thread. Basically, when I hit the play button, the playback seems to start momentarily then it stops. I've tried all the possible solutions I've seen here and elsewhere, but nothing makes any difference.
On trying to play back a movie I get: ** Message: don't know how to handle text/html bus_callback:310: GST error: A text/html decoder plugin is required to play this stream, but not installed. bus_callback:310: GST error: You do not have a decoder installed to handle this file. You might need to install the necessary plugins. bus_callback:310: GST error: Internal data flow error. This is the same error that I get if I try to play the stream back in Totem. |

Now that sound like an audio problema.
I would try sudo apt-get install esound. And force SL to use ESD instead of Alsa. I managed to get quicktime working (mostly) I've been working on this for days. Csteph, if you are using Ubuntu, just install all GST packages and plugins, like listed bellow.
You might need to look for other packes to support h264, theora and quicktime. They are all there, just use Synaptics Package Manager. No need to use other repositories besides the basic ones that come with Ubuntu. Actually, by using others you might break things. I've been having problems with video in SL too. I've seen similar symptoms to what I'm seeing described elsewhere in this thread. Basically, when I hit the play button, the playback seems to start momentarily then it stops. So, I installed esound. Didn't work...
So, I forced SL to use esound only. Didn't work... So, I tried PulseAudio. Didn't work... So, in a last ditch effort to get the damn thing working. I realized that when it was working, it was an older version of SL. So, I installed the 1.19.0.5 version of SL. It freakin worked.... So... I checked the new version......... and it worked.... I'm confused.... |

Ok, using Ubuntu Hardy, I have installed everything I can find for Gstreamer, h264, Theora, and Quicktime, but I still get the error:
** Message: don't know how to handle text/html bus_callback:310: GST error: A text/html decoder plugin is required to play this stream, but not installed. bus_callback:310: GST error: You do not have a decoder installed to handle this file. You might need to install the necessary plugins. bus_callback:310: GST error: Internal data flow error. This is in the console window when I try to play video in-world, and also is more or less the error I get when I try to play the stream in Totem. Now I've noticed that .MOV movies will play (except with no sound), it just seems to be MP4 movies/streams which give me these problems. |

New issues

I need to point out that for audio and video to work, PulseAudio needed to be installed.
The only Videos I can get to work are URLs entered into a FreeView TV. Such as taking the Quicktime address from the Totally Rad Show or Diggnation, and then streaming it. That works... However, I can't get anything else to work. The default bookmarks in the FreeView TV don't work. I was looking at the @HOME TVs with a friend who uses Windows. He could hear and see the LiveTV and other videos just fine, but all I get is this: bus_callback:310: GST error: Resource not found. bus_callback:310: GST error: Resource not found. 2008-04-08T21:04:27Z INFO: checkPacketInID: packet_out_of_order - got packet 330 expecting 223 from 63.210.158.36:13005 2008-04-08T21:04:27Z INFO: checkPacketInID: packet_out_of_order - got packet 405 expecting 253 from 8.2.32.71:13004 2008-04-08T21:04:27Z INFO: checkPacketInID: packet_out_of_order - got packet 1401 expecting 1038 from 216.82.17.40:12035 2008-04-08T21:04:27Z INFO: checkPacketInID: packet_out_of_order - got packet 372 expecting 246 from 8.2.34.47:13006 2008-04-08T21:04:27Z INFO: checkPacketInID: packet_out_of_order - got packet 526 expecting 439 from 8.2.32.71:13004 2008-04-08T21:04:27Z INFO: checkPacketInID: packet_out_of_order - got packet 451 expecting 369 from 63.210.158.36:13005 2008-04-08T21:04:27Z INFO: checkPacketInID: packet_out_of_order - got packet 1480 expecting 1424 from 216.82.17.40:12035 2008-04-08T21:04:27Z INFO: checkPacketInID: packet_out_of_order - got packet 518 expecting 418 from 8.2.34.47:13006 |

I just installed Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy), did all the updates, went into Add/Remove Applications, search for GST in All Available Applications, and clicked to install:
Movie Player (Gstreamer) Gstreamer extra plugins Gstreamer ffmpeg video plugin I did NOT even install Ubuntu Restricted Extras, nor GStreamer plugins for mms, wavpack, quicktime, musepack. Video seems to work fine with me. I'm at Brasil Sul/139/71/22, watching movie trailers. Now, remember, this is 32bit Ubuntu. Video is not going to work in 64bit, as long as Gstreamer isn't shipped for 64bits. Care to leave the location of the videos you guys are trying to watch? Ok, using Ubuntu Hardy, I have installed everything I can find for Gstreamer, h264, Theora, and Quicktime, but I still get the error: This is in the console window when I try to play video in-world, and also is more or less the error I get when I try to play the stream in Totem.
