Hi,

in the Update-Message it said, Movie Playback would be working now. Did anyone manage to get it working? Do I need any extra programs for that?

Hi - more info is in the README. In short, you'll need the GStreamer-0.10 libraries and appropriate decoder plugins for them.

Hi Tofu!

I've downloaded all gstreamer libs and plugs... it looks like it is working. On console, i see the messages for gst loading, but it always stops on middle of cache filling, sometimes near 1-5%, sometimes near 30%.

If i can provide better debug info, please tell me.

EDIT: Got it to 99% now, but noting happened,. Tryed again, got 40%.. Again 25%... :/

I can't immediately imagine why, unless the remote video server (or your internet connection) is overloaded. You could try a different stream, and/or try the same stream in Totem.

For debug info:

AMD 2400+
1Gb RAM
Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 (with latest nvidia drivers) 128Mb
Linux Fedora 7
600Kbps ADSL

commented export LL_GL_BASICEXT=x

Example console output:

After that, it stops. The same video works on totem, and another linux user reported me in-world that he can see that videos (on tube2sl cinemas)

EDIT: Tested with uncommented export LL_GL_BASICEXT=x and nothing changed... If you have any another idea of what could i try...

EDIT2: Sometimes the client is crashing (black screen) after trying to load a movie.. but I cant find a pattern yet, the same movie sometimes crashes, sometimes dont.

Ok, at least i am begginingto see some kind of patter on what is happening:

Looks like on every time i try to see a movie, cache fills less.

And after 2 or 3 trys to see the same movie, SL gets a black screen, nothing works anymore, and i neek to kill the client.

I've changed and reduced some quality settings, put up and down the Kbps bnetwork settings, and nothing changed.

(I posted this in another thread, but maybe this is a better place for it.)

Whenever I click the play video button, nothing appears to happen inworld, and I get the following message on the console:

INFO: convertImageAndLoadUrl: MEDIA> unable to load I can play nearly all of those videos in gstreamer itself (so far, anything except videos with MPEG-4 audio) with the command line:

gst-launch playbin uri=[url]All of the gstreamer 0.10 plugin packages are installed - base, good, bad and ugly. All the gstreamer libs are in /usr/lib, and their plugins are in /usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10. I've even added /usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10 to my $LIBPATH, but still no video in SL.

Looking through the logs, after it's found libgstreamer-0.10.so.0, it grabs a number of symbols, but then I get three WARNINGs, one of which is the same as Birkoff's:

grab_gst_syms: Failed to grab symbol: gst_message_parse_buffering
grab_gst_syms: Failed to grab symbol: expected_to_be_missing
grab_gst_syms: Failed to grab symbol: gst_message_parse_info

Debian Etch, kernel 2.6.18-4-k7, AMD Athlon64 3800+, 1GB RAM, GeForce 7600 GS (2.0.2 NVIDIA 87.76)

Tofu (or anyone), any advice?

These are essentially harmless - they merely indicate that this GStreamer version isn't particularly recent, but that's not a fatal problem. I've tested on GStreamer 0.10.7 and 0.10.12.

Could you post the output of 'gst-inspect-0.10 playbin | grep Version' ?

Nothing - I click the Play button, and that's all that shows up in the console. Here's what I get when I log in, on a parcel with a video, and click the Play button a few times (including the ten lines before I clicked the button):

I just compiled everything from the latest stable source, so right now it's:

Still no video in SL, though, even with the latest gstreamer version.

gstreamer not working
08-03-2007 10:43
Hi all,

Tried to get movies working on SL but did not succeed. The error message I get is:

The playback of this movie requires a HTTP protocol source plugin which is not installed

This seems to be a problem in gstreamer, as totem-gstreamer gives the same error message with that stream. I can however open the same stream with vlc.

The console window gives these error messages:

(totem:5201): Gtk-WARNING **: Attempting to add `http://www.archive.org/download/night_of_the_living_dead/night_of_the_living_dead_256kb.mp4' to the list of recently used resources, but not MIME type was defined
** Message: Error: A HTTP protocol source plugin is required to play this stream, but not installed.
gstplaybasebin.c(1602): gen_source_element (): /play:
No URI handler for http

** Message: Missing plugin: gstreamer.net|0.10|totem|HTTP protocol source|urisource-http (HTTP protocol source)
** Message: Automatic missing codec installation not supported (helper script missing)

General info: I am on Debian Sid (unstable) and have all gstreamer-plugins0.10 packages installed, base, good, bad, ugly, also tried: real-bad. What am I still missing here?

By the way: the commands gst-launch and gst-inspect don't work here: 'command not found'.

Hope anyone can help me out.

Greetings,

Z

SirZarath,

gst-launch and gst-inspect are actually called gst-launch-0.10 and gst-inspect-0.10; they're in the gstreamer0.10-tools package.

As to the http streaming, check to make sure you've got both the libgstreamer0.10-0 and libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-0 packages installed.

Still no success
08-03-2007 11:29
Hi Hyacinth and others reading this,

The gst-launch and gst-inspect commands work now if I add the 0.10 in the end. Thank you for the tip!

Thought http-streaming is still not working. I tried it with:

gst-launch-0.10 playbin uri=, which gave error message:

ERROR: from element /playbin0: A HTTP protocol source plugin is required to play this stream, but not installed.
Additional debug info:
gstplaybasebin.c(1602): gen_source_element (): /playbin0:
No URI handler for http

Both libs you mentioned are installed here already:

libgstreamer0.10-0:
Installed: 0.10.13-2
Candidate: 0.10.13-2

libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-0:
Installed: 0.10.13-2
Candidate: 0.10.13-2

gst-inspect-0.10 playbin | grep Version gives:
Version: 0.10.13

Thank you for any further help,

Z

---- UPDATE ---- SOLVED

After trying a lot of things, it turned out that the Debian package gstreamer-10.0-plugins-bad is missing the neonhttpsrc plugin that is needed to play http-streams for some reason. The solution is either to compile the neonhttpscrc plugin manually from the -bad plugin source, or (easier solution) installing:

- gstreamer-0.10-gnomevfs
- libgnomevfs2-extra

With many thanks from the IRC-channel #gstreamer on Freenode

New Problem

I managed to have the movie-streams playing in Totem, so that part is solved.

Now trying the same movies that work in totem to play in SL, I get the following output in the secondlife.log:

Just curious if you've tried playing the wget'd file (locally) via mplayer. Totem-gstreamer is a good test too, if you can get packages for it.

Just did it. It's a broken file. I'll bug All Fur Radio about it.

Thanks, this is useful information, though I can't yet see why it would be happening. Could you please post your GStreamer version number as described above?

Sure... There it is....

[birkoff@birkoff ~]$ gst-inspect-0.10 playbin | grep Version
Version: 0.10.12

I have tryed many things too, very strange it dont works... I was playing with many config, from cache size to bandwith conf, and nothing changed the result... :(

Tofu, under what conditions does the message "convertImageAndLoadUrl: MEDIA> unable to load" get displayed?

Any form of failure in starting the video stream.

I don't normally post here as I don't use Linux, however I do have experience in machinima and host and streaming media content into SL.

I checked out the movie and I can perhaps shed some light on why those that try viewing this within the SL client are seeing blank screens. Firstly, the server it is hosted on has no burst ram facility, its a basic server. Its download bit rate is very low, and can barely keep up with the movie bit rate. The movies bit rate is 302kbps, thats almost impossible to render at that download speed within the SL client, on a webpage or directly in a console player, but not with SL's client running and rendering in realtime.

In my experience, movies with a bit rate of 100kbps or less, give a good experience within SL. We (WBA Advertising) produce a lot of commercial (and a few fun) movie advertising within SL, we carryout all our own post-production, hosting and streaming from our 5 streaming servers (with 2gb burst ram facilities), including supply and install the latest media technology ever to enter SL.

When you are dealing with codex, just because a movie is designated as a mp4, it may also contain elements of the H.264 codex, which is a specific signature for streamine server profiles.

If you want to try out your media systems in SL, drop over to our showroom, we have 9 screens running in a parcel, all with seperate playlists, just walk up to one and it will play automatically, try walking past serveral to watch different movies. All of which (except the IBM movie which bit rates at 120kbps) run at less than 100kbps. There is a mixture of movies, with various codex and signatures applied (we stack up to 5 codex into a single movie) and let me know if you have issues with any particular movie(s) so I can check for codex issues for you.

Nothing to see

Hi AWM Mars,

I went to the showroom mentioned above, found it in your picks.
I passed the screens and for me none of them was playing any video. The only thing I could see was an EML logo and a yellow DNA-like structure on all screens.

The SL output showed a movie that should be running:
http://images.apple.com/movies/fox/fantastic_4-silver_surfer/fantastic4silversurfer-tlr1_h.640.mov

But it was not visible to me. Also pushed the media-play button in the lower part of my screen. That gave an output: "playing media" in the konsole window. But nothing ever happened. I still don't see *any* movie. So it does not seem CODEC-related to me but more an issue with the client and/or my setup. But I have no clue where to look. Also see my other thread called 'no video' for further details.

Thanks for your help.
