Neither is polluting threads with pointless distro squabbling. Really, did you have to dig up a post from over 2 weeks ago just to add your 2L when its clear for all to see the conversation has moved on.

Your argumentation is called "argumentation ad hominem" (see also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_hominem). This means that you do not contribute arguments yourself but instead but instead attacking contributors like me. I am not attacking you or anybody else if I would not have to defend myself if I am attacked as a person.

I have made some clear points. I am not reading this forum all day. i responded to repeatedly false advertisement of "Ubuntu is easy and for newcomers". In fact this newcomer now faces the problems that are common under Ubuntu. I have made clear that i see some benefits in Ubuntu but do also have arguments again that I will continue to post as long as ppl recommend Ubuntu as the best solution ever for newbies. Because that leads to Newbies to install Ubuntu to finally realize that it is not that easy. I am talking about my experience. Strangely enough ppl continue to make the same experiences (because they are based on facts not on fiction).

I would also not recommend ppl to use unstable versions of Debian. And I think it makes no sense that you instead of giving argument continue to attack me agressively and personally for months. You critisize me for not being positive but you did not provide any arguments that will help.

The thing on this forum is: Newcomers that are good will read the posts and may think the really Ubuntu Kubuntu is the only way if nobody else guives a second opinion. Why on earth is it bad to give a second opinion about distros? I have installed Ubuntu three times for newbies (instead of Fedora) but will not do so again. This are my experiences. How often did you install Ubuntu?

Please discuss "Pro or Contra (K)Ubuntu" in a separate thread. This thread is for this user's particular problem.

WTF?? This isn't an argument, this is a discussion to help Llauren Mandelbrot get SL running (and in the process help other users in the future with similar problems). I don't even care how you think you have contributed anything to this thread, if you want to argue about anything, please start a thread in the provided Sandbox forums.

sudo nvidia-glx-config enable

Should do it.. then:

Check your xorg.conf file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) to make sure that DefaultDepth is set to 24.
Like I tell Vinci below, I checked this before posting the log.:D
From: Theora Aquitaine

apt-get install nano

then sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

find the DefaultDepth line and make sure it is 24.

ctrl-alt-backspace (to reload X)

Then it should (hopefully) work.
Didn`t quite. Did I do something wrong?

Come on everybody! I appreciate that y`all`re tryin` ta help --really, I do!-- but KUbubtu is already installed, and I need to move on. Arguing in this thread about which version is better is no longer useful: The deed is done.

Arguing that Vinci shouldn`t have posted here isn`t useful either. His/her point of view seems to be valid. The only real problem I have with it is that it is too belated to help me.

So please, let`s just drop it --both sides!-- and concentrate on the problem at hand, shall we?

Huh? Whose home page? Fred`s?
05-17-2006 09:26
From: Zi Ree
If this is the case, try setting up the driver following the NVIDIA readme on the home page and then running "switch2nvidia" on the command prompt. This will patch your xorg.conf to use the new driver. Reverting back to the open source driver can be done by using "switch2nv".
I`m sorry; just whose "Home Page" are you talking about? Are you perchance refering to the official NVidia Welcome page? At any rate, what is the Uniform Resource Locator for this page?

Already checked that....
05-17-2006 09:32
From: Vinci Calamari
The problem is that with Kubuntu you will have to edit the graphical settings by hand. So you would have to learn xorg.conf (in /etc/X11) configuration. As I just wrote earlier: (K)Ubuntu is not userfriendly.

Vinci
I had already checked that file before posting, and th e color depth was set correctly. Check again, please; I think that you`ll find that the log indicates driver issues, and I would like this confirmed or refuted, if possible. Thanks!

Look at my later link.. I think my first advice was slightly out of date (I don't use Ubuntu or Kubuntu so I can't try it out for myself).

Make sure you have both the Universe and Multiverse repositories enabled.

do:

sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list_backup
sudo kate /etc/apt/sources.list

and uncomment (remove #) from the universe and multiverse lines.

sudo apt-get update

Then.. here are the commands:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx linux-restricted-modules-`uname -r`

(note those single inverted commas are back sloping ones (i.e. on my keyboard they are on the top left just under escape). You could alternatively type uname -r on the command line and use the output from that as the last part of the linux-restricted-modules-***

then:

sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup
sudo nvidia-xconfig

then ctrl-alt-backspace

I see you got root

and you are a fellow vi user!

try sudo apt-get install nvidia-xconfig

then sudo nvidia-xconfig

or alternatively edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change Device to read "nvidia" rather than nv
