You can always help people all on your own, I've never really understood why people need to be part of a group to do this. I used to help people all the time but frankly I got tired of the griefers who wasted my time and the requests for sex. So sadly I don't help as much as I was when I started because of it.

9 months.

Finally got an approval. Beginning to wonder what the hell the fuss was all about to be honest.

Application process
09-19-2007 08:33
Well, I could have sworn that the application page said "must have been in SL for at least 2 months". Attempting to submit an application before this time frame was not possible.....Anyhow, I applied yesterday...........now the window says minium of 6 months in world.....but my application is pending???? I'm way confused. So I just help at various orientation stations and help island. We'll see....

Its unfortunate, but I joined in July and tried a number of times to join up with the knock back "wait for 2 months" - so I did - and the day I was two months old it went to 6 months lol

not to worry - I have patience and will be around in 4 months in any case.... lets just hope it doesn't go up further in February 08 :P

Regards

I applied in December '07. My application is still 'under consideration'.

Major armed conflicts haven't had this much consideration given to them. Maybe I'm more dangerous than I realised.

Cripes... ya can moan if they haven't approved your application, when you post it 4 months in advance lol..

Having been a greeter for some 18 months, this group was disbanded and I was 'ported' to Mentor status. However as the group only seems to be orientated towards USA residents, the 'induction' times are only relevant to USA business hours/days. Although I hold the status on file, I cannot participate until I've been inducted. Talk about red tape getting in the way. Having offered my services for a long time, have a good longstanding history in SL, I'm 'trusted' to meet/greet and mentor ppls on help islands, but because LL can't get off their butts and approve me, or anyone else, to do work which is clearly their domain, for nothing, speaks volumes.... they don't see any of this as a priority. Any company in RL knows, have a crabby receptionist and you loose business, don't have a receptionist and you loose even more.
The net result is, the structure that has existed for the longest time has lost its viability. I'll continue to do what I have always done, my own thing, I don't need 'approval' from the Lindens to do that. Oneday, as people loose interest in waiting for 'approvals' and the formal structure of the 'receptionist' is long gone, LL may wonder why the retainment of accounts is getting lower. Maybe at that point, they will either have to wake up to their fumblings, or actually have to pay people to take the place of all those that they kept waiting at the door.

Mentor approval
09-26-2007 06:51
The more I thought about it, I realized that the application page did say "min of 2 months in-world" experience when I applied...... So I emailed Blue Linden with my concerns. I did receive a reply. Essentially the requirements have been changed to "six months in-world" experience. Why? "Because of the rapidly changing and challenging enviorment with in SL"....Okay, I'll buy that. I emailed a "thanks" for your reply, but threw in " There are alway exceptions. Some folks have more experience (tech skills) than others as well as people skills", and that I would wait and continue to offer assistance when asked. I got a second email from Blue stating "since you applied when the requirements were only two months, you won't have to wait four more"......LOL From what I've read, sounds like I'd be lucky if I get a response in six months.....Oh well I am, by nature a very optimistic person. I did receive very prompt replies (less than 24 hours) to all of my emails.

The question is, if you first need to wait 4 more months until you're 6 months in-world, and THEN 6-9 additional months waiting for them to get through the backlog. :D

I think help Island works pretty good compared to this, even without the "approved" helpers that's there. It's the application screening staff that really needs the volunteers. Btw, I'm availiable ;)

Check out the benevolent player-run organizations "The Shelter" and "NCI" who will actually respond to your request to volunteer.

I was a member of Mentor and Live Help. Aside from the utterly useless group tag, I got a couple of even more useless and horribly outdated notecards from the Linden in charge of these programs. As for "application consideration" you should read that as "despite our best efforts...".

I just got my acceptance letter Friday. So that was less then 4 months.

It’s not surprising to run across some jaded ex-Second Life Mentors. I certainly understand that people get frustrated and disheartened for any number of reasons. But I’m told there has been some movement towards improving the volunteer program, and I’ve spoken directly with Blue Linden and aired my concerns, as others have and should continue to do. And this was while my application was in review.
I see the Second Life Mentor program as so much more then a tag to show off. Hell if someone just wants a tag they can make their own group and put Mentor at the end of it, wait I did with the Voice Mentors…lol Seriously anyone that knows me or the story knows that’s not why I made that group!
Anyway. What makes the Second Life Mentors special I believe is their access to the non-public Help and Orientation Islands, its there that their assistance is most needed. Many of you know that the attrition rate for new residents is abysmal. I’ve heard up to 60%. Just type any first name and last initial in the People tab of Search and scroll through all the empty profiles to get a feel for just how many people never got far in their second life.
It really tugs at my heart to see a newbie type “Help me I’m so lost”. But with just a little assistance, many of them have the patience to keep at it on the hopes that they’ll get out of the kiddy pool. Still so many are missed, get frustrated and never come back.
So to anyone out there who is eager to help and I suppose, as disillusioned as I am, I encourage you to apply as a mentor, or at least look into the many volunteer programs available.
And that concluded my PSA

You have to remember that LL is focusing on 'giving' API links for those that want to develop their own OI's. That tells me a lot. Combine with the run down of support, the change in time ingame and the lack of group notices, meetings, even leadership to a point.

I don't need a tag, in fact you can help ppls without a tag, when and where you like (except LL controlled HI's), but that like fishing in a barrel, but you are the fish LOL.

mentor waiting time
11-21-2007 03:19
Hi I rejoined SL in June..A While later I applied to become a mentor.I have now been accepted. During the intervening period (a) I put it to the back of my mind...if the L wanted me I was here.....and (b) I have a place near NCI and often found Newbies arriving and many I was able to help......

..... so patience my friends and continue to help where ever you can.....remember, as I do, that being a Newbie can be a pretty lonely position once you get away from the densely packed HIP`s etc

I am going to sound off now. LLABs SAYS. you can`t be banned EVER! BUT yet i still see countless people that have been ex griefters in the past ( some that where banned for griefting me in the past. ) Its just a joke these days! people that have caused harm and grief to others and the game are now mentors? This is just sick!

Just, you dont have to be a "titled" volunteer for helping :)
Helping is always wanted at help island
see you there.

Actually, after yesterday's Mentor meeting, LL plans on creating Linden approved groups to prevent scammers and griefers.

Isn't that what already we already have/had?

I waited a year and found out mainly by accident I logged in one day and i was in the mentors group however a year later I'm no longer in the position to mentor. I kept trying to attend the meetings but I would come home from work and pass out and miss them because I was unconcsious from work. A year ago I would not have had this problem if i was approved when I applied (the 4-6 weeks thing) because obvious I applied when I had the time and ability to mentor. I would still like to mentor but I spend most of my time off these days just well sleeping due to work load and sometimes working 24 hour stretches and then passing out for 2 days to recover. If there were no meetings and I could mentor for an hour here and an hour there when i had the time and not at some predetermined time it would be great. right now schedulling my extracuricular activities does not work. So anyhow after rambling on about that you may wait up to a year to get into the mentorship program. I was in fact mentoring before i went to meetings but was removed because I could not attend meetings even though there was nothing wrong with my mentoring. Make sure you can attend their meetings as well by the way they happen once a month and well ... I have yet to schedule any of the "training" sessions and not be asleep at the time they are occuring so for now I guess I am "inactive".

I know the competition that will come along someday is learning from LL's mistakes. But do they have to make so many?
