Today, after waiting since june 12th, acording to my logs of posting the two applications for live help and mentor, and emailing jeska on 7/16, i think ive waited long enough, and have now gathered that they obviously dont want volunteers.

Curious, but anyone else having this waiting period? or just me?

Mentor took about a month or two for me to get added to. And Live Help took alot longer. Patience is a virtue, especially if you are interested in LH.

Yes, that is true, but if they really wanted volunteer help, they would be more timely :)

It took me upwards of 4 months to get Mentor approval. It comes and goes with demand and isn't anything personal I assure you. :)

Basically-SL would only hire new mentors, instructors, live helpers, etc. IF they feel they need you. I personally think they need many more mentors-My friend has an account which is still on help Island 2 and trust me: Mentors are scarce everytime we're on it-Sometimes 1, mostly none...

Ive replied back to philip with this concern, as i dont entirely like things like this being ignored... Maybe then we'll get some results as far as more mentors and what not.

Well at least you showed good judgment in how to measure a response and where to best direct it. That's one of those skills you need for the job.

Thanks for moving this thread in a positive direction, Taco. We certainly take resident feedback seriously. Also, we realize the the wait for volunteer applications can be frustrating. This is why on the application page it says it can take between 3-5 weeks for an application to be processed. This is because we have so many passionate prospective volunteers. It may be that we need to make an adjustment to this figure so as not to create unrealistic expectations. Your continued feedback is greatly appreciated!

Haven't you thought about helping people while you wait for your application get in?

Stop waiting, start helping people already.

Volunteers do not get paid. That's why they're called volunteers. People do it because they want to give something back to the community, even though there appears to be less than appreciation on the part of Linden Lab for those who do help.

past over
08-21-2006 01:31
the one thing I want to say as nicely as I can is I just wonder why I am past over for an instuctor job. I have applyed twice and not geven any reason other thanthat I am not old enough or that their not adding others at the time. Which is not true in both cases because I am 80 days old and I know of others who have been excepted since I got rejected about the same time. I have been a real life teacher and find teaching on second life very relaxing. I have not been bad on second life and have not been ion trouble. SO why I get past over I dont know, maybe its the drug test, but that is something else I would like to know. It is not the reasons given in the form letter. If I knew what it is then I would correct it, I do want to be an insturctor and will keep applying as long as it takes. well gues I should stop here but just wondering.

Same experience, I waited about 4 weeks and heard nothing back and then unrelated to my application I was harassed by an SL Mentor with the initals BB who's still a mentor after I filed AR. And then they told us they're closing the forums and I said yeah... sure I will volunteer... riiiight... and cancelled.

My live help application has been stuck in the "Application under process." phase for about... 5 months or so.

I just leave it there, and carry along my daily business, hoping that some day it goes through.

Live Helpers are added on a need to basis. Basically it goes in waves of groups. When people either leave the group or don't live help anymore, the Jeska dips into the pool of applications and adds some more people to the group. At least that's what i've been told. It's nothing personal most of the time people have to wait a good amount of months before they hear of any "openings". Some Live Helpers are really dedicated and are tagged in for many hours a day. If you get a few people like that in the group, the need for new volunteers just isn't there, until those people drop off.

I waited (not always patiently) 2 and a half months to be accepted to the mentor program. I have enjoyed it immensely since. Before I was official, I helped people in the welcome areas. I have always felt appreciated by LL, fellow mentors and new people alike. I am considering applying to be a Live Helper and when/if I do, I will wait (probably not always patiently LOL) until my name comes up to the top and I get accepted. ;-)

I have a feeling there will be lots of Live Helpers needed when the forum does close it's sections.
There will be those who post in specialized sections (like content creation) when they need help but the majority post in general.
Once the ability for fellow residents to help them through that avenue is snipped away, live help is going to have thier hands even more full then normal. They will likely need new recruits.
Hang in there..

Personally I think they should add a reference check, since some folks may have knowledge about how the prospective volunteer would handle, or NOT handle the responsibilities thereof

I have been a Mentor for about 2 years now and an Instructor just over one year, and applied to Live Help just over a year ago too (July I think?). I had more or less given up on the idea when out of the blue, while I was online yesterday, I finally got accepted! :D Thanks, Jeska..... :)
