I'm fairly new to SL but this is a place I'd love to rent a home. Would it be worth you setting up a waiting list for interested parties, it might give you an idea of the take up if you could get it going? Best of luck.

I'm new to SL and interested in this as well. I was already thinking about doing some SciFi oriented creations.
Did this or is this happening? I'd love to join in. - Kat |

I'd like to see large roleplaying areas, mostly. I'd probably rent a cheat apartment in an in character section. I can also help with decorating and building..

I like SciFi, but not enough to roleplay or pay lots. However, I'd be interested in visiting, and maybe attending specific events or games.

I would like to see something non-brand. A generic 4x space game, trade, explore, build, attack, where players could fly ships, buy/sell/trade commodoties, build starbases, mine resources. That kind of thing, kinda like EVE online in SL.

my advice...

...for what it's worth. Start out by establishing who your client base is and what they want. I haven't been on SL long, but are there ever Sci-Fi conventions? If there's not, then organise one. See if Linden can attract any sci-fi celebs to log on and do talks. Do surveys at these conventions. Get in touch with sci-fi store owners and ask if you can leave a survey there. Find out what the big sci-fi demands are.
Also, a single island might not work. Ever seen the end of Blazing Saddles? Think Westworld instead. Seperate & distinct areas. Build part of the Enterprise for Trekkies / Trekkers to play in, build part of the Death Star for the Star Wars bunch. Build part of a Canadian forest / quarry for the Stargate people ![]() |

modelling

This thread got me thinking about the modelling process in SL. We all know it's not as powerful as software such as Max, Maya and Lightwave. Many people have expressed interest in a way to import RL 3D models into SL. This endeavor is screaming for that kind of solution. Sci Fi buildings and ships are very easy to come by in RL. There is a great site (http://www.scifi3d.com/) with tons of Star Trek, Star Wars, Glactica models. Modellers have created an enormous amount of buildings for Tattoine, Coruscant, Death Star, etc.
It might be worth while to get some programmers together on creating a model importer. That would significantly reduce the amount of work needed for modelling. I personally have a HUGE collection of 3D meshes that I'd be glad to make available for this community, if someone can figure out a way to import .OBJ files into SL. I know it'll happen sooner or later, I'd prefer sooner! |
