Tis an interesting idea, but I'm not as interested as most would (Dr Who fan on the SFi front, but nowadays my heart is in Uru).

I agree with others who say to drum up interest in-world instead of via the forums. Starting with talking to the officers of the various groups related to your themes. That *should* get you enough interest to begin.

Oh, one final note: Arthur C. Clarke is the name (note the 'e'). (big fan of his work, I would rather not have it misspelled ;) )

Sci-Fi Island

Okay, it's nearly August.
Stargate Fans have new episodes.
The Ori are in our galaxy. The Wraith are coming.
They may spare us in SL if we dedicate four sims to their worship!
Where is Sci-fi Island?

Will there be something like a sci-fi version of the eternal fate thing? Eternal fate is, as far as I know, a dungeon crawl thing. You go there, get a medieval or fantasy weapon, go into the dungeon, search for treasure and fight monsters.
Maybe this idea has already been mentioned but I overlook or forget some of the things I read.

This all sounds great to me. I am so new I do not even know where to begin BUT my the Avatar I am creating is a Klingon. I want to check this place out and see how things will work. Wish I had some skills to offer but I do have idea. StarFleet Academy?? How about a the Klingon Warrior Academy? Someone come up with some different types of Klingon armor, weapons, and equipment? I will be the first one there.

Sci Fi All The Way

Hey Adam this is an awesome idea. Can you do it on one island. Why the need for shopping on the Island. Use the whole island just for RP. Have a shop somewhere in SL to buy memorabilia. Just use part of Island to rent out to pay Tiers. Use the rest for your idea. SL has enough shops.

Would I be able to fly a ship and it look like being in outer space with planets and the whole thing or would flying a ship just be in the usual SL sky?

Great idea. I think the amusement area would be popular but after a while it would be
boring unless you continually changed the attractions.

I say forget that area also and just keep the living quarters needed to rent out and devote the entire island to RP.

I have a friend who is an amazing builder. I am going to ask him if he would be interested.
He is a game programmer in RL.

Good luck.

I just wanted to suggest maybe starting a blog or getting on one of the other secondlife related forums so all of this information is not lost when they shut this one down. Keep me informed as I would veyr much be interested in being a part of this wonderful island. Though I can't offer much, I am not a programmer or a builder, Iw ould be very interested in renting an apartment.

Good Idea

Event is a very good way to entice people to notice, also note that me and many others are constantly looking for freebies, so giveaway items may be a good draw to the island, esp. if sci fi themed

Adem,

Hudson mentioned freebies....

It just so happens that 2 Sundays ago i participated in the Stargate RP event at Galaxy. I thought it was a bit silly because almost all the Jaffa were wearing SGC uniforms and we had to use Star Trek Phaser rifle freebies for the RP because they are the only thing that works with the RP shield there. At a distance (60+ meter) our friendly Jaffa looked exactly like the enemy SGC (at that range you just see the uniform), so i shot wounded several of my own team. This bothered me. So when i got back home i built a free Jaffa uniform to be given out at the RP events, absolutely free. This way the teams can be told apart. It's nothing great... (if someone wants great they can buy a good one from Jaffa Nation), and all textures used are the Linden textures. What it is, is absolutely free with the only full perms so the recipient can customize it (Got a better texture? use it), and the only string attached is that it should never be sold... just given away.

As for the phaser rifle. I also thought that was silly. So i ripped the scripts out of that freebie phaser rifle and built a Jaffa staff weapon and placed them in it. Now the Jaffa can fight using a Jaffa weapon instead of a star trek weapon. Same script, no changes to anything but the weapon appearance. Again, absolutely free & full perm (except for the script which is no mod) and again, the only string is never to be sold, only given away.

I gave these freebies to the event organizers at Galaxy for their future events.

What they don't have is the version 2.0 freebie staff weapon (moved root prim to the front so the ammo load could actually be seen) that i completed 2 days ago. version 2.0 Jaffa outfit i'm building right now (still free), because i absolutely hate the Linden textures i had to use and went searching for something better (keeping with freebie textures).

I offer my freebies to you, Adem, for use in your Stargate RP. Please IM me in game if you want them.

Great idea :) I used to really love Stargate, and have been waiting for awhile to get back into it. This sounds like a good opportunity.

Unfortunately, my av never wears clothes. Normally this is fine, as it doesn't violate 'no genitals' rules due to being sexless most of the time (no genitals) and covered in fur (so no flesh can be seen anyway). Unfortunately a 'no nudity' rule would probably exclude my av. I'd probably visit if the rule was changed to 'no visible genitals' though.

Short version: What you describe is building a place, but your goal is to build a community. Wander around the mainland of Second Life. I’ve seen some very nice empty places.

Longer: Please visit the existing Sci-Fi roleplay places, and figure out what it that you have to offer that really makes your product stand out. Just having conflicting Intellectual Property a short walk from each other doesn’t really make it stand out, when I can teleport from a Jedi place to Starfleet command already.

The two incomes listed are rent on domiciles and shops which are a small portion of the land in question. Without grabbing a calculator and a slide ruler, I can assure you that other people will be trying to rent out larger tracts of land in the hopes of paying off smaller investments. Your land would be priced around 8 times the going rate. Now, once you have a community and a brand, you may be able to get that for your themed housing, but that’s a long way down the road.

My suggestion would be to: Explore what exists, and find out what’s working and what’s not. Scale back your vision 75% and thus invest only $1250 in start up costs, build one area and the hub and profit centers. If you can get that to work somewhat, and not loose too much money per month, then get more land and start a new area. Quickly you need to brand your place, with a name that focuses on what makes you different. Think about what your community needs, and how to best fit those needs. Think also about how you are asking for people to chip in and help build something that 1) Made up of Intellectual Property neither of you own and 2) You own the rest. The idea of profit sharing on an idea designed to break even might sound silly, but if you can cut those other people into a slice of the pie then those other people might not vanish the second Final Fantasy XII ships. :D

Have fun.

Adam,

You might have to re-think your idea now. If you haven't already bought your island, for this project, you might want to look at the Blog. I see that Linden is raising the cost of islands by around $400 USD, and the cost of tier for these new islands by another $100/month. I won't pretend to know your business plan, but these levels of costs will mean that you'll need to drastically rethink it, because i'm not sure that you'll be able to make the new tier.

On Sunday morning, i checked Lindex and the Linden was down to 250L/1$. The tier on the new islands is $295/month. Assuming Lindex holds at 250 (and we all know it will not), you will need to generate 73,750L per month in income just to make tier. Using SLX Market, on Saturday, the average was 282L/1$, which means you need 83,190L/month income. Assuming you do the normal mall thing of 200L/week rent for 50 prims, you would need to rent out 93 stalls (approx., using the Lindex figure) which would consume approx a third of all available prims. And this doesn't count the prims you will need to consume to build the sci fi mall. Then there is your housing area which will consume far more prims per 1L than the mall will. But, to get your renters and merchants, you will need to reserve huge tracts for RP as well as a few thousand prim. The RP traffic will draw in the merchants.

I'm not sure you can break even doing this, so I agree with Kittyhawk's suggestion to scale back. Start out much smaller than a sim. Maybe business partner with another Sci Fi group... or two. Maybe do away with the housing and split the freed up land between RP & mall (since it is the mall that will pay for your sim).

Not enough space for all that? -- Well trick is to create/expand. Build first what you can afford, make that work function, then move on to stage two, buy more land around to expand the next themed area into.

Hey even if you have to buy islands in a formation to allow future purchase, ie you can't buy land next to someone elses, so create a wall of nothing around your first area's. Four islands with space around each, so that there is no chance anyone else will buy land around you, and plenty of land left for expansion into the center of your area's.

XXXXXX X = Clear area for all time no one can purchase (buffer zone)
X1YY2X 1,2,3,4 = your first islands
XYYYYX Y = Clear areas for your future purchase.
XYYYYX
X3YY4X You could start with four islands
XXXXXX Grow to become a large 16 island complex

Now thats got to be enough space to fit everything surely.

I'd rent, and play, help GM, build, etc etc

Just get in touch (IM) if this idea still floats.

Nice Idea!

But is this Island a soon reality? I'm still new in SL but learnig fast in building stuff.
I like to rent a 1024 Lot to build my own Fantasy space, and sure I can contribute my new skill's in building. Sounds like fun!

Love Star Wars and mostly all other Sci-Fi and Fantasy genre...
Read alot of fantasy and mostly seen all Sci-Fi movies I could lay my hands on... still bussy whatshing Stargate Atlantis :-)

Idea: Why not also build a Fantasy Role Playing area? Lot's of people love Sci-Fi or Fantasy and not both... (also lot's do love both) so the group of intrest will be greater when you also apply Fantasy Roleplaying to this Island. Better for the income off the island!

Idea 2: At simple (FREE) game experiences. Like boardgames/cardgames and other quick and single/multi-player games. This will create groupies

I very love your Sci-Fi Zoo idea, but mostly your Pot race track Idea... I would ride the SL intergalaxtic Pot race team!! hahaha
Whouw... building my own potracer just like Anny :-P

So when can I become your first resident?

Thoughts on Sci Fi RP Island
11-27-2006 14:23
I admire your focus, Adem.

This is all a gamble, but eventually someone will find a solid way to make it work.

As far as the sim complex sounds, its very well thought out. For my taste I am reluctant to sacrifice 'play' area for 'out of bounds.' I didn't get a good idea what the motif of your residential area was going to be like. It sounds nice...but a sci fi sim should probably be futuristic.

Might I suggest that you 'orbit' a large, Bespin-like sky city for the residences and mall. Elegantly arranged, it would make a unique and attracitive draw for people wishing to live in that environment. It could have a lower landing port for aircars and the islands main TP hub, drawing people to a central location.

Best of luck!

I hope this works out for you. Expect to have to hammer out a lot of bugs.

I for one am willing to assist with scripting and building. I am also willing to allow you to place advertizements at any of my four properties, if you think it will help.

I personally would like to live on a space station of some kind. Something really cramped like you see in the Alien movies, or as depicted in "Outland". I always liked that sort of thing, it would also have the major advantage of being able to cram a lot of living quarters into a really small space! Especially if you have the space station quarters in addition to the ground quarters, because everyone will want to live up there. You can roleplay up there too.

Count me in. I'm most interested in the StarTrek and StarWars roleplay areas, or gritty Outland/Alien/BladeRunner stuff.
If I can help in any way, contact me.
