Hi All, I love the worlds created by Frank Herbert in his Dune series of books - I also love the look of David Lynch's Dune film. I've purchased a private island and terraformed it to look like Dune. Be nice to have some Fremen, Harkonnens and Atreides turn up and make the place feel like home. ####SIM FOR SALE UPDATE @ 2nd July 2007 UPDATE#### I've had a number of expressions of interest from people interested in purchasing the sim. In view of this I'll be inviting offers for the sim by Sunday 22nd July. Included in the sale are; the private island sim; all the code for the health meter and assciated weapons, shields, noseplugs etc; and the photoshop template for the stillsuit (plus full perms clothing objects). This should allow the purchaser to cover the monthly rental - as it has done for me for the last 4 months. Offers should be PM'd to me before 12 Noon GMT on the Sunday. Offers should include: - Your offer price for the sim in US$ - A valid email address - Details of how you plan to develop the sim in the future I'm not averse to people making changes to the sim - it will be thiers - and the sim needs work. See the latest posts for more info. In addition to this forum - we have a dedicated forum for group and subgroup members (Please use your SL avatar name when registering): http://dune.simtopia.orgJoin 'The Dune Project' group inworld to participate. I was shopping around once and I think I found a mall that sold Dune items. That's about as close to Dune that I've seen in SL.
Ohh I forgot.. Be sure to add a giant sandworm that pops out of the sand!

Sandworms!
Excellent!
I think I'll have to make one in honour of the literacy works and it's film/gaming counterparts. It'll go well with my Orb of Summoning too. I need to make things to summon with it.
I haven't seen anything in the way of Dune on my adventures around the Second Life universe in the past months. It sounds like a wonderful plan!

Thanks everybody for the comments so far.
As a newbie in SL all I would initially be able to bring to the project is cash and enthusiasm.
We'll need a whole load of skills for this one. I'm excited to hear that there are fremen stillsuits knocking around.
Should we set up a proto-group to get this show on the road?

Oh. My. God. I am the ultimate Dune fan. Sadly I have absolutely zero time and money to spend on this project. But I am definitely interested in seeing it.

I'd love to see this

time is at a premium, and cash isn't much better, but let me add a "me too" for this one as well.. I think there is a lot of potential here for this idea, and I will certainly add my support in whatever way I can - maybe in another month I'll have some free time to enjoy it, too Grae

I've been posting on some non SL Dune forums - not much interest there - probably due to ignorance about SL.
At the moment I'm talking to Linden labs about island purchase, and investigating copyright issues.
I'll keep you all posted.

I just wanted to check on the progress of this project. I read these books as a youngster, just read the prequels, and and re-reading the originals and absolutely love everything about them.
Any forward motion?

I'd like to get some views and ideas on funding/maintaining this project. Do we go for group ownership? or funding via access passes to the area? or go for free access and try to build up the Linden dwell income?
Also, any thoughts on the location in the grid - private island or mainland regions? Pro's and con's please.
Also, when creating our Dune, what period do we go for? I fancy Dune with Harkonnen overlords awaiting Maud'Dib.

I've created a group called "The Dune Project" inworld to administer this project. There is open enrollment to the group - if you are interested in this project in any capacity please sign-up.
Once we have a core group of members we can discuss roles and abilities etc.

I purchased an island for the project yesterday - still waiting for the Lindens to set it up. Co-ordinates x, y: 1051, 1068.
If you are interested in participating in any capacity - join 'The Dune Project' group inworld.
A group member has already created an impressive shai-hulud.

This is great, I can't wait to get started. Thanks to whoever donated the island.
I just joined the group (had to dig out the laptop at work so I wouldn't forget) I'm so excited. I can lend a hand building and I am catching on the scripting pretty well I think so I can hope to contribute a lot.
Now, to be a Mentant, a Bene Gesserit ...
Also, we could start a blog or something to keep things organized. I have a wordpress account and could get one started alongside my normal (second life related) blog. Just a thought.

The island has moved from 'processing' stage to 'pending' stage - which apparently means that it will be available soon.
