Does anybody do tabletop RPGs within SL?
What the hell? You ask. SL *is* an RPG. Or a perfect platform for a MMORPG type thingy.
Bear with me here, though. Where you use your avatar as your character, that would be like LARPing.
So why do the equivalent of a tabletop RPG within SL? First and primarily, the same reason people do PBEM games -- people geographically separated can sitll play together. Second, miniatures become very cheap.... And because, well, why not?
Has anybody tried this? Did it work?

There is no actual tabletop rpg, there are actual rpg games like Darklife and there are many roleplaying sims, one that I am developing with a team currently called Solheimer is a fantasy roleplaying environment, it is not a full RPG game with monsters to constantly fight though we are going to have random events where you have to defend the city and many other things, I know this is not what you were looking for but if you are interested you can check it out at www.solheimerrpg.com .

People have done tabletop RPGs within SL certainly.. Sadly there does not appear to be many of them, cause people in SL also tend to be a bit flakier than RL.
However, if you are thinking of starting a game, I'd be interested.

However, if you are thinking of starting a game, I'd be interested. I'm game master for a regular Friday night D&D game at my place in Vaoetere. It includes: -a HUD dice roller that can handle any size and number of polyhedral dice -life-size modular scenery that allows me to build dungeon rooms, caverns, and so on, on the fly -players who come in costume *as* their characters -scripted weapons and spells -life-size "minis" representing the monsters Take a look at these screenshots to get a sense of what I'm talking about. My game is full, but new games are starting up -- I'll be hosting a meetup at my place soon.

well awhile ago i was looking at my old "skatten i borgen" (treasure in a castle ?no idea what its called in english) game.
I did make it ingame its basicly a random room generator with diffrent monsters/treasures and various items that rezzes randomly on a dice roll when you enter it, game had a set time and rule was get most treasure before you die or time run out, middle of the "castle" theres a treasure chamber wich has a dragon you can loot dragon or roam around beating monsters to get them, it had no xp system tho.
But it was small scale you could make your own char, but had to modify to fit various healthbars/weapons/armor/shields ect, you could fight others if you wanted to, but movement was all on a diceroll tho.
I tried to rez it fullsize so you could just walk inside it once o.o the word primmy dont cover it.
Closest thing i could think of is Hero's quest boardgame look alike.
Did i ever finish it? eh.. sadly no ~.~ but i learned a ton of scripting so i been toying with the idea again latly remake it, no idea if anyone would want that tho.

How about just the tabletop?

That's amazing stuff, Blackthorne, but I'm wondering about less coding-intensive options. Does anyone just meet in SL around a table and roll virtual dice?

One resident, Allen Kerensky (sp?), has a gaming table and a dice roller -- you sit around it and play. The table has a grid, and I think he has little icons to represent the minis. Sounds like what you're looking for. My preference is to take full advantage of what SL has to offer, and make it a more immersive. I'd gladly give you dice HUDs if you want to start your own game.

well its not table top gameing but we do use dice and a a character sheet for vampire dark ages. search for my profile there is a deal for it in my picks.
i alos just finished a character sheet HUD for it. It is not nessiccary to have the HUD it only helps keeping you from digging thru your inv every time you need to look up your stats for a roll. ther is a classifides add for that as well in my profile

I am just in beginning stages of making a prim based rpg game with mico mini avatar action figures and props. I was wondering the same thing. There few things I am still sorting out like is there a percentage type dice that I could use or find script for. Like how to do following. How, When, and where to introduce the micro mini avatar action figures. How to do money or point systems. How to develope challenges, random events based on game board. Prim and Texture designs

I run a table-top game in SL and I'd say it's almost better than RL table-top.
My friends and I get together once/week from around the country and, using a Ventrillo server in the background, sit around a virtual table with virtual miniatures and virtual scenes.
We personally like to roll our own dice each from our individual homes, as having a computer roll dice just takes away from some of the 'feel' of gaming....but being able to rez a prim and build mini dungeons, camps, castles, villages, etc, etc, etc...and have everyone sittin' around the table...it's a lot of fun.
I also find that doing it in this way means I have to prepare...um...ZERO before game-time, which is nice.
Of course...if you're looking for a Role-Play sim...I'd definitely recommend:
Karamoon (midieval)
Midian City (modern)
Neither are created by me, so I'm not "advertising" them to you...but both are very high quality.

I am currently working on a turn based RPG hud that includes character sheets and attacks will work completely on dice rolls and character sheets rather than mouse look, there will be a GM HUD that will show all characters stats/health etc, and am hopping that using alts as NPC's the GM can run all the events as per normal RPG over Ventrilo, SLchat or what ever they like. Loosly based on Cyberpunks simple system stats 1-10 for standard humans 20max for others attack roll vs defense roll with all rolls openended to make thoset punk with the KStore pistols still threatening. I may even limit avatars movement to their movement stat eventually, basically the Avatars will replace normal minatures and the sim becomes the table. As no actual shooting wil be required just some waving of guns, superpowers, spell effects and sounds. It should be able to be used in many sims inworld withholding respect for bystanders. I'm very early in development though and still learning LSL, I am aiming the system to be flexible to allow melee & unarmed combat as well. It is meant to be used by small groups of 2-4 characters & a GM who will declare the results of certain events such as pickpocketing and fumbled rolls etc. Skills will increase in XP for each success during a GM attended session. Stat increases would probably be the responsibility of the GM for alterations to the character sheets.

I recently came to SL because of a thread started in a PbP forum I run games at. I would love to get more info on any and everything I can about running a game. Where do the dice rollers come from? How do you build such cool dungeons? Where can I go to play or run a game?

Lost Nepenthe and Isle of Nepenthe run a Vampie game using WoD with character sheets and an ST. Sort of a cross between larp and table top.

Vampire might be OK, but I don't know it. I'd really like to get into a D&D game.

Hmm well I don't know if anyone is still paying attention to this thread but I've got the beginnings of a GURPS campaign going. Id be interested in picking up more players for the GURPS campaign and starting a D and D one at some point. Im really trying to stick to the old PnP style hand rolling the dice whenever possible and using very little in the way of in-world scripts. Essentially we just all get our avs together and sit around a table. One thing I might try adding in the future would be voice chat but for the moment its all in text. If anyone would be interested in something like that please IM Athena Maeterlinck any time you feel like it.
As a side note I also enjoy being a player in such games so if anyone is browsing through here looking for players I might also be interested in that.

Wow, I haven't played PnP for years, but not out of dislike for the method. It's just been really hard to be able to get together regularly with a group. This seems like a great way to do it.
I've played LARPs, PnP, MUSHs, MUDs, graphical, you name it. PnP remains viable due to its inherent differences, and I don't see any real downside to playing it on SL.
If I had more time (darnit!) I'd volunteer to create a website that listed GMs and players looking for games, with short little questionnaires about the sort of game the player prefers to help in accurate matchups.
Anyone else want to take that project on?

hmm instead of a web site how about a ingame Hud or other device that can give you that information. now that i think about this it would most likely have to used in conjunction with a web site as you would need the web information to propragate inworld to the device. i think it would be a great idea wither way. ok well i would do what i could but i am not very good with web or scripting either. BTW i am looking for some decent RP in SL that meets some very specific guidlines.

I could make such a website it really wouldn't be that hard. The challenge is finding hosting for it. There are groups in SL for this but having an outside single source for everything would be great. And Bizcut you might mention what those guildelines are. I doubt very much I know anyone who meets them but Im curious now.
