Sorry if this is the wrong forum but there didn't seem to be an approprate one.
Hippiepay machines look like old arcade game machines
They claim to log you into a website where you can fill in questionaires and ern L$
However, they don't log you in to anything, you get a spam website where you are told to sign up to spam, under the "why arn't I getting my L$" you are told you may not be putting all the correct details into name, address, email adress etc... signing up for one or filling in one questionare directs you to more spam to sign up for, this is even on diffrent websites.
The whole thing can't possibly work so why is it allowed in SL?

I never got futher than the first stage or seeing it is a blatent ploy. also as I use Firefox I can't get virus for just visiting a website.
I can't see how it is at all possible for them to pay you anything, the system is not there for them to know anything about you'r activerty on the sites they point you at.
They need to be stopped sooner rather than later.

Yes, they are a scuzzy scam that new people seem to get lured into trying.

Well, even if you are only moderately internet-savvy ... as soon as you see their homepage, all the alarm bells go off and it's Alt-F4 time again ...

I did the hippiepay thing when i first started second life. I only got paid for signing up to the dating things, which i cancelled like two days later, the survey ones never worked. I did make $L2000 for doing it though.

From: Opt Shepherd also as I use Firefox I can't get virus for just visiting a website. That's kind of like the old "There are no viruses on mac or linux" chestnut. Yes, FF is a lot better than IE at keeping out nasties, but it has not been entirely without problems. Better to be sure and run antivirus and antispyware programs as well

I HAD hope in them...
04-06-2007 19:12
The one time I tried HippiePay was when I was lucky to find a legitimate spam-free offer to sign up for NPDOR. I had high hopes for HippiePay for a bit after getting a couple hundred Linden$ from that. However, when I went to check it a good few times afterwards, I found nothing nearly as hopeful, just spam-centric material (and maybe an offer for some currently-uninteresting thing like online matchmaking...).
HippiePay ended up feeling like a failed effort at gathering real survey-takers to pay some useful change to participating SL citizens. They have several offers nicely labeled "Survey", but they keep turning out to just be surveying to find out how best to spam me (or something like that). Someday I hope some service like NPDOR starts offering Linden$ for finishing its surveys. (Having found them on HippiePay, I was surprised to find they didn't already.)

It's just a "get paid to take surveys" thing, and many of the offers require you to open accounts and otherwise hand over personal info.

Nefertiti Nefarious, you don't get paid. It says in "signs you into there website" but it does nothing, it's just a lot of spam and contant questions for personal infomation untill you close the websites and walk away from the machine. I had trobble even finding any survays there at all, they are all free IPOD type spam.

If you're willing to run Ad-aware and such, then it's an easy way to make some quick money when you first start. Personally, I just open it up, reap the benefits I can with fake info until my IP gets banned, or whatever they claim keeps you from being payed. Then there's the college IP, the cyber cafe IP, the Starbucks down the street, my friend's computer... When it first started, there was a lot of "Simple zip code entry" surveys that payed out 60-120 linden; Those have disappeared since the company running it realized that no one was going to bother filling out the rest if they got what they wanted after the first page. It boils down to the same sort of trickle-down payment systems that many psuedo-scams are; The person running the ad gets, say, a dollar for a simple entry. They then use that in SL; So it's something like 300L. The person who fills out the survey gets 75% of the payoff, the person who owns the machine they used gets 15%, and Roboto Battery, the account running it, gets the last 10% - In theory. It's more likely that Roboto gets 50%. I know that affiliates (Those who own the machine) get half the payoff that the surveyor gets, so that would mean that the surveyor gets 33%, and the affiliate gets 16% (Rounded up/down.)
So in short; Yes, it does work. I personally have gotten at least $2,000 total over the past couple months using old email addresses I've long stopped using, mashing street addresses together to make something official-sounding but non-existent, and generally abusing the system. Like I said, just gotta be willing to run Ad Aware afterwards. But it's great if you're short on cash for getting some uploads.

From: Opt Shepherd I use Firefox I can't get virus for just visiting a website That is completely false. Firefox is not a "magic bullet", I personally know several people who have gotten viruses while using Firefox to visit junk websites. I adore Firefox, and will never ever ever go back to MSIE, but it's no replacement for common sense.

This isn't so foreign of a concept to LL

Ask the Lindens who work in SF (such as I can totally see Torley and Jeska getting their smoke awn...j/k) if they hang out at the Ben & Jerry's or outside Amoeba Records...in the Haight and how they feel about rl hippie pay...that should be an interesting response. (ps dont get me wrong I love SF and like the haight, but well having a protest just to beg for free ice cream, greenpeace t-shirts and the occasional ganja for arse grab well...maybe I just need to turn in and tune out <or however that quote goes> Heh...cheers. - Calix

I made about L$5000 by giving out fake info. I didn't get any spam, either. They worked fine for me.

Uhh, it works. Maybe they changed the offers since I did it but that money didn't come out of nowhere. Go ahead and believe what you want.

How do you propose a website whitch dosn't know who youand dosn't know where you came fromis going to pay you L$ ? Here is a website http://www.ipodsgiveaway.co.uk/There is a nice spammy site. If you go there in the way that the hippiepay macines send you there then the site knows as much about you as if you clicked the link now. Fill in for a free I-Pod with fake info and would you expect to be paid in L$ for doing so?! If you are lying about this then it is obvious that you are affiliated with the hippi-scam

If you people think I'm part of hippiepay you're retarded. What's so hard about believing a scheme like this actually works? If you're stupid enough to give them your real information then yeah, you're screwed. I used all false information and got L$ after completing the "offers". As a matter of fact, some of them didn't work and I never did get paid after completing them. The vast majority of them resulted in me getting money, though.
Have any of the people saying it doesn't work and it's a scam actually tried it?

It's impossible for it to be working for me and not working for others, so they must be trying one offer, not completing it and then coming here to complain.
