Important Note: I take no responsibility for the accuracy of the advice I have provided here. I strongly suggest you verify this advice with your own ISP before you use it.

*** WARNING ***

This type of advice could be used by a person to exploit your computer by providing a reference to a non Second Life copy of the Second Life executable. The person could then substitue a virus, trojan or other program which could damage your computer. Please be VERY careful before using the information I have provided (after all, I'm a stranger and my motivations are unknown to you). Before using this information you can check the IP address I have provided by using a WHOIS database. I used http://samspade.org/ to check the address I was given. You will notice that the details returned clearly shown Amazon.com as the owner of the address.

Ignore my warning at your own peril.

Ok. Thanks to the clever folk at Internode I have a workaround. This is a known DNS issue with Amazon's AWS service.

The workaround is to edit your hosts file to include the following reference (see my warning above):

72.21.203.129 s3.amazonaws.com

For Windows XP users the hosts file can generally be found in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC.

Once the file is open, drop in the above reference, save the file and try the download again from the Second Life website.

Once your download is complete, re-edit the hosts file and remove the reference above.

Problem solved.

Cheers

hosts (with no extension)

If you are having trouble finding and opening the file try clicking Start, Run and pasting this into the Open line:

notepad %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Note, this will only work for Windows XP users.

Me Too!!! HEEEELLLLLLPPP!!!!!!

My fiends in Brisbane downloaded the new version straight after the update last week with no problems. I have been trying all weekend to download it however, but with no success. It tells me to download it from the website but when I go there it says
-------------The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings. ----------
Ive never had a download problem before..? I'm running windows XP with Norton. Internet connection is working fine. My account is active.working without a problem. Im not sure if I am game enough to try the method shown above unless someone else has success with it first. I am preparing to buy a large amount of land in SL but it would suck if I cant even log on?

I think maybe its my firewall or something but I dont really know how to adjust them. Maybe it only works through Mozilla or Firefox or something..?

Is there another way we can contact Linden Labs?

Changing the host file didn't work. It tried to go to the site but didn't appear to be there (the amazon one).

What a shame Silus. Worked like a charm for me. You might want to check that the hosts file looks as below. You could also try a reboot to clear the cache.

Yes thats what it looked like. Even though I have changed it back. Sometimes it still searches for the amazonaws site but cant connect to the site.

I tried loading through Mozzilla but that didn't work either.

Thanks anyway Freedom.
Do you know if Amazon plan to fix this issue? or will I have to somehow sort it out from this end?

You're welcome. No idea on the fix Silus.

I still recommend you ring your ISP. The solution I got was known to Internode and like I said it worked perfectly for me.

By the way I also tried this on my Linux laptop and it also worked there as well.

Different O/S, different web browser, same fix.

Hmmmm...

TPG ....Never had a problem with them before.

After tonight I may be offline for a few days.
If I had the land I was planning to buy, this would be costing me money.
I hope all is fixed when I get back.
