sl keeps crashing

The crashes were very bad, but now losing stuff after taking 30 mins to an hour to relog on. We have cut our play time by 1/2 and are so searching for another game. SL is going to new version its self right in the TSO bone yard. But at lease it will be on a shelf with good company.

I use 2 machines to log onto the game

1. AMD XP 2500+ Barton, 512MB DDR 2700, Nvidia 5900XT Card Overclocked (from BFG tech), SL resides on a MAXTOR 60GB 7200 RPM HDD using 3gig VM on that drive alone. Windows XP PRO SP2 and norton 2k4(mention this as a lot of people blame norton for many things)

2. AMD Athlon (non xp) 1.3 Ghz, 512 PC 133 SD RAM, ATI 8500 SE (crucial.com version), SL Resides on a Generic (samsung I think) HDD 7200rpm with 2 gigs VM on that drive alone. Xp PRO SP2 and norton 2k4


Stats

1. Rare crashes ..3 actually since i started, 90 percent of the time I run the game in a window 1024*768, shadows on, high detail bump mapping, default draws etc. Commonly run windows media player with 12k + songs in the playlist, and a few other apps along with SL. including sound forge, corel photo shop and ulead gif animator.

2. game crashes at least 1 time a day , crash resets the vpu which ATI's catalyst drivers so "gracefully" reset thus making my display look like a monkey colored it. run a few apps and sometimes open up I.E while in game , SL is run mostly in window mode at 800*600


I can even take screen shots showing all the stuff claimed on no.1

nvidia works for me. use to run the game on a nvidia 5200 as well with no real issues don't remember settings.

Trying to delete inventory items causes the software to crash. Folders delete ok though so....the trick is to make a folder, drag everything you want to delete into that folder then delete that folder. Easy huh, if only the LAG made it easy. heh

I'm experiencing VERY similar problems. What I don't get is, my girlfriend and I are running 2 identical PC's on a home network over a dsl connection. She can play all day long... I, on the other hand, crash pretty steadily. We were having the problem with the Linksys router not allowing both computers to play, but after a visit to the support wiki I found the solution to that problem. I'm just wondering if I'm missing something here, or if I need to totally wipe & restore my PC. Here are the specs for both computers:

eMachines W3050
AMD Sempron 3000+
512MB DDR SDRAM
80GB HDD
nVidia GeForce4 MX (integrated)
nForce2 Audio (integrated)
1.5Mbit DSL, shared between the two computers

Computers were purchased in Feburary, so I know they're not too old! LOL
Never had any problems with any other games, hope someone has some good advice

I have been having similar repetitive crashing/freezing probs too. I don't know if it is my system, my settings, or SL itself. I certainly know that not everyone is having this degree of problems so I'm thinking its something on my end.
If I try to build anything or even set foot in a sandbox my system will completely lock up withing five minutes. Basically I have to unplug and reboot. Also happens when I try to upload textures, create new clothing items, and sometimes when I'm IMing. Here are my specs, if any computer savvy people have any helpful ideas I will personally worship you.

512MB DDR SDRAM
2600+ AMD athelon
80 GB DMA hard drive
Radeon 9600 video card
cable internet (don't know the speed)

I don't know what my preferences should be set at for minimum crashibility, I know shadows are off but I don't know how to set the rest of it.

I've not changed my settings, and they're all as low as they can go, I don't run music or movies, and my draw is at 64...
Today was unbearably slow and laggy. I didn't crash until getting ready to sign off anyway, so that's not too bad, but if the game continues to be like this, when I was happily enjoying 1.6.5 then I may get over this really quick.

I miss so much anyway with this not so old pc, to be sluggish and bumping into things and people, well...it sucks.

Sure hope they fix it.

I just got a new dXFX GeForce FX 5500 / 256MB DDR / AGP 8X / VGA / DVI / TV Out / Video Card and i turned off shadows and all is good and lighting.

Well, I got in there, took a deep breath, and just started tweaking my settings and things seem to be a little better. I wasn't sure what to reduce, but lowered drawdistance and some of the texture settings and now yesterday I only crashed/froze like twice!
(heh, sad that that's a good thing)
I was about to go buy a stick of RAM to help boost things, and I still might, even though I have 512 MB because my crashes seem to be tied to high processing activities in world (like bulding).
Anyway, I hope that the rest of you find things to help too!

i've had two crashes..and a logged out...now what?I"m at my wit's end..any suggestions..??????

It's a very good idea to turn shadows off, especially around koss as i've found that one of the points that crashes the client, local lightning will just eat up your cpu time if you have it and doesnt really require alot of graphics speed.

This is a general little notecard i wrote hope you dont mind if it goes over anything previously mentioned.

The first thing would be to check your graphics drivers are upto date, the latest are usually directly from the manufacturer ati/nivia

The second your computer is probably using motherboard drivers, via/intel etc, these can be got from your pc supplier support pages or direct from viaarena and intel etc

Also the bios of the computer may need updating, on newer computers this can be important as quite a few stability fixes are released early on in its life. Again refer to the computer manufacturer support or if you know the mother manufacter they will have the files too

Check your operating system is upto date with all neccesary patches etc.

For windows users check that the latest version of directx is installed

And last of all would be to uninstall the secondlife client and reinstall, this will clean all settings from the registry as well as cache files etc.

I want to point out since about three updates ago the uninstall part of my SL is gone. So normaly when I had a crashing probly I just hit the old uninstall and was fine. Though without the uninstall program what am I to do? Well my problem is the fact I start up secondlife and bam it starts loading and I'm forced out to desktop with the crash logger. Only did this once about three updates ago when I could have uninstalled it.. Everything is up to date and all the hooha. So tell me what am I to do to fix my secondlife? I'm sick of being gone 3-4 days and find some one my friends left secondlife .. which I could have probly stopped them.

Thanks Nathan great info, you are right about Koss and the shadows needing to be off. I have had some crashes even with shadows off but I am not alone when I do crash so I know it's not just me. I think I will be getting more RAM here soon as well. I have not done a reinstall of SL yet I think I will do that now...thanks again

i just downloaded SL, and i cant even get down the stairs on orientation island or whatnot...
shadows are off...

mine us to crash all the time even after updateing video drivers and via chipsets i found it to be a bad ram chip causing all my problems now sl runs fines

Mine crashes as soon as I pull it up it sasys the update is needed. I've installed that update 5 times now. I have everything turned low or off including shadows. anyone else have that problem? I haven't even been able to get in

Are you still seeing this error? Does uninstalling SL completely, then downloading and installing from the website fix the problem?

Are you on a wireless network? How long have these problems been happening?

So you start SL, and it just makes your computer work really hard? And then you have to reset your computer by pushing the reset button on the front of your computer?

Does this happen all the time, or only at certain points? Try selecting "View" -> "Statistics Bar". (You may have to move your mini map to see it.) What does it say for "FPS", "Ping Sim" and "Ping User"?

I had the same freezing up problem as some of the others. I wasn't even moving much. Just was turning and typing in something, and then it locked up. I think it was about the same time as someone else because they said they had the same problem, when they logged back in. It took a while to relog in, and then it was ok. *shrug* Oh well.

Is anyone that is crashing trying to run Team Speak at the same time?

Before the update I could use Team Speak all the time and run the game no problems. Ever since the update I cannot run Team Speak and SL at the same time. I had crashed numerous times yesterday. 20 minutes here 30 minutes there so on and so fourth then lock up and have to hard boot the computer. Then I decided to not turn team speak on. I was able to stay online for like 4 hours straight no crashes.
