Crashing related to shadows in preferences?
04-14-2005 18:33
I used to crash also, but stopped once I turned off *shadows* in my preferences. Maybe turning down the settings will help? It did for me, anyway. Good Luck! Don't give up! :-D

Same here. Cannot stay connected more than a few minutes. Relogging fails consistantly on first attempt, usually successful on the second.

And no, Lee -- no firewall or antivirus running. :)

I just downloaded the optional update to the update, and SL crashed for the first time on me ever, WHAM BAM gone, hello crash logger.

When rebooting Windows XP Pro crashed also, haven't seen the blue screen of death since Windows 95.....:o( ...or got that uncomfortable feeling of a significant rise in stomach acid that can oly be intrepreted as a precurser to a very late night straightening out my OS.

Very sad puppy.

I too, lock up after just a few minutes. Specs are high-end, system is less than 3 months old.

After the optional update, I logged in. I stood for a couple minutes, turning around and waiting for textures to fully load, then went into appearance to make sure my skin loaded properly... and crashed. It's almost like the appearance mode triggered it for me. Same trouble logging back in as others are reporting, taking more than one try. When I did get back in, I crashed right away.

Opening IM windows, prim/object editing windows, inventory windows, pretty much any HUD item causes it for me. I have found the only way I can stay on is if I do nothing but chat.

BAH!

I've been crashing constantly too.... turned shadows off (figured that out after about a week, no thanks to LL customer support), and the freezing stopped, but the crashing out to desktop continues. Also, work I do on my avatars isn't saving properly... likely due to packet loss I suppose. Several times today I crashed and came back to see I'd lost 30-45 min worth of work. I decided to start relogging occassionally in hopes it'd save my work, but even relogging resulted in loss of work. From where I'm standing, after the hell day I had today trying to build with all the crashing and bugs, this is the most unstable piece of poo I've ever been in. As far as I'm concerned, it'd suit me fine if they pulled the plug on the entire thing until they get it all fixed. Then maybe I'll have a little hair left on my head in the end.

Regardless of the fact their 'minimum requirements' says nvidia gforce2 or higher, apparently a gforce 4 just isnt good enough. to turn off the shadow settings is telling me that they broke a setting that worked before as my geforce 4 worked with these settings before. I play games far more graphically intensive than this game with my g4 with out a fragment of problem.

my computer worked just fine with 1.5, 1.4, 1.3 never had crashes like this crap. come on get a clue.

I also have the freezing problem. Tried it on two separate machines at work, both freeze under circumstances usually related to logging in, tp:ing or travelling fast. The only things I have found that seem to help is lowering view-distance to 64 and decreasing the network speed slider a bit. I still freeze every now and then, but those settings help a lot (apart from me feeling blind when flying around). Interestingly, tp:ing home usually *helps*! If I tp to a new location and freeze there, often the only way to get back to play is to tp home the first thing, or I will freeze again in seconds after relog.

The main factor in common between my two office-computers are that they both have nVidia cards (ti4200 and 6800). Other than that they are very different (one is an AthlonXP 2200, the other P4 3.4GHz). Both are fully updated with recent drivers. No local firewall or anti-virus.

I also have an AMD-machine at home with a Radeon 9800-card. That has none of the freezing-problems (though all the other bugs in SL show up there too *grin*).

But I mainly suspect a network-related problem. Usually the freezes occur when the client needs to pull down a lot of new data (after arriving at a new location). That might be why tp:ing home isn't a problem, that stuff is usually in the disk-cache. Reducing view-distance also decreases the amount of data that has to be pulled down.

I'm getting quite frequent crashes and freezes just flying around
the world lately. Anyone else?

My rig is pretty generic. Dell Pentium with 1.25GB RAM.

I too, regularly, get the freezing problem, usually when I tp to a sim hat has alot of prims and scripts being used, and sometimes people. I suffer major lag, even when my network speed is made higher, I usually sit on 100 but put it up to 500-600 in high rez zones. I have now discovered there are about 7 or 8 sims I just can't go, not matter how I change the settings in preferences. This is really frustrating, because a few of the sims are where my friends have shops, and sadly, Numbakulla, to which a friend tped me to play, and from which I promptly crashed 4 times before giving up and tping out on login.
I recently upgraded my vid card to a GF ??? 256mg, whatever, from a 64mg (pitiful that was, hehe), so my only option now is to upgrade th MB and chip, and hopefully that will help. If this constant freezing and crashing is not a hardware problem, I am at a loss and saddened that all SLers cannot experience Second Life in all it's finest glory.

How much RAM do you have? (Not video card RAM - normal RAM). Which CPU do you have?

What speed is your internet connection?

When SL crashes what happens? What messages do you get?

Ditto to all of the above - so as a last gasp attempt to get it working I removed my Nvidia card and went back to my old ATI 9200 and guess what?

Yep

SL works just fine.

Try this! Worked for me!
05-10-2005 07:19
I tried every test , tweak, reload, tool, boost- to no avail. Then someone (forgive me for forgetting) Said try activating your advance graphics and cut your draw distance all the way down , both in your preferences. I had every other setting cut down to a minimum already. I did those 2 things, relogged, and have suffered less than 1 crash per day (and I'm a heavy user!). Things are back to the 'no worry' state I have experienced for my 2+ yrs! Give it a shot and Good luck to all!

Here is my solution, but you may not like it... so take it or leave it!

1Mb RAM + ATI 9k series graphics card.

With those loaded, the SL client preferences have become exactly that... preferences not "fixes" (er, ok, except for shadows).

The ONLY thing that ever crashes me out of SL is the quicktime movie client when I hit pause when receiving an rtsp stream (bug! bug!).

[ Just a note on RAM... it is a highly under-valued resource as it can have *far more impact* on your PC performance than just a faster processor. ]

Well thats all very nice and twee but...............

I already have 1MB of RAM and DID have a GeForce 5700LE too.I tried every variation possible after that last update and NOTHING worked - my whole system was locking up.

So I put my old ATI 9200 in and hooray! its all fine.I can have everything turned on, apart from shadows of course and things are back to normal.I was talking to a m8 today too who had to do almost the exact same thing.

Now I know there are problems with the last two versions of Nvidia's driver but even rolling back to last november didnt help me one bit, and this WAS just an SL problem because everything else ran just fine.

I have 256 mg RAM and am on a cable connection. My CPU is a 950.
It becomes impossible to move, SL freezes, and crashes, and the worst to happen is my pc just shuts down, so the only msg I get, if my pc doesn't shut down, is the prompt for crash report. So I stick to virtually lag free sims, which there are a few out there, to avoid the annoyance.

I agree with all the above:
/142/33/45214/1.html#post486465

I eventually got into Numbakulla (very nice work btw:-) by turning off lighting and shadows.
