The current bunch of family names are getting seriously saturated. Time to clear them out and put some more up ...

Chose my name through pure laziness. 1st name is my RL middle name and ill be able to remember it and Ra was the least number of letters to save me making so many keystrokes/typos....if theyd had 'D' id have used that instead :P

They used to rotate names often, but stopped doing so a couple of months ago. I read somewhere that LL may eventually let people choose their surnames, so they no longer bother rotating names...any update anyone?

I tried to pick the shortest names I could for when swapping alts, I also wanted to try and get the same last name, but no luck in 5 alts over a 6 month period

They used to retire a last name once 50 people had used it. Apparently they don't do that anymore though.

This was a suggestion made, but as far as I know never seriously followed up by LL. They were going to have the usual named, continue with rotation, but allow premium account members to purchase a name. I'm iffy on the details as far as if it was a one time purchase or a monthly upkeep added to your usual fee, as I've read both in different places. I don't care if they do or don't, I actually like my new avatar's name a lot, though if I was still in my old I probably might have considered it.

-.- I kinda miss my old account if only for the fact that there were only 50 of us total, give or take for the ones that were deleted/inactive.

Yes, rare last names are more valuable. It's a good reason to like that old account. LL intends to build in a uniqueness to the last names. They demonstrate this intent by retiring last names forever. If you can get that old account back, you should. In a way, its irreplaceable.... sort of like a ".com" domain name.

Other last names in this thread
Xeno 7,290
Childs 412
Rimbaud 945
Sands 26,172
Caldwell 1,220
Dielli 830
Susenko 321
Kline 4,350

Not really feasible. It's still within the amount of time that I could, but there were reasons for getting rid of it. Ahh well... I have a cool name at least :p

I'd like to see some older last names rotated back in as well. I wouldn't mind being able to grab Majestic again.

Oh, and I'd like the name Silverwing added, I have a first name I'm DYING to put to that.

Well, see, that's the point.
The following information on Linden policy is taken from Second Life Last Names FAQ.
From: Second Life Last Names FAQ

When are last names retired?
Kind of like Beanie Babies and other special rare collectibles, a last name is retired—which means it's cycled out of active usage and no new Residents can choose it—after a certain number of usages.
Can I unretire a last name? I really like one but it's long-gone!
Sorry, no. Generally speaking, once retired, a last name can't be revived.
Also from the FAQ
From: Second Life Last Names FAQ

When are last names created?
There isn't a set schedule to them. As soon as old names are retired and the list of choices gets shorter, we replenish and add them in batches. Traditionally, we've done themes, like hockey players, economists, food, and rock stars, but sometimes we'll add new ones without a theme too. Last names aren't announced ahead of time.
I'm working on a website that will alert registered users by e-mail when the names are finally rotated, or when a specific name becomes available. Users receiving these alerts will have an advantage, allowing them to create an alt with a desirable name before it is taken by someone else. The website is up now, but I will post the URL only when its ready for official launch. Stay tuned.

Well, I hope for the sake of your website, they actually start retiring last names again. The 40,000 to 50,000 Avs with the same last name don't bode well... :\

Changes to Registration Page
06-05-2007 19:12
LL has changed the "Join Now" page
Before you choose a name, it asks you if you want to join one of the following:
AzureIslands
MainlandBrasil
The L Word
Big Pond
nmc campus
Anshe Chung Mainland

It chooses one at random to highlight with a larger banner.

Everyone who clicks "Join Now" sees this preliminary screen, now.

When I joined, I scrolled the list until a last name inspired me - (tin roof...rusted!).

Oh yeah, and a short name was important too..learned that from many mmorpgs.

Wonder how many Schack's there are?
