jesus is actually a pretty common name... there is a policy about offensive names for Av's, and they can be AR'd, but as many have noted, what sounds bad in one language may have a who different meaning in another... heck Osama is considered a fairy tale in some places (or an invented persona created by the US gov) not that I own a tin foil cap, but maybe he is.... ::shrug::

Many centuries ago there was a Western TV series called "Rawhide". A young Clint Eastwood starred. One of the characters was called Jesus [with an acute accent on the "e"], but he appeared in the credits as Hey Soos. That is the way it's pronounced in Spanish-speaking countries, where it is often a given name. However, I suspect the spelling was less about pronunciation and more about not offending viewers.

In Spain it's the equivalent of our "Bless you" when someone sneezes.

Supposedly, my RL 1st Name, also my SL First Name, means "Death" in German.

LOL! The expression on my parents face when I told them this was Priceless!!!! :D

It also doomed me to never finding cheap personalized junk in stores. Not unless I wanna scrape off an extra "D".

I was at school with a girl called Marie Louise (despite the name she was English). She was always known as Marlou. That means "pimp" in French LOL.

I am surprisingly asked 'How do you pronounce your name AWM?'... I've even been asked how I spell it  , needless to say, none of which are on my friends list.

This reminds me of something funny.

I was in quite busy club and wanted to trigger some gesture but instead I hit one of the purr gestures which is in German ("*schnurr* which means *purr*). Suddenly an agitated IM pops up: "Why did you say that????" I explained. At the end it turned out that "Schnurr" was this person's RL last name and he never knew about its meaning. He was shocked to see his RL last name pop up in a public chat. :)

There are 18 with the name Jism.

Which was a disappointing movie, IMHO. John Abraham didn't have his shirt of yearly enough.

EDIT: Ah! I see Madhu got to this one before I did. Foreign words don't always come across "nicely" as some find when they order Thai pumpkin curry.

I don't know why people do not know how to pronounce Bill, Bill. It is A. William Mars, right?

... ah yes, how many giggles were generated by the name of the local Thai joint, Phuket Thai.

Good to see others thinking of inter-lingual meanings of that little word, jism. /me is not a John Abhraham fan - take a bath boy!

Oh, it does! And when I first read your name, I also thought "how weird"-but I suppose you pronounce it with a short o?
German would be a long o.

@Monalisa: I bet that person was *really* scared! ;) What a weird coincidence....miau!

@Bodhi: Lacking a Thai restaurant where I could ask, what IS so...nasty about the pumpkin curry?

Beyond The Pale

From: Conifer Dada
the sort of names that might be considered beyond the pale.

Hitler / Adolfhitler - 54
Stalin - 100+
Mao - 100+
Osamabinladen - 17
Polpot - 14
KKK - 61
Murderer - 21
Rapist - 16

It might be interesting to see what others come up with.

Hiya Conifer,

Nothing to do with the actual question in the post...lol...
But I was just wondering where you came up with the expression ''beyond the pale'...

I'd always thought of it as particularily relevant to Dublin, when the city was enclosed by walls..long long long time ago...

Well I'm not Conifer but I know the answer to this I think. It was derived from the cordon or pale around, as you said, Dublin in medieval times. The Normans lived within this area and looked down on the barbarians beyond it. OK, don't shoot me, that's the Norman take on it. I'm half Irish LOL

Ida get it,
but there are a few nicknames w/ the 1st name, Tampon.

If this is a universal well known name like John etc, I have no refs! :p

LOL! My Alt's name is a japanese slang term for Female Genitalia. :D

Which I also say loudly at work, along with "Bukake", as the stupid hicks barely know English, let alone another language, so they just think I'm saying Jibberish. :D

Isnt that the Tampa Bay Football team, the Tampons? I heard they got a new 1st String. Weird thing is, they only play once a month for 7 days. :D

I can't believe nobody snatched up my name before I did. I just can't believe it.
I think this name can be offensive to people because when I started Sl and went around exploring I almost always got an IM window that somebody says 'what do you want why are you spying on me?' or someone will just ban me from their land thinking I have a personal vendetta on them.

All I have been doing is exploring and meeting people but most of those people just think I am a spy or someone to get revenge. I wonder what makes them think that.

Is that like that obnoxious Swiss "musician" called DJ Bobo? I heard his name also means "female genitalia". :D
