The Lindens really need to learn to be careful what they promise. While 1.7's list of new features and fixes is impressive, the two big things that were promised as main features are noteably absent. Neither Havok 2 nor HTML will be in 1.7. Sad, sad, sad.

Andrew recently said they're in the process of revamping their development and deployment structure so that new features will be released on an as-finished basis, rather than having to wait to get lumped into a major release. Hoepfully that will speed things up. I'm not sure why I believe that after so many broken promises, but I do.

I'll be taking bets if we get Havok 2 before the winter solstice.

I think the development cycle works out at about 3/4 months but dont quote me on that if so then i figure 1.8 will be going to preview around nov/dec, 1.9 mar/apr and 2.0 with there already forecast summer 2006 ?

But anybodys guess is whats going to be in them lol

I hear Havok 2 will be the singularity, given all the expectations..

2012.

But honestly, i'm beginning to think havok2 is some sort of inside joke. i hadn't seen any serious response from the lindens to date about it.

Havok 2 won't make it, but I thought a limited version of HTML would..? Remember, the last time I heard Andrew talking about it, he still didn't dismiss HTML...

As a non-physics-scripter, I will certainly miss HTML more :( ... although, of course, I'm also curious as to the improvements using Havok 2.

Although I may imagine that Havok 2 will be implemented in SL when Havok 4 comes out... hehe... in a year or two :)

Nope html wont make 1.7 from what i heard, i very much doubt that it will be included in a patch version 1.7.1 etc, but you never know, since all the libraries got pulled i think its a definate delay on that too.

Does it seem like they pulled all the stuff we really needed to get in the stuff we thought might be neato to have?

Probably. I don't expect anything to happen in regards to any of these features before 2.0. By then, things will probably won't be pretty.

You think you are waiting around now for Havok 2, just see how long you'll have to wait for the current version of Havok, Havok 3!

I expect Havok2 to come out in early to mid 2006, but it will be "under the hood" fixes and not the "great vehicle" physics engine we hope. We prolly wont see that till the 2007 time frame. I bet then most of their efforts will go to the new rendering engine (hell they could even wait and release them both at once, in late 07-early 08. After that the process will begin again of rebuilding SL for yet another new rendering engine and Havok 3.

Unless LL is rebuilding SL for easier upgrades in Havok and rendering engines (think about it as installing a new engine in a 55' Chevy (Easy) over a modern day Mercedes (Hard))

So these newer improvements can be released sooner, cheaper, and easier.

I don't doubt Havok2 could be put in SL with 1.7 but the fact that SL can barely handle Havok1 its going to be a long time before it is implemented. SL has to keep an eye on the fact the vast majority of thier customers are running on older, weaker machines. Havok2 probably represnts increasing the minimum requirements to perhaps a 1.8 opposed to a 800. This could remove 30-40% of their user base in one fell swoop. Not a good idea. Until that number drops to like 10% or less will SL even consider moving to Havok2.

We won't get Havok 2 because it won't be a suppported environment by the time it makes it into SL ;).
