You can't be serious.

Don't you know by now it doesn't matter what they do or what day the grid is taken down, things are and will always remain the same in sl.

Back then people complained because every week they would add somethig that made sl worse then it already was. No one wanted anymore of that and hence, all the many complaints which Linden saw and finally they stopped doing it.

They can shut the grid one a week or once a month, nothing will change.

A sencible topic ( finally ). HEY HEY BRING IT BACK AND STOP THE MADNESS!

Well it can`t get any worse then what we have now. I don`t like living inthe 2004 era of sl with all this badly done codes and server breakdowns.

Oh, yes it can and it was back then. Some of you weren't here back then so you think it would be better but it's not and it won't.

I dont believe it would do a darn bit of good.

As I remember things we had weekly downtimes AND the kind of crap that happened tonight. Thing is though back then stuff like tonight was likely to take the grid down for 8+ hours.

Thank You

Forgive them for they know not what they say.

They can never shut the drid down till it crashes perhaps? Never fix bugs either perhaps?
Of course we are serious, complaints were due to changes to the grid not maintenance, and if regular maintenance is bad, why do Blizzard, NC, Sony and most other MMO's do it weekly?
Wednesdays a good day, the people not happy with that, bad luck because Friday to Monday doesn't suit the rest of the world who have RL jobs during the week.

Well it has become worse. But atleast with weekly maintence we can get alittle straight around here. 3 years and i have never seen such problems occuring. When you thpught it can`t get any worse! It instantly does! Those that are new don`t rember we had to fly from telehubs to our point of landing. P2P didnt exist.

edit: sorry, bilbo, for any confusion. i'm egon's alt.
Hiya Takahiro/Egon! <wave> Thanks for the card :)

just to quench the rumour, no, not an LL employee. Just lucky I logged in when they'd left the gate open ajar. Spent a couple of hours at the hangout, tp-ed in a friend who brought his girl, had my tango fix with one of the two prettiest girls there :)

One of my other RL friends got in too. Sadly not Morgaine when she got home and I gave up at 1.00am GMT when I went bald ;)

LL have been trying to stick to release on Wednesdays, but the notice we get hasn't been very good lately, even for planned outages :(

Does anyone have a specific list of regular maintenance tasks that are no longer being performed, or is this all merely wild uninformed speculation? The story from LL is that the those regular tasks simply no longer require the grid to be taken offline. If the same work is indeed being performed, how would artificially imposed downtime improve things?

Boy, am I glad to be back in the madness :D
Hello everyone :) /me waves

I wasn't here when the weekly maintenance was originally around, but I like the idea of it. I very rarely check the blog so I have to rely on the forums to tell me when the restarts are going to be or when there are problems with SL. And if I am at home then I can't even check the forums. If there was a set day for any maintenance it would be a lot easier. I could just think 'oh, its wednesday, thats why it isn't working.'

Back when I first started on SL there was regular weekly maintenance on Wednesday mornings SLT. The Europeans rightly complained because it was always right in the middle of their Wednesday evening. Everyone else just complained in general because that's what Second Lifers do.

It seems to me, though, that during that time you at least knew when the grid was going to go down. You knew it would be down completely Wednesday morning and that Wednesday afternoon would be a bit wanky as it got itself back together. Now we never know what is going to happen. I say bring back the old days. I don't care what day or time. Make it convenient for everyone, if possible, but it's obvious that SL cannot go a week without regular maintenance so let's schedule it.

Anyone with me on this?

Umm how bout no. I used to have wednesdays off work and could never get things done I needed to do in SL. I actually changed my day off so that I could get things done for my SL business. I am VERY glad they have done away with the weekly 'maintenance' as it was not fair that people like me had to pay the same amount for our accts as others who pay and could not utilize the service as others could because of guaranteed weekly wednesday downtime. I'm not opposed to 'maintenance' or whatever they do but it does not need to be weekly and not on the same day. Mix it up a bit so that one group only is not effected.

Weekly 'maintenance' didn't really do much for SL anyways and I'm sure that was realized and thus changed. Why don't you go and search for old threads where this has been discussed and ran into the ground before instead of starting yet another discussion?

As you said here... "The Europeans rightly complained because it was always right in the middle of their Wednesday evening. Everyone else just complained in general because that's what Second Lifers do." Why is it ok for one set of people to be inconvenienced and called a bunch of complainers, yet it was 'rightly' ok for others to complain? You sound quite biased to me. Even though a weekly wednesday update wouldn't inconvenience me at this time, I would still feel bad for others.

BTW, If you don't feel like utilizing SL on wednesdays, feel free to not log on that day.

And you seriously believe weekly shutdowns will make a difference? Don't kid yourself. It used to be like this and if it was better back then they never would of changed it. Nor would so many residents written in so many complaints because of the way it was back then.

And complaints were filed on both changes in the game and maintenance. Yeah, maintenance. You wouldn't think so but in doing their maintenance they also did things that caused problems.

Yes, there seems to be a lot of problems in the last few months, more so then before. You would have to believe part of this is due to the new content that's being added. Maybe if they would first repair all the broken stuff then add new material it wouldn't be as bad. But that's not the way they do it here.

Don't know but you probably wasn't even in sl back then so there's no way you would know how bad or good it was in comparison to both times.

I voted for pie.

I still don't understand why software needs periodic maintenance. No moving parts, no reservoirs to rund dry, no heating elements to burn out, no corrosion to fight, no vibration...

Upgrades, sure. Reinstall corrupted files, of course. Routine maintenance? Why????

As Sindy says on the previous page, they did a ton of work so that they almost never have to take down the grid to do maintenance.. Most hardware things can be replaced on the fly with the only downside being that things are slower for a bit or some sims go offline for a bit. Software is even easier..

The only reason I can see to go back to the weekly/bi-monthly shutdown is to just to give all the machines a reboot and clear up leaked memory/resources. Then again, a rolling restart does that..

twice a month downime resulted in a more stable game . But look now? We dont have it and look at the present condition? Lots of work? well frankly speaking we need a better down time time table. The currect one just doesnt seem to be working. If you want to live inthe past and believe things are better now then a few years ago fine dream dream. But that not enough anymore.
