Back when I first started on SL there was regular weekly maintenance on Wednesday mornings SLT. The Europeans rightly complained because it was always right in the middle of their Wednesday evening. Everyone else just complained in general because that's what Second Lifers do.

It seems to me, though, that during that time you at least knew when the grid was going to go down. You knew it would be down completely Wednesday morning and that Wednesday afternoon would be a bit wanky as it got itself back together. Now we never know what is going to happen. I say bring back the old days. I don't care what day or time. Make it convenient for everyone, if possible, but it's obvious that SL cannot go a week without regular maintenance so let's schedule it.

Anyone with me on this?

The grid goes down/has problems when something unexpected happens. If LL said that doing weekly maint would decrease the chances of unexpected things happeing, I'd vote for this. I don't think they'd say that, though.

Bilbo is an employee??
I´m still getting grid closed except for employees message and was looking forward to a friend playing a gig in Taff´s in 10 mins :(

The regular maintenance was just something you were used to I suppose, this was an unexpected problem, so not sure weekly maintenance would have made a difference.

I was wondering the same thing. Either that or scary to think of Bilbo all alone with all those Lindens running loose.

The unexpected is going to occur with any system, but it seems to me that there were less problems as a result and definitely not as many weekend problems as has been stated.

That´s a fair point about the weekends. Still not sure that regular maintenance would resolve that. Aren´t they more related to much greater resident numbers? I remember expecting problems if 20,000 people were around at the same time, these days, and especially at the weekends, it seems 50,000 is normal.
(Just my rambling thoughts btw :o ).

LL spent considerable time and effort removing the need for taking the grid down. Now most things can be done 'on the fly' with only a rolling restart at most. There's no need for weekly maintenance, and I find it kind of amusing to find some actually want it as badly as everyone hated it.

Since it was by far the funniest option, I went for "call it a day". Imagine what all those ever complaining Second Lifers would have to do with their lives :-) Would international suicide rates go up? Or would we all find another platform to whine on...

Just because we Europeans have to pay VAT, I would say do weekly maintenance during european nights. In the USA you have 1 evening less to create good stuff, so we can win back our 19%...

Seriously? I could care less when they do maintenance, as long as we know it is coming. One should compare the number of monthly outages with the weekly scheduled outages. I really would not know which one comes out better that way. But planned outage is always better then being kicked out :-)

Greetings, Marcel

I'd be surprised if you ever looked back and found a post that I complained about them. As for others I say be careful what you ask for. I don't consider rolling restarts a better option. I find them annoying and they seem to take longer to get back in order IMO.

I say go for it. If it helps keep the grid issues down doing the weekly maintenance. Weekly rolling restarts are just as annoying as a weekly maintenance was.

I'll gladly take the 'scheduled' downtime over the multiple 'unscheduled' downtimes/restarts/logins disabled/asset server defunked/whatevertheycallems.

I voted yes only because to me the whole thing seemed a little more stable than it does now, back when we had weekly maintenance. Maybe I'm just imagining things. ;)

I voted yes, but really, I would like to know exactly what they are doing during those 5-15 hours. If they just do rolling restarts of all of the sims, well maybe we don't need it. After careful consideration, I wouldn't mind them doing planned maintenance once a month if it will improve stability.

Even the most stable platforms need maintenance. It will never be gone for good.

I dont believe it would do a darn bit of good.

As I remember things we had weekly downtimes AND the kind of crap that happened tonight. Thing is though back then stuff like tonight was likely to take the grid down for 8+ hours.

Actually I have be rather enjoying how much more smoothly things seem to be running these days (speedbumps the size of elephants not the rockies)

Before the het grid stuff (http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/06/25/dia-de-la-liberacion-and-het-grid/) or at least as I understand it, they couldn't have different versions of sim & client software running on the grid at the same time. Any time they changed the way the viewers & sims talked to each other, they had to shut the whole thing down, force everybody to upgrade and restart. They don't do the every-other-wednesday stuff any more because they fixed all that so they can do live (or rolling restart) upgrades now.

Remember that SL is made up of _thousands_ of servers. Thousands and thousands. It takes a while to install patches on that many machines.

edit: also http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/03/04/malleable-messages/ and the other blog entries that it points to...

Well it can`t get any worse then what we have now. I don`t like living inthe 2004 era of sl with all this badly done codes and server breakdowns.

Weekly maintenance is a good thing. BTW, what is the difference between SLT and PST? My viewer always displays PST.
