It's much more fluent and natural to be able to move myself and my camera around without having to take a hand off my mouse. WASD also makes it easier for people who come from other games to get used to the different controls. It made alt scrolling around objects I was building a piece of cake. My hands aren't big enough to even hold alt+ arrow/page up-down keys. The only people that probably wouldn't mind this change is people who use a left-handed mouse setup.
I personally don't feel a change like this should have been implemented before an option allowing full keyboard layout customization was put in!
Imagine going out to your garage and finding the steering wheel on the passenger side of your car. This isn't a game breaking mechanic, but it's as annoying as all hell.

ummmm...... wtf? They are deprecating the WASDF keys? Really?
Did, ummm, anybody that was part of the decision-making for this item ever think to check how many thousands of people rely on those in the in-world combat systems alone, let alone the fact that people are quite used to them in general?
What possible benefit is there to doing this? Are they going to make those keys available for another purpose or something? Or is this just a random PFA (Pulled From Ass) decision? Really would like to know :/

the release notes say Alt-ASDWE no longer operate the camera. The title of this thread is misleading.

From: Adz Childs the release notes say Alt-ASDWE no longer operate the camera. The title of this thread is misleading. Oops, my apologies, I fixed it. However, I would assume, that just like myself, people who regularly use WASD also used ALT+WASD for camera rotating. This change really sucks.

I just went and found the source to see for myself, and see that I had misunderstood. It would appear that Adz is correct. So.... While that is inconvenient, it is not quite as disastrous as I had originally thought. My previous post will be deleted now

i know to most people it was no big deal. most i talk to say "you could use wasd keys for camera? i always used mouse!" but i used wasd exclusively, and this has rendered sl almost unplayable to me. i've already made some really strange changes to options i didn't mean to with alt+w trying to move my camera. gah ;.;
after my final exam tomorrow i'll code up a keyboard hook to make alt+WASD act like alt+arrows. will post here :3

What's also annoying as hell and was pointless is opening a window.. any window stops you from using the arrow keys to move untill you click away from a window... another stupid frickin change that makes no sense. Nothing should keep you from just typing and hiting enter to talk without bouncing around and nothing should stop you from walking and turning ever but they broke the first twice and apparently don't learn these things to well.

I loved using one hand to quickly and easily move and manipulate the camera. Now I'm just banging on the keyboard hoping that the Lindens will give us back the option of ALT + WASD soon.

i am surprised there isn't a keymapping feature. like in FPS games
i have a cool Nostromomini-keyboard (USB) that has about 20 keys on it... plus a scroll wheel and a control pad. You can map it to whatever you want. You can make different mappings for different games, and swap out the profiles you've made. Its designed for FPS's but I've always intended to set it up for this game.
Oh thats right... i'm left handed. Curse the world.

I'm cursing like never before at this change. Used to be a slight adjustment to camera tilt with Alt-E or Alt-C was simple, now it's down to Ctrl-Alt & mouse (as I tend to keep my right hand on the mouse when not typing) or I'd have to go hunt for Page Up/Page Down. So long one-handed mouse operation, say hello to another talking curse-word dictionary.

This is by far the worst thing that has ever been done.
I am absolutely livid that some idiot has taken it upon themselves to dictate how i should use my damn keyboard.
Make this fool sit down and build a 200 prim object with this insane camera key combination.

LoL
I must add that I did a very poor job at expressing the 'rage' I felt over this change compared to Nubee and Nand. I agree whole heartedly with their feelings.

I think they're trying to move to a more standardized (for Windows users) interface, to make SL act more like the operating system that the majority of its users are used to. Probably to help it feel less alien to new users, at the expense of the oldbies who've formed second-nature habits around the old behaviours. Honestly, I didn't know you could use Alt+WASD to move the camera, I never really messed with it. I've always used WASDECF for movement, with a constant hand on my house, and fingers ready on Ctrl+Alt to whip the camera around at a moment's notice. I also use mouselook frequently

I was a regular user of Alt+WASDEC myself and find myself constantly opening windows/changing options out of habit now. In the previous version and versions before, moving the camera around was easy and quick. Now, it's painstaking. While perhaps allowing at to control the dropdown menus is a bit more inline with Windows, I would still appreciate an option to turn that feature off and set it back like it used to be.

Even if just a simple debug option was put in to revert this part of the UI changes to it's former ability would be great.
I am a long-time user of the WASD keys and I find it painful to have to switch to the Arrow keys to do camera movement. It's awful.
Please change it back or give us an option!

Ive used Alt+WASDEFC since my first day on SL and today I dunno how many settings I've changed trying to use the camera because alt activated the top menu! T_T This put a builder such as myself and many others out there to a painful halt and making it difficult to build a 5 prim stool now x_x.
Not exactly sure what the intent was to dictate how we all use our keyboards .. at least make it to where we can revert to the way it was before this fix puh-leeeease.
Also not sure if anyone else noticed this or pointed it out, but you can also no longer hit the Enter/Return key to turn Chat off. Not as bad a hindrence, but still rather irksome x.x Anyways, back to painfully building for me .. and its no 5 prim stool either .. its a mega market... *sobs*

For the person who suggested it's a possible change to make the game less alien to windows users, I really can't see that. As a gamer, WASD are usable in virtually every FPS game and customizable into just about any other game that uses any 3D movement. Using both hands without having to shift position much is more natural and makes more sense. This was a terrible change.

I agree, this has completely ruined my SL experience. Yet another BAD idea on the Linden's part. We should have the option of going back to the Alt -WADS camera control.

Every few minutes in SL, I try to use ALT+WASDEC to move the camera. Maybe once or twice every few hours, I have reason to use the dropdown menus.
I can't figure out how it's more convenient to have ALT+E drop down the Edit menu instead of moving the camera up. I wonder how many SL users think to themselves, "Gee! I open the Edit menu so much more often than I pan the camera..."

It's a GAME not an APP. Changing it to be more "windows" like is just STUPID...WASD has become the standard for anything FPS-ish (which SL definitely is) and the one-handed camera adjustment was simply WONDERFUL.
I'm completely lost now...I can't even walk, then chat, then walk, without somehting disastrous happening to my AV. Put it back. This changes has affacted me so badly the thing is not worth playing. No, I'm not overdramatising.

Cool. Thanks Amanda for the link to the feature voting. I just put in my 10 votes on it. Now I feel a *little* better. ----------------------------------------------Now, I hate billboards as much as everyone, but I just made one - just for this cause. Freely copiable. If you want it, get it here. Its just an ugly board telling ppl to vote on proposal 2517. It rotates slowly and when you click on it, it'll open the voting page in your browser. If you don't want it to rotate, then just edit the script inside. simple. Hey, ppl won't vote if they don't know about it...

I'm just going to add my two cents and say that I'm extremely pissed that I can't use alt+E or C to pan my camera around my avatar, which was extremely useful for building. Given that I like to use WASD for comfortable movement, since using the arrow keys requires that I either scoot over my keyboard or scrunch my wrist to the side, I don't like using Pageup and Pagedown, which are all the way over on the opposite side of the keyboard. This makes it a frequent annoyance.
I'm very, very disappointed in this change, which has ruined much of my gametime -- I keep trying to pan around with E and C and it brings up menus accidentally, and etc. I hope it's quickly rectified. A game should make movement easy on the player, not make it more of a hassle to the point of causing a large outcry.

I found that the mouse works, but it's still terrible compared to how simple it was before. I'm actually more upset about it now than I was originally. Everytime I accidentally rotate one of my buildings I get even more frustrated.
