Anyone seeing a dramatic increase in packet loss following installation of Second Life 1.12.3 (4) ?

Anyone seeing a dramatic increase in packet loss following installation of Second Life 1.12.3 (4) ? Yes, but wasn't going to mention it first, 'cause standard response is inevitably "it's on your end". Nevermind that I've written several "reliability over UDP" libraries in my time and know with absolute certainly that it's not always *just* "on your end". |

Yes. Just downloaded the update and logged in, to discover extremely high packet loss whenever I did anything - including clicking on anything.
I decided to check here to see if I were the only one. If it is all on our ends, then I guess they have somehow figured out a way to get rid of a lot of residents. coco _____________________

Not getting PL, I'm getting excellent pings too - BUT, on my island, where I know EXACTLY what to expect, my personal fps is about 50% of what it should be, which isn't on.
Ah well - another 'update' - another performance decrement. At least LL are consistent. |

I'm getting 40% packet loss or worse on my Mac with OS X 10.3.9, and my FPS is only half to 2/3 of what it was just before thus update.
Unlike some Mac users, it didn't crash for me. I tried to TP to a couple different sims, and did the TP OK, but had prim attachments vanish for 30 sec or so, shortly after TP arrival. Most of the textures that I could see were solid grey. _____________________
Sorry, LL won't let me tell you where I sell my textures and where I offer my services as a sim builder. Ask me in-world.

I'm getting over 12 percent at times, opening the map, opening preferences, opening inventory. The display at the top right solid red, while the bandwidth is small. like 150 kbps. During a download of a non-SL earlier today I got over 500 kbps download speed. My connection is a 3,000 kbps (i.e, 3 mbps).

I can go in game for about a minute and as soon as I try to build anything (or maybe its my inventory being open?) packet loss spikes and I soon find myself unable to move because the lag is so bad.

The question is: What is being done about it? This seems to be a universal problem since the update. There were supposed to be updates in the Blog, but there are none. Deafening silence from LL. Even further acknowledging the issue would be a start.

In a recent update they tried to fix packet loss by reducing the effective bandwidth utilization when packet loss was high. This worked, but when the problem went away it never went back up again - the only way to get your textures loading again was to jiggle the bandwidth slider, which seemed to reset the backoff. Now they've added code to push it back towards your selected bandwidth level when the packet loss goes away. They're probably being too optimistic.
This kind of balancing algorithm is hard, the one in TCP has been tuned and retuned for the past 15-20 years, and works pretty well. It would be better if SL would use TCP for bulk transfers and take advantage of the TCP backoff and retry algorithms, but I consider what they ARE doing (even if it causes a temporary increase in packet loss as they work on the balance) worthwhile. |

Packetloss and bandwidth levels are near unbearable on any sim with more than a couple of people on it (or anything with several textures to rezz.....like, well, pretty much everywhere). This was not the case pre-update. My PC isn't kick-ass, but it's not Fisher Price, either
![]() MI and grey body parts, clothing, etc mostly only seem to happen for me when I first log in or first TP somewhere and the rezz time of avatars seem directly related to how much in total (both structurally and avatar-texture/prim-hair use etc) there is on a given sim. It's a bummer but (a) Maybe it'll motivate me to clean my apartment and (b) if they messed something up and are seeing it in our "reports", maybe they'll be able to target the cause and *gasp* fix it |

A clear and distinct answer is now in the SL Answers forum regarding this, saying that they do realize it is a problem and are working on it. (I think that's what it says; it's late and I'm not looking at it at this moment.)
So that's hopeful. Mainly, though, I can't tell you, Suezanne, how quietly amused I was and continue to be at your question about how to delete and AR your unwanted avatar flea infestation. I mean . . . where else but in Second Life? hehe coco _____________________

Mine has been totally messed up since the update. Can hardly move, etc. Not even worth trying to play at this point. I was told I need to update my vid card drivers.. hasn't helped. Go figure. I've been able to tolerate all the "updates" until this one. **sighs**

OMG, I am SO happy I happened upon this thread cause I was banging my head on my computer thinking I was the only person having this issue!
I have to say I have noticed a tiny bit of improvment in my packet loss since the little update yesterday (weds.) But ever since the last big update I have been walking without stopping, flying into the ground, falling off of sims, and covered in "grey goo". I have a fast cpu, great video card - I even called my ISP and made them feel bad about it. LOL They pinged me and said my connection was fine, but I went out a got a new router anyway, thinking it might be too outdated. ![]() Anyway I do have a suggestion for you if you're covered in "Missing Image" though. I do this every time I log in so I look like me and not a big piece of white chalk. A guy I ran into helped me with this... To rebake your AVI textures: Go up to toolbar and click on "Client" Then click on "Character" Then click "rebake textures". After that, go into "Apperance" and then click out of it. Hopefully LL will get it together soon. |

Messaged live help today about the packet loss issue and the lag issue...... my answer was this (waited 15 minutes for it ) a big nothing ............
This is unacceptable... I come on here to have fun and relax.... Why shoudl I have to endure packet loss spiking up to 60% failed teleports and not getting answers to questions.........if the million user mark was so important to the lindens and Linden Labs why did they not gear their hardware for it .. This is seeming more and more like a shoe string operation....... why should I pay the amount I do each month to a company that only cares about corporate spoonsors now and the big land developers...... Btw it is not on my network connection I traced it and am not losing any packets .. it is on the LL side of the connection.. as I noiticed when over 8,000 users are online the packet loss spikes and so does the lag..... _____________________

Being as the norm now is around 13K players on line, and the norm a few months ago was about 6K, im thinking the current bandwidth they are using cant handle all that are on line. Sundays seem to be the worst, but as you watch how many are on line, this increases a lot on Sunday for whatever reason.
Have been watching the numbers on line as i log in, perhaps a bad move on LL's part to list that on the log in page, i see a direct correlation to lag and upload to the number of ppl on line. |
