I have finally found a solution to my out of memory issue, may work for others:
Under Hardware settings, in graphics options, lower the slider that shows how much memory your graphics card has. I am still not sure why it works, but it does. My card has 512 meg of memory, but i've slid the slider down to 256, and haven't had this issue since.

That makes it sound like SL is trying to reserve every bit of video RAM you tell it is available right off the bat. I'm gonna have to try that, although for the life of me I can't remember seeing that slider. Oh well. Hope it works. Thanks for the tip!

I'm getting the SmartHeap error with the latest RC. Fairly often. The frequency is new and not pleasing.

Just thought I'd throw it out there.... I was receiving the smartheap errors quite a bit recently and I came here to check out what could be wrong.... to little avail.
What I -did- end up doing is:
Preferences -> Graphics -> Hardware Options
My texture memory was at 1GB. I reduced that to 256mb and after a few days I haven't received one smartheap error yet. Why 256? I thought I would set it for the amount of memory on my video card. On my other laptop I found that reducing it to 32 made the problem go away.
Is this the actual solution and will it work for you? Don't know. It got rid of the errors I had though.

edit: This is with version 1.19.1.4, MS Vista SP1, 3GB DDR2, Nvidia 8600M

This seems to have fixed the total system freezes (within minutes) of my 3.06 Core 2 Duo iMac 24" with 512 VRAM and 4GB! It's *amazing* LL can screw up this machine with their little viewer. Heh heh. (SL viewer version 1.20) Thanks!
